Work Text:
Kim Seokjin (Hufflepuff ’92)
Min Yoongi (Slytherin ’93)
Hot summer days were not his favorite but that day was different. The little boy sat on the step before the front door for what seemed like hours, his mother was making lunch while his dad was away, out of town, doing whatever wizard dads did.
“Honey,” his mom called from the hall that connected to the kitchen, “You know an owl is the one bringing your letter not the postman.”
Eleven year old Min Yoongi frowned and looked at the door, his small fingers pulling slowly the lose edges of his shorts.
“But mom what if the owl gets lost?” he asked, fidgeting more in his place, “We live far away from Hogwarts…”
Truth was he didn’t even know where Hogwarts was located, his dad had told him all sorts of stories about the magical castle and he had believed every single one.
“Then we’ll make sure to look for that letter,” his mother said with a tender smile, “Even if we have to go to the deepest of seas and vastest of lands, that letter is yours, darling.”
Yoongi chuckled at his mom’s security; she always knew how to calm the little bundle of nerves that Yoongi was. The boy ignored the way his mom stared at him after that, he also ignored the way his cheeks turned a funny bright red – it wasn’t the “cute” blush you’d see in porcelain dolls or you read about in romance novels, oh no, it was a bright and strong red that resembled more the color of a clown’s nose.
Yoongi was a metamorphmagus and he was too young to control his powers properly. His mother, who was a muggle, still thought it was unusual but endearing nonetheless. It sure was hard to explain to Yoongi’s muggle teachers why the little boy went from coal dark hair to an ashy blond on the first day of preschool.
Yoongi finally gets the letter at 3:01pm on a Friday.
He doesn’t know that his neighbor, Kim Seokjin, a tall and lanky boy with puffy lips and a chirpy laugh also got a letter from the same Wizarding School.
“So what are your plans for the end of the summer?” Seokjin asked with a smile, they’re currently letting time pass at the park nearby their homes; Yoongi sits comfortably in one of the swings while Seokjin walks around him, playing with stones, “Anything exciting?”
Yes, Yoongi thought with a smirk, looking up and down at Seokjin, I’ll go to the best Wizarding School ever and you’re going to stay here studying boring Math.
“Not really,” he answered, “I’m changing schools…”
“Oh really?” Seokjin exclaimed, grabbing the chains of the swing Yoongi was using, “I’m also transferring! Where are you going?”
“Uh, I don’t know.” Yoongi lied, “Just a boarding school outside of town. I guess we won’t see each other that often from now on, Jin.”
“Huh… I guess not.” He replied.
Yoongi hit his head with the edge of the bed that morning, maybe that’s why he was seeing things. There was no point for Kim Seokjin, a muggle, to be standing on platform 9 ¾ next to his parents – who were not wizards, not that Yoongi knew of at least, they were owners of a bakery downtown… they were bakers, not wizards! It makes no sense!
“Mom!” he discretely called, “Mom, look! It’s Jin, why is here?”
His mother looked all around until her eyes landed on the boy and his parents. She made a small sound of surprise and smiled, waving animatedly to catch their attention. Yoongi was shocked.
“Mom, no!” Yoongi called her again but his mother pulled him by the arm in the direction of their neighbors. Jin’s parents were also smiling greatly once they spotted them, the young boy Seokjin was bouncing on his hills the second he met eyes with Yoongi.
“Yoongi! You’re a wizard?” he exclaimed, “I had no idea! Well, I didn’t know I was one myself until last month but wow!”
Yoongi looked at his mother who was chatting to Jin’s parents, telling them all about his husband and how proud she was of Yoongi, even if the young boy hadn’t done a thing yet.
“They’ll do great!” his mother said, looking at Yoongi and the boy next to him, “I have a good feeling about this, I’m so happy Yoongi will have a friend from home in school!”
Yoongi didn’t cry when he said goodbye to his mother, unlike Jin, who gave a 5 minute hug to each of his parents.
“I didn’t know what was going on the first time it happened,” Seokjin explained as they walked down the train corridor, looking for an empty compartment to spend the ride, “But somehow all the glasses at home were breaking. I didn’t mean to and mom actually considered taking me to the doctor. I was always scared it would happen at school but thankfully we got the letter and one kind professor went to our house! I can’t wait to see her again!”
“A professor?” Yoongi hadn’t had a professor visit him, was he less special?
