To The Waters And The Wild

Summary:

Starting at age 10, humans are given companion animals that develop alongside them.
These animals can range anywhere from a goldfish to a horse to even a dragon.
The only catch is that they are assigned based on your behaviour during childhood.

"Oh my god, sometimes I question why you didn't end up with a turtle or a sloth!"

No, a wolf makes sense.
With a sharp mind and an equally sharp tongue, Yoongi was not one to be messed with. As a kid he was determined and stubborn, never understanding the logic of "pick on someone your own size"

Chapter Text

Yoongi woke like he always did, slowly and unwillingly. His slumber had been interrupted by the shrill ringing of his mobile phone. Throwing an arm out from under the covers, he blindly fumbled for his phone on the bedside table. His hand grasped it and he pulled to his ears, swiping across to answer it grumpily.

"What do you-"

His question was cut off by Jeongguk rushing over his words frantically.

"Yoongi! Yoongi we need your help! We're at the school, they've got us surrounded and I think they're going to hurt us! Jin said something about bringing King, I don't know what he's talking about but- Jimin? Oh no, please god-"

---

Yoongi pulled into the high school parking lot, eyes scanning the grounds for any sign of his friends. It was mostly empty, as to be expected during the summer. He knew that some school clubs still used the facilities, especially the sports teams.
King sat in the passenger seat, eyes half shut as Yoongi combed his left hand repeatedly through his grey fur, a habit he had picked up that resurfaced when he was anxious.

"I swear to god, I can't leave them alone for one day" Yoongi grumbled to himself, but it was to mask his worry and growing anger.

Suddenly Apollo, Taehyung's puppy, emerged from the direction of the sports hall. He was shaking with fear as he approached Yoongi's car.

"What the fuck? Where's Taehyung?!" Yoongi hit the brakes, opening his door and whistling loudly.

Apollo bounded over, his usually wagging tail hanging between his legs as he came to halt at Yoongi's car door.

"Where is that kid? Huh?"

He patted his leg and Apollo leapt up onto Yoongi's lap, scrambling across and into the backseat.

"King. Stay"

King, who was about to start sniffing at the puppy curiously, paused and turned his head to Yoongi.

Yoongi shut the door hurriedly and began driving towards the sports hall, squinting his eyes as he searched for his friends. He spotted a group of students gathered around and pulled his car closer.

Outside the front door of the hall Jimin sat on the ground, nursing a bloody nose. Jeongguk stood protectively in front of him, sporting a busted lip, no doubt the result of a heavy punch.
Taehyung and Jin were stood in front of them, arguing angrily with the ringleader.
Several boys that had given Jimin trouble before stood around Yoongi's friends, their dogs circling around the group, teeth bared.
The leader stepped forward, pushing Taehyung's chest and Yoongi felt anger coursing through his body as he opened the door.

---

Yoongi arrived like something out of a nightmare, pure venom in his eyes, his presence dripping with fury. Slamming the door behind him, he stormed towards the group. King followed at his heels, jaw snapping menacingly as he released a vicious growl.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" He spat at the other guys.

Kind snarled and lunged towards the nearest dog. The dog let out a frightened yelp and ran in the other direction, his owner sprinting after him.

"Holy shit" Jeongguk breathed, eyes widening in shock.

The other students began to back away and Yoongi snapped his fingers, pointing towards the ringleader. King leapt towards him, teeth bared and hackles rising.

"No!" Jimin cried, trying to stand up. He immediately began to fall and Jeongguk rushed towards him, arms clinging around him to steady him.

Yoongi didn't even flinch, watching with an almost bored expression as King continued to approach the bully. King followed orders from him, not Jimin.

"He will kill you, you know"

The bully yelled out, turning around and beginning to sprint away, his friends following close after. King let out another growl and took off, snapping at their heels but never trying to catch them.

With a sob Jimin turned and stumbled into the gym, towards the locker room. Jeongguk rushed after him, throwing an arm around him to support him.

Taehyung turned to Yoongi with relief in his eyes, moving forward and throwing his arms around him.

