Work Text:
Phoenix loved having sleepovers at Miles’s house, especially when it was just the two of them! He liked hanging out with Larry, but he was really loud and would always fall asleep early. But when it was just him and Miles? They’d stay up for hours just talking and laughing. Of course, they could never stay up too late, because then Miles would be afraid of waking up after 9.
Tonight, though, it was different. It wasn’t late, but it wasn’t early either. It was definitely too early to go to bed, though! Unless you were Larry, but Miles wasn’t Larry. Miles was Miles! That’s why Phoenix was so confused, because Miles hadn’t said anything in a long time, and he was pretty still on his side of the couch. It was dark in the living room, except for the glare of the TV, so Phoenix couldn’t tell if Miles was asleep or not.
Well, Phoenix wasn’t going to sit there and not find out! He crawled to the other side of the couch.
“Miles?” he whispered. “Are you awake?”
Phoenix waited for a second, but got no response. He furrowed his eyebrows in frustration and leaned over his friend. Hmm…yeah, his eyes were closed. Phoenix sat back and gave Miles a small nudge. The grey-haired boy groaned a bit, but made no move to actually wake up.
“Oh, come on, Miles!” Phoenix grumbled, before giving the other boy another nudge, this time a bit harder. “Wake up, wake up, wake up!”
Miles finally opened his eyes, and swatted Phoenix’s hands away.
“I’m awake,” his yawned, “I promise.”
Phoenix wasn’t convinced.
“Then why weren’t you responding until just now?”
Miles took a second to respond. “I was…watching the movie very intently.”
Phoenix raised an eyebrow and turned his head towards the TV. The movie, some Disney movie about a little orange kitten in New York, hadn’t been that interesting. Phoenix couldn’t really see Miles liking it all that much, let alone being so entertained by it that he ignored his best friend.
“Doesn’t your dad tell you to never lie?” Phoenix asked.
Miles just yawed in response and crossed his arms. Phoenix chuckled and slid off the couch to turn on the lights. He winced at the sudden brightness.
“If you wanted to go to bed, Miles, you could have told me.”
“You never want to go to bed early,” Miles said quickly to defend himself.
Phoenix shrugged and walked over to the TV to turn it off.
“Yeah, but if you’re tired, then I’m not gonna force you to stay up just so you can talk to me!” Phoenix paused. “But I do like talking to you…”
“That’s why I didn’t say anything,” Miles grumbled, his face turning red ever so slightly.
“I thought you didn’t say anything because you were asleep,” Phoenix snickered.
Miles shot Phoenix a tired glare, which just made Phoenix laugh more.
“Come on, let’s go to bed!”
Phoenix held out his hand, which Miles begrudgingly took. Phoenix stifled another laugh at how bright red his friend’s face was turning.
“I don’t need you to escort me to my room.”
“But you took my hand anyway.”
Miles shrugged. “You offered.”
Phoenix couldn’t argue with that, and led Miles to the bathroom so they could quickly brush their teeth. After that, they went into Miles’s bedroom. This time, Miles led Phoenix. This time, it was Phoenix’s turn to blush bright red.
“It’s only fair,” Miles reasoned.
They walked into the bedroom. Miles climbed onto his bed, which was just big enough for two people to sleep on comfortably. Miles looked over at Phoenix and raised an eyebrow.
“What are you waiting for, Phoenix, a special invitation?”
Phoenix laughed and shook his head.
“No, sorry! Just waiting for you to get comfortable.”
Miles smiled a bit and made gestured to the spot next to him. Phoenix turned off the light and crawled into the bed next to Miles. They only shared a bed when it was just the two of them. Larry would probably complain about being the only one on of the floor, and they both would just rather not deal with that. Phoenix got under the covers and snuggled down into the bed. He really loved Miles’s bed; it was so soft and comfy! He looked over at Miles, who was pulled the red comforter over himself.
“I really love your bed, Miles. It’s a lot softer than mine.”
Miles snorted, “I know. Your bed is a hard as rock.”
Phoenix shrugged slightly. “We can’t all afford the most expensive beds.”
Miles frowned, afraid he might have hurt his friend. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-“
Phoenix rolled his eyes and put his hand over Miles’s mouth.
“I know what you mean, Miles, jeez,” he yawned. “You always get so scared that you might hurt my feelings. It takes a lot more than a comment about my bed to make me sad!” Phoenix took his hand away, and scooted closer to Miles. “Now, go to sleep!”
Miles opened his mouth to say something else, but Phoenix cut him off by leaning in and pressing his lips to Miles’s forehead. Miles made a small, surprised noise that made Phoenix snicker. He drew back, amused by how red his friend’s face was yet again. Before Miles could say anything, Phoenix explained himself.
“My mom always kisses me on the forehead when it’s time for me to stop talking and sleep,” he said. “So now that I kissed you, that means you can only say ‘goodnight’ and sleep!”
Miles cocked an eyebrow, but said nothing. Instead, he leaned closer and kissed Phoenix on the forehead. Phoenix felt his cheeks heat up, just a tiny bit, and giggled a bit.
“Night, Miles,” he whispered.
“Good night, Phoenix.”
The two boys cuddled close together and fell asleep within a few minutes.
