Chapter Text
Snow started falling from the grey puffy clouds in the sky. The snowflakes drifted down onto the cold footpath slowly and gracefully.
Yoongi envied the snow.
His breath puffed out like smoke as he sighed deeply. He wished he could be pure white like the snow, he wished he could fly as gracefully as the delicate snowflakes that fell into his palm that wasn't holding a grocery bag.
He loved the snow.
But hated it at the same time.
"It's snowing." A voice said behind him, a voice that Yoongi knew well. Behind him was a man much taller than him, his brown eyes wide and his full lips slightly parted at he stared up into the clouds.
"Yeah," Yoongi muttered as he adjusted his scarf around his neck and tried not to stare at his companion, who was carrying a couple of grocery bags himself.
"I actually really like the snow." The taller said as he started walking next to Yoongi on the grey footpath. "A lot of people don't because it's cold." He mused.
"Snow's nice." Yoongi mumbled back.
Seokjin looked at him with a slightly concerned look in his big eyes. "You always seem extra solemn when it's snowing. What's up?" He asked.
Yoongi just sighed again, hot breath smoking in front of him as they walked. "Memories." Was all he said and it was enough for Seokjin to not ask more. He respected Yoongi's privacy when it came to his past.
"Do you think Jimin can make it snow?" The brunette mused, changing the subject from Yoongi.
"His wings aren't big enough for weather manipulation." Yoongi answered as they turned a corner, nearing the BTS dorm.
"Oh," Seokjin said. "That makes sense. Weather is a strong power." The two walked in a comfortable silence the rest of the way back to where they lived with the other members of BTS.
When they arrived back at the dorms it was no longer quiet. Jimin and Jungkook were chasing a shirtless Taehyung who's large butterfly wings were fluttering as he ran. Hoseok was sitting with one arm slung over the back of the couch as he watched the three run around, phone in his other hand. Namjoon was nowhere to be seen, probably in his and Jungkook's room with his headphones on.
"You three!" Seokjin called once the door was closed behind them. Taehyung was first to stop dead in his tracks causing the other two to crash into him and all three tumbled to the floor. "What are you doing?" Seokjin asked the giggling heap on the floor.
"At least put a shirt on, that's quite indecent." Yoongi commented as he placed his and one of Seokjin's grocery bags on the kitchen bench and started to put them away.
"We're at home Yoongi," Taehyung practically groaned as the three untangled themselves and Jimin helped straighten out his wings. Taehyungs wings were quite large and all the colours of the sunset starting black at the base gradienting red to orange to a light yellow at the tips. Taehyung wasn't afraid to show his wings while at home, you couldn't blame him, his wings are beautiful.
"Yeah, grandpa Yoongi." Jimin put in.
Yoongi screwed up his face and herd Seokjin suppress a giggle as he helped put things away in the kitchen pantry. "I'm not that old." The black haired boy mumbled.
"You're just old fashioned and nap a lot." Seokjin chuckled.
"Old fashioned?" Yoongi mumbled more to himself than to Seokjin.
The elder chuckled. "I wouldn't worry about it." He said as they finished putting away the food.
"What's the plans for dinner?" Hoseok's voice made Yoongi look up. The younger was leaning on his elbows on the bench with his own wings now out. Hoseok's wings were classified small wings, they resembled bats wings and were a deep navy blue with very thin white vein like patterns on them. The group had a rule, if they had wings they can have them out at home and no one will judge or tell anyone about them.
"There's something I want to try." Seokjin answered, his eyes darted to the three youngest running around again. "Did you want to help?" He asked Hoseok.
A smile broke out on the winged one and his wings gave a flap in excitement. "I'd love to." This was when Yoongi decided to leave the kitchen but stopped for a moment before turning the corner.
"I saw that." Jimin was standing in the hall, a knowing look on his face and a hand on his hip. Yoongi figured if wings had a mocking stance he was looking at it.
"Saw what?" Yoongi feigned ignorance. He knew what Jimin was talking about.