“Yes, because dad was about to rip the letter in half… you see mom and dad aren’t wizards, you know that, right?” Jin explained, “And dad said it was probably some ridiculous joke until a tall lady with black clothes appeared in our fireplace – there were huge green flames and Jjangu almost had a heart attack! It was pretty funny actually…”
Yoongi was scared to admit that he had been a little jealous; he was supposed to be the only wizard on his block at least, wasn’t he? And of all people, the other one had to be Seokjin. Jin had always been the taller kid, the smarter kid, the one that had the better jokes and on Halloween he always got more candy. Why Jin?
“Yoongi?” Jin called his name as Yoongi leaned his forehead against the window, “I’m happy you’re here… I know we’re not friends – you’ve pointed that out several times but- I was really scared to come here all by myself.”
He didn’t know what to say.
“I can tell this is where you belong, I’m not so sure about myself.” Jin continued, “I heard your mom say you had been studying spells; I don’t even know how to grab my wand…”
“Well…” Yoongi tried when he noticed Jin’s smile started to disappear, “You came here to learn. You belong here just as much as I do.”
“So… which house would you like to be in?” Yoongi gave a friendly smile to Jin, hoping the other wouldn’t feel so sad.
Jung Hoseok (Hufflepuff)
Kim Namjoon (Ravenclaw)
('94)
Jung Hoseok walks to the Hufflepuff common room at the end of the afternoon thinking the first week at the castle hadn’t been so bad.
Obviously he wasn’t counting the first night after dinner, when he spent the entire time vomiting his guts out because he had eaten too many sausages, turkey, pie and jelly. He wasn’t counting his first potions class when he accidentally dropped the whole content of a Forgetfulness Potion to the floor – half the class forgot what they had done that day, earning Jung Hoseok detention and 30 points from his House.
He wasn’t even going to think about the first time he saw a ghost – but it wasn’t just a ghost, it was the Bloody Baron, with his hideous sword and dripping blood from his clothes. Hoseok passed out and woke up with a change of clothes, he had actually peed his pants.
He wasn’t thinking about all of those.
Instead he thought about all the times he had laughed, the three friends he had made so far – one of them his roommate Lee Jooheon – how he made a feather float in the air on his first Charms class, the beautiful magical creatures he had seen on the Hogwarts fields and the excitement he felt in his chest when he thought about one day flying a Hippogriff.
No, he shouldn’t. He’s afraid of heights. He could still pet its head.
Hoseok is walking down the main staircase when he hears a whisper. He stops on his tracks, looks around but there’s no one. Maybe another ghost, he thinks he can deal with ghosts now, they’re pretty harmless, his mother told him on her last letter.
Hoseok takes another step when he hears it again, it’s clearer this time and it sounds like someone trying to get his attention. He takes a look around but the hallway is empty apart from a group of boys – upper class men.
“Hello?” he asks, “Is anyone there?”
“Hey…” he hears the whisper, “Down here.”
Hoseok looks down, underneath the staircase where a small boy, probably a first year like him, is sitting between two sculptures. The shadows of the stairs don’t let him see his face, so Hoseok comes closer.
Hoseok thought his second week had been going well until he saw the face of that boy. It was something that was surely going to make him have nightmares for days. His face wasn’t really a face, but a mass of bruises, pustules and boils – he wasn’t bleeding but he did see pus coming from several spots. Hoseok tries not to scream but he fails, he lets out a small shriek and falls on his butt.
“Don’t scream!” the boy begs, extending his arms and trying to show a smile that actually transforms into a more horrible expression, “Help me?”
“Why- who- wh-h-hy are you like that?” Hoseok carefully asks, crawling until his back touches the wall behind him.
“It’s a long story,” the boy sighs, “But just know I’m more handsome than this.”
Hoseok almost chuckles but the sight in front of him doesn’t let him. The strange boy takes a look at their surroundings; the group of boys is still down the hall and in a couple of minutes the staircase will be filled with students going to the Great Hall for dinner.
“I really need your help,” he tells Hoseok, “Can you help me…what’s your name?”
“Jung Hoseok,” he answers, looking at the crest in the boy’s chest and the color of his tie – he’s a Ravenclaw and for some reason his voice sounds familiar.
“Okay, Hoseok,” he answers, “Do you think you can help me?”
Hoseok doesn’t know why, but he nods.
“You’re gonna go to the Slytherin table in the Great Hall and look for Min Yoongi, okay?” he says quickly.
“Min Yoongi? Slytherin’s Min Yoongi?” Hoseok asks with a moan and a shiver, he’s heard that name before, “Really?”
“He’s not a Basilisk, okay?” he tells him with a roll of his eyes, “He’s just a kid like you and me, alright? He’s a short pale boy with… uh… I don’t know what hair color he’ll have today, he’s just pale. You’re gonna tell him Kim Namjoon is looking for him and he’s probably going to spend the night in the Hospital Wing if he doesn’t bring his butt here quickly. Can you help me or not?”