"Thank you for coming to the rescue" He pulled away and beamed at the older boy gratefully

Jin walked forward, patting Yoongi on the shoulder and smiling at him fondly

"Thank you, Yoongi" Jin turned towards King, the wolf returning after chasing the others away. "And thank you, King"

The wolf bounded towards Jin, eyes gleaming as threw himself at the eldest boy's feet.
Taehyung opened his mouth to say something but spotted Apollo sat in the backseat of the car. His eyes lit up and his face broke into a beaming smile once again

"Apollo! You found Apollo!"

The door opened and Jimin emerged, Jeongguk following with his dance bag. Jimin’s scared eyes connected with Yoongi’s and the older boy’s stomach filled with dread.

Can we please leave now?” Jimin’s tired plea drifted across and Yoongi gazed down towards the ground, nodding his head and opening the backdoor.

Taehyung climbed in, gladly reunited with his equally ecstatic companion, Jeongguk following him. Jimin reached out a hand and Yoongi grabbed it, gently guiding him to his seat. He noticed the blood dried on his face and sighed sadly, grabbing a tissue from his pocket and dabbing at his friend’s cheek.

“Here, kid, wet this and the blood should come right off. You wouldn’t want your parents to see you like this, huh?” Yoongi said it softly but it’s his way of warning everyone to keep quiet about what happened.

Jin walked around to the passenger seat, calling for King to join him. The wolf happily obliged, resting his head on the eldest boy’s lap and snuggling into him. Yoongi cracked a grin at this, the sight of his oldest friend and his companion warming his mood.

"Your icy gaze is thawing!" Jin cried, a laugh escaping his lips as he threw his arms up in mock celebration.

Yoongi rolled his eyes in response, starting the car and pulling out of the car park.

“He’s not yours, is he? Like you wouldn’t have something so dangerous, would you?”

The question caught Yoongi by surprise. He could hear the unease and fear in the question, but he didn't expect the cold tone.

“Um, n-n-no, of course not, of course not. No, he’s not mine, he’s, uh, a neighbour’s, I just borrowed him” Yoongi stumbled over the lie and didn’t think he would get away with it until he heard the relieved sigh from behind him.

"Thank god, he terrifies me. You terrified me with him. I've never seen you like that before and I hope I never do again"

Although he could feel the sick feeling begin to grow in his stomach, Yoongi glanced up into the mirror, and sent a reassuring smile to the worried eyes in the backseat.

"Don't worry, I'll never lose my temper like that again, as long as none of you guys get hurt" Yoongi promised, but he really shouldn't have.

---

“Hey Yoongi, your parents said I could come wake you- “

Yoongi was burrowed beneath the bedcovers. One arm rested under his pillow and the other was flung over King. The wolf lay sleeping alongside him. There was a peaceful expression on Yoongi’s face, contrary to the usual scowl or smirk.

The sight of his friend’s contented smile would have usually warmed Hoseok’s heart if he wasn’t freaking over the fact that there was a large, dangerous predator laid on his friend, eyes cracking open.

Upon spotting a stranger in the room, King moved protectively in front of Yoongi and began to growl, the low rumbling noise waking Yoongi from his slumber.

“What’s going on?” Yoongi croaked, his voice deep and broken from sleep.

“Not to alarm you, but your neighbour’s wolf seems to have claimed you as his prey whilst you were sleeping” Hoseok’s scared voice responded.

He had heard the story of how Yoongi and his neighbour’s wolf had come to the rescue of his friends a few weeks ago and assumed the wolf in Yoongi’s bed was King.

Yoongi sat bolt upright, looking around the room, his sleepy eyes moving straight past King.

“Huh? What? Where?” Yoongi asked dazedly, eyes finally landing on his equally confused friend.

Before Hoseok could answer, the older boy began to speak again.

“Wait, my neighbour’s don’t have a wolf” Yoongi frowned.

A moment of silence passed as Hoseok stared at the wolf on the bed and Yoongi’s tired brain caught up with his mouth.

“Oh shit” The older boy finally realised, his mouth falling open as he glanced at Hoseok, then King and then back at Hoseok.

“Oh my god, oh my god, I’m so stupid!” Yoongi began to run his hands through King’s fur as he tried to think of an excuse, wearing a stressful expression on his face.

“Hey Yoongi, I don’t mind if you have a wolf as a companion, I just don’t know why you’d keep it a secret from us” Hoseok shot him a reassuring smile as he began to move forward cautiously.