"You. Looking at him." Jimin gestured to the kitchen with his head and eyebrows and almost as if to prove his point the tattle tail laughter rung out from the kitchen. Yoongi didn't grace Jimin with a response and merely glared at him to not mention anymore. "Can you help me brush my wings?" The younger changed the subject, knowing Yoongi's adversion to the topic.
"Why me?" Yoongi raised an eyebrow.
Jimin shrugged. "You seem to do the best job and it never hurts."
"Okay then." Yoongi sighed and followed the younger to his room. Jimin jumped onto the double bed in his, Taehyung's and Hoseok's room and took his special wing brush out of the bedside table. Yoongi took the brush from his outstretched hand and ran the soft bristles over his fingers while Jimin took off his shirt so Yoongi could see right where his wings connected to his back between his shoulder blades.
Jimin sighed contently as Yoongi gently started to thread his fingers through the lilac feathers of the youngers wings before gently stretching them out and brushing them. "How are you so good at taking care of wings?" Jimin mumbled. "You don't even have any."
"I knew someone with wings like yours." Yoongi said as he started at the base of Jimin's wings and worked his way out. He was just about finished one of the wings when the door opened and in came Namjoon.
"Oh," the leader seemed surprised for a moment. "I almost forgot you do that." He smiled and scratched the back of his head.
"I can't help it if you always somehow end up plucking one of my feathers out." Jimin replied as he patted the bed near him and Yoongi.
Namjoon cringed. "Yeah, sorry, I'm not great with feathers and stuff." He said before heading over and sitting on the bed to watch Yoongi start brushing the other wing.
"You should let yours out." The eldest said. "You've had them cramped up for nearly a week, they must be sore." He turned to Namjoon for a moment with a raised eyebrow. Namjoon scrunched up his face and fidgeted. Their leader never liked showing his wings. Even though he wasn't the only one with large wings his weren't as fragile as Taehyung's and radiated power, which was probably why he made a good leader. "Namjoon." Yoongi said sternly.
Namjoon sighed. "Okay, okay." The woosh from Namjoon's wings was accompanied by a pop or two from the stiff joints in his large, shimmery, ash grey, scaled wings. The blond groaned in relief before falling face first into the bed covers, wings nearly knocking into Yoongi. When standing, Namjoon's wings nearly touched the floor.
"Feel better?" Yoongi smiled knowingly. A affirmative grumble from their leader was all the response he received. Yoongi had just finished brushing Jimin's wings and the youngest was putting his shirt on when a knock sounded at the door.
Seokjin opened the door with a smile. "Dinner's ready." He said. The three in the room quickly got up and headed into the dining room where the others were waiting. All seven sat at the table, Namjoon, Hoseok, Jimin and Taehyung all had their wings out while Seokjin, Yoongi and Jungkook didn't have wings.
They had the tv on while they ate and conversed but their attention was turned to said tv when an important news notice came on.
"Several dozen people have fallen severely ill in the past month, this bizarre and deadly virus seems to be only infecting those with large wings. Scientific experts are working hard to find a cure." The news reporter said. "Even though nothing has worked as of yet."
"That doesn't sound good at all." Hoseok said not to anyone in particular. Yoongi looked to Namjoon and Taehyung, they could become affected by the disease if it travels to Korea. It wasn't specified how the disease was spread but they would still have to be careful. As popular idols the members of BTS never showed their wings in public. Though many people had speculations over if they had wings and what kind, it was a popular thought for Jungkook to have large wings even though he had none and many wondered it Taehyung's wings from blood sweat and tears were like his real wings or not.
"Let's just hope it doesn't spread too much." Seokjin said, an unusually serious look on his face. There was a unanimous wave of agreement through the others before they ate the rest of their dinner in a comfortable silence, they had to get on a plane the next day.
That night when Yoongi was nearly asleep he felt Seokjin toss and turn in his bed that was pushed against Yoongi's. "Stop." He mumbled. "I can hear you thinking."