Hoseok doesn’t know why, but he nods again. He runs to the Great Hall and three minutes later, Hoseok comes with Min Yoongi in tow. There’s a Hufflepuff boy coming with Yoongi as well, but Hoseok doesn’t know his name.
“Joon? The hell happened to you?” Min Yoongi asks, crouching to the boy’s level. Hoseok stands behind them – keeping a careful distance between him and Min Yoongi, who has black hair that evening.
“Jin hyung?” Namjoon says instead, looking at the oldest Hufflepuff in there, “Why are you here?”
“This kid said you might be going to the Hospital Wing!” the boy named Jin says, the tips of his ears are red and his eyes are open wide in worry, “What happened?”
“It’s a long story,” he shrugs, “I don’t know the counter spell to this and I really don’t want a teacher to get involved.”
“Who did this?” Yoongi asks instead, frowning.
“It doesn’t matter,” Kim Namjoon says, “Can you do it or not?”
“Do you think I’m gonna let some bastard do this to my cousin and get away with it?” Yoongi says instead, “Who was it?”
“Yoongi, language…” Jin warns.
“Hyung, you’re 12.” Namjoon replies, “It was a fifth year, it doesn’t even matter, alright?”
“How did a fifth year- what the hell did you do for a fifth year to do this?” Yoongi asks.
“I tried to correct his potion… now that I look back it was a stupid thing to do.” he explains, “Professor Kang was impressed but well- the guy wasn’t. He followed me after class and cornered me with his friends…”
“Why were you even on a fifth year’s potion’s class?” Yoongi asks this time and to be honest, Hoseok is kind of curious as well.
“Professor Kang was impressed after our first potions class and wanted to see what I could do… she said I could be her assistant if I wanted!” he answers with a smile that doesn’t look like a smile at all.
“God, you’re such a nerd.” Yoongi says and pulls out his wand; he says something under his breath that Hoseok can’t hear and slowly, Kim Namjoon’s face starts to look normal – no bruises, no boils and no pus.
“It might be a good idea to make some Boil Cure for that, Joonie,” Jin tells him, coming closer to inspect his face, “Great job, Yoongi!”
Namjoon touches his face and smiles right after, knowing the effect of the curse is gone. Hoseok can see a cute tiny dimple showing on Namjoon’s cheek and just then he realizes why he seemed so familiar: Namjoon is the first year genius, the one all his teachers talk about, the Ravenclaw prodigy the Sorting Hat couldn’t shut up about.
“You’re Kim Namjoon!” Hoseok says, “We have Astronomy and Muggle Studdies together!”
“Yes?” he replies, standing up and dusting off his robes, he extends his hand for Hoseok to shake, “Thank you for helping me, Hoseok… I’m sorry I scared you with how ugly I looked.”
“Looked?” Yoongi chuckles, “You’re still quite ugly to me.”
Jin elbows Yoongi on the ribs with a chuckle, “I’m Kim Seokjin,” the tallest of the four says, “I’ve seen you around our common room, you’re the first year with the Chameleon! Nice to meet you!”
“Oh yes! That’s Kimmy!” Hoseok responds with a bright smile, happy that his pet gets recognition. “Nice to meet you!”
“I’m hungry,” Yoongi says, scratching his belly.
“Nice to meet you, hungry, I’m Jin,” the other replies with a cackle and Hoseok has to hold his hand over his mouth to not laugh. Namjoon chuckles a little while Yoongi is looking at Jin with a death stare, his hair starts to get red very slowly, like the color of cherries, from the roots to the tips. Hoseok has seen the boy do this several times and he still doesn’t understand why – it’s one of the reasons why there are so many rumors about Min Yoongi.
“I promised mom I wouldn’t get detention this year,” Yoongi says as he walks back to the Great Hall, his hair turning black once again, “I promised her I wouldn’t…”
Jin laughs loudly as he follows Yoongi, Namjoon is about to go when he notices Hoseok is awkwardly standing there.
“Aren’t you coming?” Namjoon asks, “I heard we’re having turkey tonight!”
Turkey still makes him nauseous but he doesn’t tell Namjoon that, he just follows along, walking next to his new Ravenclaw friend.
Park Jimin
Kim Taehyung
(Gryffindor '95) x2
It was Yoongi’s third year at Hogwarts.
As usual, the first day back to school was the longest. There he was, on his spot at the Slytherin table in the far left waiting for the feast to begin. He had his new robes on – the ones his mother had to buy because he had grown a total of 16 cm since the year before and his old ones didn’t fit anymore – his roommates since first year Yoo Kihyun, Lee Minhyuk and Do Kyungsoo sat in front of him, chatting animatedly about new courses and Quidditch matches.