“Really? You’re not horrified?!”

“Maybe a little nervous, considering he was growling very angrily at me a few seconds ago”

Yoongi moved over, patting a space on the bed and his friend sat down, hands fidgeting on his lap.

“King, this is Hoseok, he’s a friend” Yoongi introduced, grabbing Hoseok’s hand and steering it towards the wolf.

King sniffed at it warily and Hoseok giggled as his wet nose tickled the skin. After hearing the laugh, King immediately seemed to brighten up, moving towards the boy and happily resting his head on Hoseok’s lap.

“His fur is so soft!” Hoseok gasped and Yoongi grinned proudly.

“King responds positively to people’s happiness” The older boy explained and Hoseok let out a small laugh before speaking

“I guess he’ll really love Tae”

They both chuckled and King rolled excitedly between the two of them, his paws waving eagerly in the air. There was a pause and then Hoseok spoke again.

“You are going to tell the others, aren’t you?”

Yoongi shifted uncomfortably even though he could tell the question would arise at some point.

“Um, well, Jin already knows” He offered, hands running through King’s coat once again.

“Jin knows? He can keep a secret!?” Hoseok said in surprise, “Well, I guess he has been your best friend forever”

Yoongi simply shrugged, unable to explain how understanding Jin was. Their eldest friend had always been there for him, helping him to realise that even though they knew King, the woman who began shrieking in the park didn’t, just like the kids in the park that ran away in fear didn’t either.

“Why didn’t you tell us, Yoongi?” Hoseok urged his friend to explain, taking the opportunity to investigate while his normally private friend was being open.

“You’ve got Hope, a canary” Yoongi began but Hoseok interrupted him.

“King won’t eat him, will he?” He cried, worried eyes glancing between the wolf and the other boy.

“He’s not going to eat your bird,” Yoongi reassured with an amused chuckle, then continued, “Hoseok, nobody is afraid of your canary because Hope can’t kill anyone. King can rip people to shreds and god, they’re aware of it. I can’t walk down the street without people sending me horrified or dirty looks. I wish I could, but I can’t”

“So, you’re afraid of what people will think?” Hoseok said unsurely, because his friend wasn’t the type to care about insignificant people’s opinion.

“I’m afraid they’re right to be scared, that maybe one day I might snap and really lose my temper, get in a bad fight or argument. King’s loyal, if someone tries to hurt me he will kill them. What happens when he reads the situation wrong? What happens if Jimin slaps me for teasing him or Namjoon accidentally hits me?”

Hoseok was quiet for a moment, mulling over what his friend said. He knew his friend had a point, but he also didn’t think Yoongi was telling him everything. After a few seconds, he decided to press Yoongi further.

“Is that the only reason? I can ask Jin, you know”

Yoongi pulled a face and sighed, wondering when Hoseok had learned to know when Yoongi wasn’t telling the whole truth.

“When I was a kid, it didn’t bother me as much because I didn’t know any better and King kinda looked like a big Husky dog or something. Now, I look like some sort of psycho with this wild animal alongside me. Jimin was afraid of me, Hoseok, that broke my heart. I don’t want him to be afraid of me.”

“Hey, hey, is that it? You think we’re gonna be afraid of you? You think Jimin is gonna be afraid of you?” Hoseok asked and Yoongi nodded his head in confirmation.

“It’s weird, seeing people screaming and yelling because I’m play fighting with King. I couldn’t even go running in the park with him because everyone immediately assumed he was chasing me, I had to get permission from coach to use to track at night.”

“You run?!” Came Hoseok’s shocked reply, eyes widening as he stared at his friend, who he had previously assumed was the laziest person in the world, if he excluded his passion for basketball. “I’ve never seen you practise or compete at school”

A light blush rose to Yoongi’s check as he admitted shyly “I tried out for the school team in freshman year, but the coach sent me to the county try outs instead. I’m on the regional and national team”

“What the fuck?!” Hoseok exclaimed, “Yoongi, seriously, what’s with all the secrets? I’m gonna have to hold an interrogation at this rate!”