Seokjin sighed deeply. "Yoongi." He said softly in the darkness.
Yoongi hummed lowly in response.
Seokjin took a deep, almost shaky breath. "Do you ever wish you could have wings?" He whispered.
Yoongi was silent for a moment. He could tell Seokjin was staring into the darkness, at the ceiling. "No." He replied. "I've never wanted wings."
"Oh," Yoongi could hear Seokjin turn on his side to face him. "Sometimes I wish I could have wings. And be special." He whispered softly.
"Wings can be a burden." Yoongi countered, searching for Seokjin's hand beneath the covers of the blankets. "You're special just the way you are." He whispered as he laced his fingers with Seokjin's and fell asleep.
-
The trip to the airport was normal, small carry on bags with only the things they really needed. Yoongi made a point to carry some wing care items for the others with him, The others tended to have things they carried with them too. There was people everywhere, fans blocking entrances and crowding around. Taehyung was always nervous around crowds, he always said he wasn't sure why but Yoongi and Hoseok figured it was a natural instinct due to his wings being fragile since they contained no bone structure.
The group were heading out mainly for a photo shoot. Yoongi thought it was a bit odd to travel all that way for some photos of them but he wouldn't argue. Therefore, they had carry on bags big enough for a couple nights of clothes and things. On the plane Yoongi was sat at a window with Seokjin next to him, Jimin and Taehyung were in front of him while Jungkook and Hoseok behind him, Namjoon was two rows in from of him. Yoongi's back ached and he couldn't get comfortable in his seat. He had a bad feeling.
There wasn't many people Yoongi noticed when he got up to go to the toilet. It was a small plane. Just their little group took up half that plane. They had a couple of staff with them, most of them were already there and some coming later. When Yoongi got back to his seat Seokjin was fast asleep, mouth slightly parted as he breathed. Even though the black haired boy had seen it a million times before, being roommates and all, he still found it hard not to stare at the elder. Yoongi looked over to where Jimin was, half expecting him to be there to say 'I told you so' but he wasn't. Yoongi managed to get past Seokjin without waking him and sat down in his seat, he looked over at the others in the plane and felt a chill down to his bones.
Yoongi was nearly asleep when it started. The whole plane jumped, startling awake many of the passengers. The seatbelt light came on even though they were only halfway through their flight. Yoongi clicked his seatbelt on and helped a half awake Seokjin do the same. "What's going on?" Seokjin asked, wide eyed after another jolt from the plane. Yoongi heard Jimin squeak and could tell he was hanging on to Taehyung.
"Oh my god." Hoseok's voice caused Yoongi to turn around, the younger was pale as he stared out the window, Jungkook still somehow asleep next to him. Yoongi quickly opened his window curtain to look out.
The planes wing engine was on fire.
"Buckle Jungkook in." Yoongi said to Hoseok who snapped out of his trance to buckle both his own and Jungkook's seatbelts.
"What's happening?" Jimin's voice practically squeaked. Yoongi would have answered if Namjoon hadn't.
He looked to Seokjin next to him, he looked very uneasy. An explosion sounded and the plane jumped again, the lights flickered and went out. Yoongi didn't have to look to know the wing had come off the plane. The plane started to swerve and descend rapidly. Yoongi caught a glimpse of the people on the other side of the plane panicking, he felt sick to his stomach.
Oxygen masks dropped down, alarms sounded, people yelled, the plane was somehow not heading dead straight into the ground, it seemed the pilot was doing his best to land the plane as safely as he could and in the middle of nowhere. Panic filled Yoongi's system as the plane dropped. He caught a glimpse of Namjoon jumping over the back of his seat and letting out his wings to help protect Jimin and Taehyung. Another jolt and he saw Hoseok do the same for a now awake Jungkook as the plane tipped to the side ever so slightly. Yoongi looked to Seokjin who had tears pricking at his eyes and it took him all of two seconds to decide to do the same as the others.
The plane hit the ground.
