Chapter Text
With the world slowly dying the government-The Elite, took charge & began controlling everyone. Things have changed from how you last remember it. Our society has changed some say for the better; for my friend and me… for worse. There’s order in our society now, compliance & care for everything around us, everything except each other. Love is the word desperately trying to escape everyone’s lips but out of fear, we stay quiet. There are only two types of people in our newborn society: the serial number soulmates and the real soulmates.
From birth, we are given a serial number, forever placed on our bodies. It’s supposed to keep us from ruining the new society; it makes us better… somehow compatible with those that match us. For some people, it’s on their forearm others, on the back of their neck, ears… sometimes people have it on the inside of their lips. This serial number is meant as an assignment for us. We live to serve The Elite and when we’re not serving them, we’re on the hunt for our matching serial number. If you defy your number & go against The Elite you are either punished or worse. I don’t know what the worst of it is. I’ve never been curious to find out.
The real soulmates are the tragic lovers. Destined to be together but can never be. Rumors have gone around saying that those that have real soulmates hear each other in their heads, they feel each other’s’ emotions and, are connected for life. Apparently, The Elite find these specific people very interesting. I’m not sure what happens to them…again, I’ve never been curious to find out.
I’ve never been happy with the rules in this new era, neither has my friend… but we can’t do much about it.
Can we?