Yoongi let out a bashful laugh before replying sheepishly “Sorry, but in my defence we only became friends last year”

“What other huge secrets are you keeping?” Hoseok joked, but he really should have expected his friend to take him seriously. He knew by now that Yoongi rather enjoyed being unpredictable

“I’m bisexual?”

---

“Have you guys checked out this app? If you enter in your companion, it tells you loads of stuff like your personality traits, career suggestions, likes and dislikes, it’s so cool!”

The seven best friends were gathered for their weekly movie night, but as usual the movie was long forgotten, playing on in the background as they all chatted. For the first time since they had all become friends, they were at Yoongi’s house. His parents worked the night shift during the summer and King was in their large backyard, probably chasing squirrels.

Taehyung was waving his phone excitedly as he informed them about the app, eyes sparkling and Yoongi smiled, reaching over to tousle his hair affectionately.

“Ooh try me! Enter rabbit!” Jeongguk begged, bouncing in his seat and probably causing distress to his poor rabbit, Orion.

“No! Hamster! Me first!” Jimin whined, pouting cutely and holding up his hamster, Sunshine.

“I don’t think either of you babies should get to go first!” Taehyung retorted, turning towards Yoongi. “What about you, hyung? Would you like to go first?”

“No thanks, kid” Yoongi began, but was interrupted by the others.

“Yeah! Enter Sloth””

“Sloth? He obviously has a turtle!”

“Don’t be silly! Yoongi has a cat!”

Yoongi rolled his eyes but underneath he was beginning to feel nervous. Finding no King to rub for comfort, he grabbed the closest thing and began to run his hands over Angel, Jin’s cat.

“See, he’s good with cats!”

Hoseok and Jin exchanged a look and Namjoon, who had been mostly silent, spoke up.

“Yoongi, is your companion still alive?”

It was very rare, but not unheard of to no longer have a companion, due to their death or possibly because they never arrived in the first place.

Everyone turned to Namjoon in surprise, eyes wide as they waited for Yoongi to deny or confirm his suspicion.

Yoongi however was suddenly realising why his best friend had been careful when speaking about what he had assumed was a sensitive topic.

He shook his head and heard sighs of relief. He felt far from relieved as he decided to tell the truth and explain the absence of his companion.

“Well, you see, unlike what you may think, I’m not embarrassed of my animal, and he is alive. He’s very much alive.”

Before Yoongi could continue he was interrupted by a loud howl, his wolf no doubt the source.

“Oh god, is that your neighbour’s wolf?” Jimin asked, wrapping his blanket tightly around himself in fear.

Yoongi immediately shut his mouth deciding he couldn’t tell the truth. He racked his brains for an excuse to give his waiting friends that explained everything without letting them know about King.

Jin however, realised this and moved closer to Yoongi, placing a supportive hand on his shoulder. Yoongi blinked at him and the eldest boy gave him an encouraging smile.

“Is it just me, or did that how sound like it came from your back garden?” Taehyung wondered aloud and Jeongguk murmured in agreement.

“That’s because he is in my back garden” Yoongi managed to finally reply.

“What? Shouldn’t you tell your neighbours? Why is King in there?”

There was another silence as Yoongi struggled to find the right words. He didn’t have to answer however because Namjoon finally understood and interjected,

“Because King is Yoongi’s”

Chapter Text

“What the fuck?!” Jeongguk exclaimed and Jin shot him a disapproving look.

“Is this true? You have a huge, terrifying wolf prowling around your garden at night?” Taehyung asked, exchanging a wide-eyed look with Jeongguk.

“Doesn’t his howling annoy your neighbours?” Namjoon added and as if on cue, King released another howl.

“Well, in all fairness he usually sleeps in my bed with me” Yoongi responded defensively, realising that it was pointless denying that King was his.

“In your bed?! You sleep with a wolf?!” Taehyung cried, mouth hanging open as he stared at Yoongi in shock.

“Well, don’t you sleep with Apollo in your bed? And Rap Monster sleeps at the foot of Namjoon’s bed!” Yoongi protested and upon hearing their names, the two dogs perked up, tails wagging as they gazed upwards.

“Yeah but they’re dogs!” Jeongguk countered, “They’re harmless! You sleep with a killing machine!”

Yoongi flinched and Jin sensed that the youngest had hit a raw nerve. He slapped the youngest on the arm and glared at him sternly.

