Screaming Take Cover

Summary:

Kim Taehyung is the worst influence, Jimin decides, as he sits on the one bed in the nurse's office, awkwardly trying not to make eye contact with the boy sitting on the other end of the bed. The boy he hit sliding down a hill on a lunch tray. God, Jimin was a mess.

Or ; Jimin and Taehyung have senioritis, and Taehyung convinces Jimin to do something stupid that ends up with him hurting both himself and awkward, fumbling sophomore Jungkook.

Notes:

Based on this tumblr post: "Person B tries sledding down the grassy hill behind their school on a lunch tray. They end up eating dirt on the way down and trip Person A. They talk a bit while getting patched up."

cause why tf not

(also i still have two and a half weeks before my senior year starts, but senioritis is definitely already a thing.)

title is originally a lyric from the song Take Cover by All Time Low but the word screaming was singing but screaming made more sense for this ((i'm emo trash fight me))

((also i wouldn't have found out about bts if i wasn't so emo bc crankthatfrank is my emo dad and he made a reacting to bts video like two and a half months ago and well here i am))

Work Text:

Did Jimin know the idea was stupid? Of course he did. Did that stop him from doing it? Obviously not, seeing as Taehyung and 'no ball'-ed him, and he wasn't ever one to back down from a challenge! Add on the fact that it was four months into his senior year, and he wasn’t that great of a student before senioritis kicked in, anyway, it seemed like a great idea.

So that’s how he found himself at the top of the grassy hill in the court yard of school during lunch. Getting an empty lunch tray served to be slightly harder than either him or Taehyunng had expected, but they had done it, and now were preparing the best plan of action to slide down the hill. “This is going to be great,” Taehyung said, his phone in hand, ready to capture it all for Snapchat.

Taehyung was more popular than Jimin, but chose to hang out with Jimin rather than the ‘popular’ group, because they had been friends for so long. Taehyung was funny, talented, and definitely good looking, so it wasn’t hard for him to be popular. Jimin was all of those things too, but wore glasses, and was definitely more awkward than Taehyung was, which is why he wasn’t quite as popular. However, he had a feeling that the video of him doing what he was about to do would definitely gain him a bit of ‘street-cred’ before graduation happened.

“Hope I don’t die,” Jimin joked, setting the tray facing the right side of the school building.

Taehyung laughed, pushing his shoulder slightly. “Don’t be so dramatic, Jiminnie, you’ll be fine. Besides, if you’re not, even more people will think the video is hilarious. Could even go viral.”

Yes, because that’s exactly what Jimin wanted. A video of him sliding down a hill on a school lunch tray, eating dirt and hurting himself to go viral. “Great.” He replied sarcastically. “I don’t even know how I’m going to do this.”

Taehyung rolled his eyes, “Just sit down on the tray, princess, and I’ll push you.”

Jimin turned around, offended by being called princess, and slapped Taehyung on the arm. The boy wasn’t hurt, and just laughed, pushing him away. “Don’t be mean to me, Tae, I’m older than you!”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever, hyung. Just get on the tray!” Taehyung insisted.

Jimin glanced at the hill one last time. It looked a lot steeper on this side, and he was a bit worried that he wasn’t going to make it down all the way actually staying on the tray. But Taehyung’s excitement was infectious, and so he crouched down, sitting on the tray. He grabbed the ends of it lightly, not wanting his fingers to get stuck underneath it, as he pulled his knees into his chest as tight as he could. He was lucky he was so short, seeing as he was able to fit mostly on the tray. “Okay,” He said firmly, trying to calm his beating heart.

“You ready?” Taehyung asked, placing one hand on Jimin’s back, the other gripping his phone, ready to record.

“Yep!” Jimin replied, taking one more deep breath.

Taehyung pushed him harder than he was expecting, and Jimin lurched forward with a screech. The tray was moving way faster than he was expecting, the side of the hill seeming steeper while on a school lunch tray. He made it about ¾ of the way down the hill before his fingers got stuck underside the tray. He yelped in pain, pulling his hands up, and in turn making him lose balance as the tray had no way to stay underneath him anymore. He screeched again as he face planted in the dirt, and rolled down a little further. He heard another squeak that did not come from his mouth, and then suddenly he was hitting into something hard, and there was a weight landing on him as he slid a little further down the hill before coming to a stop.

He could hear Taehyung’s hysterical laughter over his groan, and the groan of whatever he had hit. His hands and face were throbbing, and he wasn’t sure what state whatever—or whoever—he hit was. They rolled off of Jimin, allowing Jimin to roll over too, feeling a warm wetness roll down his face and knowing instantly it was blood. “What the fuck, man?” A voice whined, as Jimin sat up.

Laying on the ground next to him with a bloody nose and a scratched forehead was a boy he had never seen before. He was pretty, though, under all the blood. He looked like he was a few years younger than him, and definitely wasn’t happy about being hit by some senior on a lunch tray. “Sorry?” Jimin offered, going up to rub his nose and realizing that his nose probably wasn’t the only thing bleeding.

Taehyung was in front of them suddenly, face red from laughing, but now looking concerned, “Damn, Jimin, you hit hard!” He then glanced at the boy laying on the ground, looking scandalized still. “Oh my god, you hit hard too!”

The boy sat up slowly, “What the fuck, man?” He repeated.

“I’m sorry!” Jimin said, again, not knowing what else to say.

