Work Text:

If you were going to be completely honest, you had forgotten what the mission was about. Intel? Finding a target? A full-blown shakedown? You sat at the bar in the smoke-hazed room, swirling your drink. You had brought along Abbacchio as your makeshift “date” for the mission, although neither of you were committed to the role.

The two of you had danced together, looking over each others’ shoulders and whispering in hushed voices into the other’s ear, trying to figure out who you were supposed to be looking for. Bruno was the one to suggest you two complete the mission, as you hadn’t really gone on anything alone together. You were good friends, enough to convincingly play a “will-they-won’t-they”-type of relationship to the average eye, but you weren’t committed to playing a full-on “dating” role.

Your mind wandered back to the mission at hand and you scanned the room once again, looking for potential suspects. Abbacchio was sitting next to you, sipping on a glass of wine; you had lost count of how many glasses he had downed (not that it truly mattered, of course. He could hold his own when he drank).

Catching a glimpse of a familiar purple-haired young man, your search came to a halt as you settled your eyes on him. Suit looking just barely too big for his frame, he fiddled with his cufflinks, looking far too uncomfortable being here. Clicking your tongue, you patted Abbacchio on the shoulder and muttered a hushed “I’ll be right back”.

“Do you see the target?” He turned to look where you were going. You blocked his gaze before he could see your target.

“No, just an old friend,” you replied. Abbacchio hummed and turned back to his glass, watching your reflection in the stained mirror above the bar. Weaving through the crowd of dancers, you made your way over to the wall Doppio was leaning against. He paid no mind to you, favoring looking over the sea of people that littered the bar.

“Why would the boss send me to such a crowded place…,” he grumbled. You reached out and gently touched his hand, earning a small yelp from him. “Hey—!”

“Hey,” you grinned. He smiled back at you, albeit a bit shy. “What are you doing here?”

“Bruno r-reported your mission to the boss and h-he sent me for backup!” Backup. That was it, yeah. Doppio gulped, knowing the boss just honestly wanted him to keep an eye on you. “The target’s a dangerous person, you know…”

You rolled your eyes. “I can handle my own. Plus Abbacchio’s here with me.”

“I— he knows, but he just wanted to be sure,” he tugged at his sleeves a little. “Your safety’s important, y’know? A-Abbacchio’s too!”

You gave him a warm smile, and touched his hand again to discourage him from fiddling with his barely-oversized suit anymore. Faint clapping brought you back to reality and you looked over your shoulder at the band on stage. They were starting another song. A slurred ‘one, two, three, four’ came from the singer’s mouth,

“Do you want to dance with me?” You turned back to Doppio and his cheeks flared up, but he nodded. You laced your fingers in his and lead him to the dancefloor, settling yourselves between some couples. When you turned back to him, he took your right hand in his left, and placed his own right hand on the small of your back. Your free hand gripped onto his shoulder, and the two of you began swaying in time with the music.

Her eyes invite you to approach,

and it seems as though those lumps in your throat

that you just swallowed have got you goin’…

“C’mon c’mon c’mon…” you mumbled to the song and rested your chin on Doppio’s shoulder. His eyes fluttered shut and he gently rested his head against yours while you swayed and turned in a circle. You could feel his heartbeat thrumming against his chest, and you could feel his palm slick with sweat in your hand. You smirked to yourself.

“This outfit looks stunning on you,” he spoke up. It was your turn for your cheeks to flush, and you pulled away from resting on his shoulder to look at your clothes.

“Thank you,” you pouted a little and turned your attention to his gaze. His left iris was black, and it seemed like the light was hitting it weird. “I found it on my bed this morning. It just seems so expensive…”

“You deserve the best,” Doppio’s brows furrowed. “It was a gift from the boss, you know.”

You grimaced a little. “I don’t deserve something with such a high price tag like this probably had, gift from the boss or otherwise.”

Your rhythm faltered.

“Wait a moment, this was a gift from the boss?” You tilted your head.

It’s not like I’m falling in love, I just want you to do me no good

and you look like you could.

It was Doppio’s turn to lose step with the song. “O-oh! Uh, that…you weren’t supposed to know that, it was supposed to be a…secret…” He scrunched his eyes up and when he opened them again, they were both back to their usual golden color.

“I’m not supposed to know a lot of things,” you retorted, leaning forward to press a chaste kiss to his cheek. “I also don’t think I should be fraternizing with someone so high up in Passione.”

“But I want you to be,” he murmured in your ear, getting you both back into the flow of the music. “And the boss hasn’t put a stop to it, so…”

You shrugged and let those words sit in the back of your head. He was right; the boss hadn’t stopped the two of you from being together, and while you wouldn’t go so far as to say the boss liked you as a person, he certainly tolerated you enough. Doppio made a small noise to get your attention, and you looked back into his eyes. He leaned forward and, for a moment, you thought he was going to kiss you; however, he rested his forehead against yours and let your noses rub. Your eyes fluttered shut once again, and you let everything wash over you. His palms were still a tad sweaty— had you noticed his cologne earlier?— his breathing is uneven, is he really this nervous?—

Before you knew it, there was a gentle hand on the back of your shoulder. You stopped swaying and turned, facing Abbacchio. Doppio’s expression turned into one you couldn’t read. Abbacchio sent him a look; not necessarily a glare, but it wasn’t overtly friendly. “Bruno called me. We got a false lead. Let’s go, we can try again tomorrow.”

“Alright,” you dropped your gaze to the floor. “Just let me say goodbye.”

“I’ll have the car waiting out front.”

With that, you watched Abbacchio walk away, and then you turned to Doppio. His black iris was back. “I’m sorry…”

“No, no! Don’t apologize,” he took your hands in his. “I had fun, this was nice. You’re a good dancer.”

“All we did was sway and turn,” you snorted. Doppio grinned at your laugh.

“Yeah, but you’re good at that.”

There was a brief pause, and you looked into each others’ eyes. Finally, you were the one to break the silence.

“Do you… do you want to go dancing with me some time? For real?” You gave him a shy half-smile, and a small shrug. His smile only grew in response.

“Of course, I’d love to!” His smile dropped a little. “But…you should probably get going. I’m sure the boss doesn’t want Abbacchio wondering too much as to who you’re spending your evening with… the others can see you’re ignoring your date…”

You bit the inside of your cheeks. “Yeah… probably.”

Before he let you go, Doppio shut his eyes and brought both of your hands up to his lips, pressing a long kiss to your knuckles. Your heart skipped a beat in your chest and your stomach did a small flip. When he opened his eyes to meet your gaze once more, both of his eyes were black.

“Ciao, tesoro mio. I’ll see you in the upcoming days. Count on it,” he whispered. You nodded in response, and began walking backwards toward the exit, not letting go of his hands until your arms were stretched and your fingertips fell apart. Walking away, you glanced back over your shoulder at him; there was something ominous and imposing about his aura as he stood still while the dancers around him finished.

You looked forward to seeing him again.