“I know you’re upset that Yoongi didn’t tell you, but hear his reasons before you start calling out poor King” The eldest said in warning.

Jimin, who had been silent and reserved finally spoke up, eyes showing hurt as he whispered,
“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I didn’t want anybody to get hurt, or be scared. I don’t blame you for being afraid of King, but he’s a part of me. If you’re afraid of him then you’re afraid of me, so I thought if I kept it quiet about him, you guys would never fear me.”

It was silent for a moment until Namjoon spoke up.

“Yoongi, I hate to break it to you, but you can be pretty terrifying when you’re angry. It’s who you are and it’s the reason King is yours. You can hide him but you can’t hide who you are”

“What he said” Taehyung piped up, offering a small smile

Yoongi grinned weakly, glancing at Jimin who was still huddled in his blanket cocoon, his expression no longer scared but thoughtful instead.

“You should bring King in, he sounds lonely out there”

“Good idea” Yoongi said gruffly but his grin brightened and he got up, making his way to the back door.

Jin followed, Angel in his arms as he smiled softly at the younger boy. Flicking on the back-porch lights, he looked out the backdoor, eyes searching for King. When he found him though, he let out a surprised noise, almost dropping his cat in shock.

“What happened?” Yoongi asked, coming up behind Jin and peering outside.

King was stood in the garden at the bottom of the porch steps. Even in the dim lighting, Yoongi could see the blood dripping from his jaws.

“I guess he caught that squirrel”

Footsteps could be heard approaching behind them and Yoongi moved to stand in front of the door, shutting it and blocking the window.

“Distract them and I’ll bring King in for a bath” He hissed to Jin and the older boy gave him a panicked look, racking his brains for a distraction.

“Are you guys coming or what?” Jeongguk peeked his head through the kitchen door, blinking his eyes innocently as he gazed at his two eldest friends

“Ah yes, I’m coming now, my dear young boy” Jin practically purred, passing Angel into Jeongguk’s arms and quickly shoving the younger boy out of the room.

Yoongi cringed, stifling a laugh as he opened the door and let out a low whistle. King bounded up the steps and into the kitchen, almost skidding to a halt when Yoongi signalled for him to stop.

“So, you see, I wanted to, uh, tell you guys something very, very important” Jin’s voice drifted from the living room and Yoongi supressed another laugh at his friend’s struggle to think on his feet.

Yoongi began to lead King through the living room to the bathroom, relieved to see all his friends were turned towards Jin.

“Well, I wanted to tell you this thing, it’s rather big news, so be prepared” Jin desperately stalled whilst Yoongi winked at him and waved cheerily.

“Spit it out, if I didn’t know any better I would think you were trying to distract us or something”

Yoongi shot Jin a worried looking and began flapping his arms, signalling for Jin to get on with it.

“I’m in love with Yoongi!”

Yoongi paused mid-flail, mouth falling open as he let out a gasping “What?”

His previously oblivious friends whirled around, staring at Yoongi in confusion and shock. Upon spotting Hoseok and Jin, King began barking happily.

Yoongi remained frozen, hands paused in a windmill pose, crouched in front of a barking, blood covered wolf with his mouth gaping open.

“When I said to distract them, I meant do a funny dance, not confess that you love me!”

Jin grimaced, offering an apologetic smile which Yoongi responded by rolling his eyes, a smile creeping on his face though as he began to see the humour in the situation.

Jin clearly began to also realise how strange their friends must think they are as he let out a laugh. Within seconds he was doubled over, clutching his stomach as he cackled loudly, tears forming.

Yoongi’s legs gave out and he lay on his back, his body shaking with laughter as their five other friends looked on with amused smiles. Taehyung soon joined in and eventually everyone was crying with laughter.

“What on earth were you idiots thinking?” Namjoon exclaimed later after they had all recovered and Jin explained the situation.

“We weren’t thinking!” Jin answered and Yoongi yelled indignantly from the bathroom.

“Speak for yourself! Aren’t you supposed to be in love with me? That’s no way to speak to your soulmate”

Yoongi was attempting (read: failing) to wash King and every so often there was an excited bark followed by Yoongi grumbling loudly, causing the group to collapse into giggles.