Taehyung reached a hand out to both of them, “Come on, I’ll take you guy’s to the nurse’s. Before you get blood everywhere… or I guess, more… everywhere, than it already is.”

Jimin huffed angrily, but took Taehyung’s hand anyway. “This is your fault.” He told Taehyung.

The other boy was still in shock or something, having not said more than the eight words to the other two. He took Taehyung’s hand, heaving himself off of the ground with a wince. “Dang, man, I didn’t think Jimin hit you that hard!” Taehyung exclaimed, as he glanced at his hand that was covered in a little bit of blood too.

“Yeah, well, he did.” The boy said angrily, but let Taehyung and Jimin lead him into the school.

“I’m really sorry,” Jimin tried to apologize again.

The boy glared at him, “So you’ve said.”

Taehyung laughed, “I like him, Jiminnie! You choose a good one to hit,”

The boy wanted to be mad, but Taehyung’s personality was contagious. It was hard to be upset when you were around him, and his laugh was so cute that it was hard to stay mad. At Taehyung at least, the boy was still 100% mad at Jimin who hit him while sliding down the hill on a fucking tray.

The boys reached the nurse’s office as the bell rang, “I don’t want to get in trouble, so I’ll see you guys later!” Taehyung said, running off in the other direction.

Jimin glanced at the other boy, who he still didn’t know the name of, as they entered the nurse’s office.

There was an instant gasp as both boys entered, and the nurse—someone by the name of Kim Seokjin—saw the state the two boys were in, “What happened?” He exclaimed, leading them back into the one room the nurse had, sitting them both on the bed.

“I—” Jimin tried to explain, but was cut off.

“He was sliding down the hill outside on a lunch tray, ate dirt, and tripped me on his way down!” The boy explained, upset, and crossing his arms over his chest, face and hand throbbing too.

“You did what?” Seokjin turned toward Jimin.

Jimin bowed his head, “I’m sorry, Taehyung convinced me it would be a good idea. I didn’t think I was going to lose control and hurt anyone else.”

Seokjin sighed, grabbing some wound-cleanser and some cotton balls. “Senioritis is going to be the death of me each year, I swear.” Seokjin muttered under his breath as he pushed Jimin’s head up to start cleaning the scratches on his forehead and cheekbones.

Jimin’s nose had stopped bleeding, and after the scratches were clean and the blood wiped off of his face, he looked a lot less awful. Seokjin placed a small bandaid on the cut that ran through his forehead, before sliding over to the other boy. “That’s a nasty cut you got there, Jungkook.” Seokjin said, giving Jimin a name for the boy.

Jungkook sighed exasperatedly, “Yeah, I think I hit a rock or something on the way down. It all happened so quickly,”

Jimin winced as Jungkook took a sharp intake of breath as Seokjin cleaned the gash on his cheekbone and wiped his own nosebleed away. “You won’t need stitches, which is good, but I want you to make sure you keep it clean, alright? No makeup or anything for a little while.”

Jungkook nodded and Seokjin grabbed both his and Jimin’s hands to clean out the dirt and gravel from their palms. He sighed, “Next time you want to slide down a hill, try and not biff it halfway down, okay?” He asked Jimin pointedly, as he turned his hands over to clean off his knuckles that had grazed the ground and started the entire thing.

“Yes, sir,” Jimin nodded, making Seokjin laugh.

“Alright,” He said, sliding back in his wheely chair, looking at the two boys, “I think you’re both good now. But I’m going to grab you both a small painkiller to help with the pain and some water. I’ll be right back.” He stood up, leaving them to sit in awkward silence.

Finally, unable to stand it any longer, Jimin turned to Jungkook. “I’m Jimin, the awkward senior with senioritis who listens to Kim Taehyung when he really shouldn’t, and has a tendency to drag other people down with him.” He tried to joke, but the truth under it all had a bit too much gritty irony.

Jungkook sighed, not being able to find it in him to be mad at the older boy any longer, “I’m Jungkook, the also awkward sophomore who has a tendency to get dragged into things I really don’t want to be dragged into. But at least this time the person was cute,” He shook Jimin’s hand, smiling at the small blush that covered Jimin’s cheeks.

“Yeah, I got pretty lucky to drag down someone cute, too. I guess fate was on my side this time, huh?” Jimin grinned, and it was Jungkook’s turn to blush.

“Yeah, I guess I really fell for you,” Jungkook joked, grinning too.

Jimin laughed harder than he should have, tears leaking a little, while Jungkook just stared at him in utter fondness. Jimin was pretty, like… really pretty, and he was even prettier when he was laughing.

Seokjin came back in with some painkillers and water, “Here you go,” He said handing the bottles of water to the two boys.

They thanked him, and after taking the pills, they grabbed their bags and headed toward the door, “Wait, Jimin,” Seokjin stopped them.

Jimin stopped, turning toward the nurse, “Did Taehyung at least get a good video of you falling?” He asked.

Jimin grinned, “I sure hope so.”

(And if the video of Jimin literally hitting Jungkook while rolling down a hill did end up circling all of the school twitter’s and facebook’s for a good week, he can’t say it wasn’t worth it, as Taehyung had arranged for it to play at his and Jungkook’s wedding almost nine years later. Watching the video with fond tears in his eyes, Jungkook leaned over to his now husband, “Yeah, I definitely fell hard for you.”)
