Day 1 - favorite character(s) (24/07)
Warden Momoko Hyakushiki sat at her desk in her office in Nanba Prison, reviewing the records of the Guard recommended for promotion to Deputy Supervisor. His name was Hajime Sugoroku, and his personnel file showed a stern, bald man who was her age, and who had graduated from the Academy a year after her.
His record showed him to be a competent officer who dealt out discipline fairly and efficiently, took only the minimum of personal time off, and who had had no successful escapes on his watch. In short, perhaps a bit less flamboyant than the other Deputy Supervisors already working at Nanba, but nothing that suggested anything out of the ordinary except for his efficiency in keeping prisoners inside, which was, after all, in the job description anyway.
She would always think back to this moment and wonder how she could have ever thought him to be so drably colorless.
“Guard Hajime Sugoroku has arrived,” Communications Officer Mitsuru Hitokoe’s voice announced through the speaker on Momoko’s phone.
She barked, “Acknowledged; send him up to my office and make sure he knows the security protocol.” She ended the call, set her cap on her head, then began setting out the new rank insignia for a Deputy Supervisor, as well as the paperwork the promotion would entail (transfer of quarters, office keys, and so forth).
All that was left to do was what she’d done several times before: greet the guard, perfunctorily shake hands, present the new rank insignia, and then hand over the paperwork to be submitted to the appropriate departments in Nanba.
As the door to her office swung open and she rose from her seat, any thought of a normal encounter went out the window as she realized how tall and strong and—after all, his uniform left almost nothing to the imagination. It curved over a broad, muscular chest, a trim waist, and his pants hinted at the muscle definition in his legs.
In short, the bald, stern, colorless Hajime Sugoroku had, in the space of a few seconds, morphed into a brilliant, scintillating vista of colorful pinks and reds as she mentally hopped and shouted, squeaking like a little girl as she thought, he is so amazingly hot and cool and—
But Hajime was speaking. “Warden? Is something wrong?”
Momoko tried not to collapse into a puddle at that voice.
She took a moment, shifted her stance slightly, and announced, “My apologies. I was momentarily distracted. A Warden’s job never ends, unfortunately. You have been promoted to Deputy Supervisor, and that entails formally presenting your new rank insignia, briefly reviewing your new duties, followed by some paperwork for you to sign, after which you can proceed to your new quarters. Any questions?”
Please say yes in that amazing voice of yooooouuuurrrs.
“No, Warden.”
Momoko’s inner fangirl slumped in defeat.
But, she still had to give him his rank pins.
Momoko’s inner fangirl gyrated in delight as she turned bodily to her desk, hiding her slightly shaking hands as she picked up the small box with the Deputy Supervisor insignia.
Control, Momoko reminded herself. She gripped the box firmly and turned back around, her voice flat and level. “On this occasion, Deputy Supervisor Hajime Sugoroku, I am pleased to present you with the symbols of your new rank.”
And so saying, she held out the box, not daring to hope—
His gloved fingers touched hers for a fraction of second as he accepted it.
If souls ascended, hers was already speeding on its way to who knew where as her vision festooned Hajime with red hearts and a flower-laden pathway to a bed in the distance.
As reality returned, Momoko shifted ever-so-slightly on the balls of her feet as she coughed, masking her catching her breath again.
She had to get him out of there.
She looked at her watch, appearing shocked. “Deputy Supervisor, I have an urgent matter to attend to and I’m afraid I’ve taken a bit longer than necessary and won’t have time to review your duties today. Please start on this paperwork immediately; you can use the common lounge in the Staff Quarters.” Momoko then all but shoved the paperwork at Hajime, who accepted it with equanimity, then bowed at the usual angle of respect for a superior officer.
“Warden, I will begin at once.” Hajime turned around and walked out of the room, apparently heedless of the fact that the Warden’s eyes were locked to a very particular part of his anatomy the entire way.
As the door clicked shut, Momoko leaned against her desk and let out the tiniest of squeals as she buried her face in her hands. He really does have an amazing butt!
And an amazing everything else, too! squealed her inner fangirl.
Hajime Sugoroku was certainly not going to be another unmemorable officer at Nanba Prison.