There was a loud howl, startling Jimin and causing him to stare worriedly towards the bathroom door. Yoongi hadn’t made any noise in a while and the younger boy was becoming concerned. After a few more seconds of silence, Jimin decided to check on Yoongi himself

He got up, informing the others of his mission and making his way to the bathroom. Knocking, he opened the door and was met by the weirdest sight he’d seen that night, which was saying a lot.

Yoongi was stood in his boxers and shirt, jeans discarded in the corner of the room. The floor was covered in soap suds and towels. Instead of King being in the bath, the wolf was perched on the toilet seat, one paw on the side of the bath. Yoongi was kneeling in the bath and both were covered in bubbles. In fact, Yoongi was wearing a bubble beard and appeared to be on the middle of fashioning one for King.

“Sorry I couldn’t speak, I had bubbles in my mouth” Came Yoongi’s muffled greeting and King barked happily.

“Aren’t y-you supposed to be w-w-washing him, not t-the other way around?” Jimin managed to wheeze between laughs.

“Hey! His fur is going to be so damn soft!” Yoongi mumbled in defence.

“He might be scary but I’m glad to see he’s got his bubble priorities right”

Notes:

I did again
I wrote it in a way where it could be continued in so many different aspects
relationships, fears, backstories and even Yoongi's athletics thing could be developed
I love this idea okay, maybe it's my subconscious way of letting me be able to continue it
maybe I will
I wouldn't mind writing more bts and animal adventures and maybe developing a relationship?
this is just one scene after all...
let me know what you think, I love getting comments and always end up giggling at my phone.

Chapter Text

"Hey! Wanna join me for a run?"

"What the fuck, Jimin? It's not even noon yet"

Yoongi had awoken to his friend bouncing excitedly on his bed, laughter erupting from him every time he fell over.

It wasn't exactly the worst thing to wake up to but Yoongi was still going to grumble.

"Where's King by the way?" Jimin glanced around the room, as if he expected a wolf to magically appear out of thin air.

"Beats me" Yoongi sat up in bed, shrugging his shoulders.

"What?" Jimin plopped onto the bed, crossing his legs as he faced Yoongi, "You don't know where he is?"

"Probably wandering around the house, sleeping or in the garden?" Yoongi suggested, not at all bothered by the disappearance of his giant predator pet.

"You're way too calm for this" Jimin rolled his eyes, yet he couldn't exactly feel himself panicking.

He reasoned that if Yoongi wasn't worried, he didn't have a reason to be either.

Yoongi laid back down, rolling into his side and pulling the covers over him, "I'm so sleepy I probably wouldn't care if the house was on fire"

So maybe Jimin did have a reason to be worried.

"No don't go back to sleep! Let's go for a run!" Jimin crawled forward, throwing himself into Yoongi and pulling at his arm.

"I don't go for runs without King" Even though he was being plagued with Jimin's insistent pestering, Yoongi was doing a pretty convincing job of falling asleep.

Jimin hesitated for a moment and Yoongi sensed it, one eye cracking open to peer at his friend.

"Well then, let's bring King with us"

Yoongi smiled, an actual genuine smile before noon, and replied, "That's very considerate of you Jimin, but I'm afraid King isn't really welcome in many places"

"What?" Jimin frowned, "They can't do that! That can't be true!"

"Technically he's allowed," Yoongi's eyes fluttered shut as he continued, "But not many people like it"

“Well, fuck them!”

Yoongi’s eyes snapped back open and he was sure he was imagining things because there was no way Park Jimin had just swore viciously. Yet there he sat, unapologetic and daring Yoongi to say something.

“You don’t mean that” Yoongi scolded, beginning to get up because there was no way he was falling asleep.

“You were one of these people until like, three days ago?” Yoongi reminded, sending a pointed look in Jimin’s direction.

“Well, I was wrong! And so are they!” Jimin huffed, crossing his arms sulkily.

Yoongi sighed at his friend’s stubbornness before finally giving in. Jimin was determined to include King in their plans and really, how could he say no?

 ---

Despite his previous persistence, once they were out and walking with King, Jimin seemed to shrink back to his normal self, glancing dubiously between Yoongi and his wolf.