He was too well familiarized with the usual scent of burned candles and wood, the clattering of bronze cups and the booming laughter of students. He had ridden the train with Jin, Namjoon and Hoseok but they were currently sitting in their respecting House tables, talking amongst their fellow House mates – he couldn’t see them.
Yoongi was hungry, but what was new? He still had to wait for the Sorting Ceremony to start.
As soon as the thought flew from his mind, the main doors opened and the line of new students started to come in. He couldn’t see anyone clearly; he just took glimpses of scared and excited faces. Did he look so stupid in his first year? Probably.
The group of new kids gathers close to the main table at the end of the Hall and everyone is whispering things, chatting, paying attention to the first name that will be called. Yoongi notices a pair of boys that are at the back, one is shorter and one is taller, one has chubby cheeks and the other has a big forehead. They are holding hands – no, they aren’t holding hands, but it almost seemed like it – they were holding to their pinkies. Yoongi almost thought it was cute.
The names get called, one by one and each House gains more students, there are claps and cheers and so far only one Slytherin has joined them, a short girl called Hwasa.
“Hey, more space at the Common Room!” Minhyuk cheers and a Ravenclaw girl snorts behind them.
Suddenly a Kim Taehyung is called, a skinny boy gives triumphant steps towards the Sorting Hat and the stool - he’s one of the kids that Yoongi noticed before and his friend is now standing alone, playing with his thumbs and tie. Yoongi doesn’t think the Sorting Hat even touched his hair but loudly, its voice shouts Gryffindor! and the Hall gets filled with claps and cheers. Kim Taehyung hops off the stool and gives thumbs up to his friend, who returns it with a laugh.
Two more kids, two more Ravenclaws.
“Park Jimin!” calls the Head Mistress, Kim Taehyung’s friend walks to the stool – he tries to look confident but Yoongi can see he’s scared. Unlike the other kid, the Sorting Hat actually sits on his head and starts pondering where to place him. It takes a couple of seconds and Yoongi hates to admit he stretches his neck to have a proper look; the kid is muttering something, something no one else can hear. Yoongi is extremely curious.
Gryffindor!
More cheers. Park Jimin laughs and runs to the table, where Kim Taehyung receives him with a hug.
At the end Yoongi has a nice meal. He’s happy to be back at Hogwarts.
“Yoongi! Come! You have to see this!” Kihyun shouts from the door of their room, “This is incredible!”
Yoongi runs behind Kihyun, following him up the stairs and towards the gardens. It had been four days since the entrance ceremony and things were going well – nothing out of the ordinary – not until his eyes landed on a pair of kids, but not just any pair of kids, the pair of Gryffindors everyone was talking about.
Some of his classmates (girls mostly) only cooed at them when they passed holding pinkies. He had seen Park Jimin and Kim Taehyung once or twice along the corridors, they were a funny pair, talking among themselves and focusing on nothing specific. It was like they were in their own little world. People said they were geniuses, he wasn’t so sure.
“Are they serious?” Yoongi asked to no one and he heard Kihyun laugh. The pair was flying up in the sky in brooms, dangerously high considering they were first years and they weren’t even in the Quidditch field. A ton of students had gathered in the gardens, cheering, clapping and shouting towards the pair in excitement. Yoongi noticed right away the kids weren’t using the Hogwart’s brooms but other brands – he didn’t know much about Quidditcha anyway. They were flying at a great speed, over people’s heads and all around them; Kim Taehyung even dared to do tricks like doing 360 turns or trying to fly without hands, throwing peace signs to any girl he could spot. Park Jimin only laughed, following whatever act his friend did.
“People say they asked to be in the Gryffindor Quidditch team,” Kihyun explained.
“But they’re first years...” Yoong replied, “First years can’t play Quidditch.”
“Yeah, exactly,” his friend said with a laugh, “Look at them now, first years can’t play huh?”
Park Jimin and Kim Taehyung flew higher in the air, so much that they became small figures in the distance. People’s cheers calmed down for a moment but the second, there was an explosion filled with colors – Whiz-bangs – and the crowd cheered even louder. The pair flew all around them once again; Yoongi could hear a soft and high laugh behind his ear at one point.
“Can you believe these kids?” Jin appeared by Yoongi’s shoulder, “They wanna get expelled on the first week!”
“I think they’re geniuses,” Minhyuk said next to Kihyun, clapping and laughing, “Too bad they’re Gryffindors. Imagine a pair like that in our team!”