Not that it really mattered because Yoongi knew that he still meant what he said. Besides, he was bold enough for the both of them, especially in the presence of King.

Jimin remembers times where he had looked for Yoongi and found a different, crueller boy.

 ---

“Jimin, I’m on detention duty now if you’d like to discuss your project” Smiling kindly, Jimin’s new History teacher was one his favourites.

They chatted as they walked, mostly about the history novel Jimin was reading. Jimin was trying his best to describe the book but the words died on his lips as he entered the classroom.

The newly painted walls in the room were covered in students’ posters and best work. The sun shone in through the trees and came in the window, flickering and dancing as the leaves and branches moved outside. Its warm light made the colourful books on the shelves seem brighter, better.

And in the middle of the all the happy and welcoming vibes was his friend. Scowling, wild and nursing his bloody knuckles, Yoongi looked incredibly out of place.

“Some students here,” Jimin’s teacher glared pointedly at Yoongi, ignoring the other detention goers that were studying, “Just can’t seem to keep out of trouble”

Yoongi’s scowl deepened, his harsh eyes already swearing revenge as he opens his mouth to snarl out a spiteful comment.

Jimin shot him a desperate look, even though he wasn’t sure if the seething Yoongi sat there even knew who he was.

Apparently, he did, as he gritted his teeth together, choosing instead to sneer wordlessly at the oblivious teacher.

“Now Jimin, let’s get to work huh?”

Jimin could feel his eyes burning into him the entire hour, only once leaving to watch as another bruised students came in.

The student limped to a seat to the back, keeping as far away from Yoongi as possible.

“No, don’t infect the other students. Why don’t you sit beside your own kind?” This was the closest Jimin had ever come to disliking his teacher, as he indicated to the seat beside Yoongi.

“Sir, please don’t make me” The nameless student’s voice was pleading, evoking a strange sort of pity inside Jimin.

“Don’t act like you didn’t bring this on yourself”

Yoongi barely even spared him a glance, already glowering at Jimin and his teacher once again.

At the time Jimin thought of a cat, sinking its claws into his prey. Now he thinks of a wolf, sinking its teeth into his prey.

 ---

“So where should we go for a run?” Jimin asked and Yoongi cursed himself for agreeing to exercise.

“The track?” Yoongi hoped it was empty. He already regretted not taking a timetable when the coach offered one.

Jimin lead the way, skipping and smiling, singing songs under his breath. Yoongi could tell he was growing happier with each passing minute, and he thinks it’s exactly what Jimin deserves to be.

Happy.

“Race you to the track!” Jimin called suddenly, laughing as Yoongi groaned loudly. He chased after the younger boy for a few seconds, King obediently following at his heels.

Then there was a horrified shriek from somewhere, or at least Yoongi thinks there was, and he skidded to a halt. He can’t tell if he imagined it or not, but he was reminded of how he must look, in pursuit of Jimin like he’s hunting his prey.

Yoongi almost scolded himself aloud, but he spied Jimin still dashing away and quickened his pace instead.

 ---

The sports track was thankfully empty, bar a lone car parked up near the front gate.

“Jimin! Watch this!”

Glancing around to make sure there was no onlookers, he ran towards the gate, King once again racing alongside him. Just before he hit the fence, he came to an abrupt stop, and they both watched as King leapt over the barrier, leaving them both behind.

“Oh my god!” Jimin’s eyes widened and he broke into a grin, “That’s so awe-”

“Dangerous. That’s so dangerous”

Yoongi heard the cold tone in the person’s voice and snapped his head around, poised to challenge whoever was trying to ruin his mood.

Jeongguk and Taehyung stood side by side, grinning at Yoongi. Apollo excitedly bounded towards Yoongi, his tail wagging manically as he pulled on his leash.

“I’m kidding, that was so cool!” Taehyung beamed as he unclipped Apollo’s lead.

In response Yoongi simply rolled his eyes and muttered false threats, his annoyance rapidly fading. He would never admit that he couldn’t stay mad at any of his friends for very long.

They already knew that though, that his rages were vicious and scary but quick and short. And they also knew they needed Yoongi in their group. A person to fight when they could not; to speak out when they were left speechless.

They needed Yoongi, wolf and all.