“But look at it this way,” Kihyun replied, “Gryffindor is going to have -1000 points by the end of the term; the House Cup is ours this year…”
“Hey! What about Hufflepuff?” Jin exclaimed.
“What’s a Hufflepuff?”
“Fuck off, Minhyuk.” Hoseok said, coming from somewhere in the crowd, Minhyuk only laughed. Namjoon was with him, “Hufflepuff rocks…”
“They’re gonna get in so much trouble,” Namjoon said, “But I guess if they want to make a point…”
“This isn’t how you do it,” Jin replied with a frown and crossing his arms.
It didn’t take long for a professor to come running down the gardens, using a Sonorous Charm to get the boys’ attention. The crowd’s cheers died, the Whiz-bangs were turned off and Yoongi was positive Park Jimin and Kim Taehyung were going to get expelled.
Yoongi would rather do homework in his room, on his bed, wearing his pajamas but Minhyuk never knows when to shut up, so he takes his things to the library where there’s peace – and he knows Minhyuk would never set a foot in there. It’s early in the morning of a Saturday – most of the students are still asleep or wandering all around the castle – why the hell is Minhyuk even awake? That kid drinks vitamin C instead of pumpkin juice, Yoongi is sure.
He finds a table in the back and opens several books, ready to start his potions assignment. After minutes, he notices a figure on the opposite corner, someone smaller than him, with short dark hair and light skin, his hands juggle a book and a quill, he munches on a chocolate bar. Yoongi remembers his name from that first night a week ago, it’s Park Jimin.
“Hey,” he calls, not exactly sure why, “Aren’t you one of the Quidditch kids?”
The other looks surprised but chuckles softly, “Yeah, I guess I am…”
“I thought you had gotten expelled,” Yoongi tells him, he’s actually surprised of seeing him there.
“Nah, it wasn’t that big of a deal,” Jimin says with a shrug.
“It wasn’t a big deal?” Yoongi repeats, “You got half the school to cheer your name!”
Jimin chuckles again, his cheeks tint pink, Yoongi almost thinks is cute, “Well, I’m not allowed to talk about it that much,” he says, “Especially if it’s to brag…”
“So…are you going to be in the team?” Yoongi asks, wanting to talk more.
“I don’t know yet,” Jimin answers, “Professor Choi was impressed but he’s still mad at us. He said we could be in the team once we learned not to be so reckless and to appreciate the art of Quidditch – whatever that means.”
“So you have to wait until next year anyway?”
“Nuh uh,” Jimin says cutely, shaking his head, “He said we could make him an essay about why we want to be in the team. Taehyungie will probably write two lines saying ‘please let me’ but I really want him to see that we’re serious… I’m sure he’ll let us after he reads mine!”
Yoongi smiles at his enthusiasm, the kid really wants to be in that team if he’s awake before 8am on a Saturday.
“I’m Min Yoongi.” he says and it’s the first time he has ever introduced himself voluntarily, he’s not sure why. Jimin smiles at him and Yoongi knows the other hasn’t heard the rumors about him just yet, he doesn’t look scared.
“Hi!” Jimin sing-songs, “I’m Park Jimin!”
“I know…” he says, “I mean- the whole school knows your name by now.”
Jimin chuckles, biting a chunk of his chocolate bar.
“So… you guys didn’t get detention at all?” he asks, scribbling nonsense on his papers.
“Of course we did!” Jimin laughs, “We have to clean the potions classroom from now until Winter Holidays and we can’t really fail any assignment or stop doing our homeworks. We’re pretty much on probation…”
Yoongi doesn’t finish his potions homework, but he makes a new friend called Park Jimin.
And that friend came with a shadow: a boy that was more like a Cherry Bomb, but went with the name Kim Taehyung.
Jeon Jungkook
(Gryffindor '97)
Jungkook is trembling when he sets foot on those steps, the talking hat is about to eat his head. He sits on the stool and takes a look at the four tables in front of him, filled with kids of his age and older – he looks for them quickly, he looks for his new friends, he looks for Taehyung and Jimin, he can’t see them anywhere.
He hears the hat whisper something by his ear.
What do we have here? Why were you crying kid?
You will be great, I see that… You can do so much… So young… And so brave…
Gryffindor! The hat shouts and Jungkook smiles, Taehyung and Jimin are in Gryffindor! He runs to the table with the red flags and a lot of people are clapping for him – he finally finds the boys a couple of seats at the back, they are clapping as well.
“You did it, Jungkookie!” he hears Taehyung shout.
This will be a very exciting year.
Jungkook is not so scared anymore.
