Cutie

Summary:

Maya sadly couldn't hang with Nick for the day, but hey, Ema isn't a bad substitute.

Work Text:

Maya impatiently tapped her foot as she waited in front of the Wright Anything Agency door. Not that she was in a hurry, just that she really wanted to see Nick again! Like, she hasn’t seen him in weeks! At least, not since Sorin and Ellen’s wedding. Her cousin Pearl was standing next to her, with a more reserved stance, calmly waiting for someone to open the door.

“They’re probably out doing something.” said Pearl.

“Without me? Yeah, that’s not happening.” retorted Maya.

“We should probably come back later…” before Pearl could continue, Maya was already banging the door again.

“Nick!! I know you’re in there!!” she yelled. Almost on cue, a girl in a magician's outfit opened the door.

“Sorry about that guys,” said Trucy, “had to take care of Charly first. You know he takes priority over everything!” Pearl ran over to hug her best friend. Maya smiled. She always loved seeing Pearl excited.

“Where’s your dad Trucy?” she asked.

“He and Athena are working on a case right now. I don’t think they’ll be back for a while.” explained Trucy without letting Pearl go.

Maya pouted and crossed her arms. “Well that stinks! Might as well go home then…”

“Sorry about that,” said Trucy, “have a good day!”

“Take care of Pearly for me,” Maya replied, “have fun “being friends” and “hanging out”.” She winked at Pearl when she said that. Pearl gave her a confused look, but she ignored it and hugged Maya goodbye.

“Hmph! Go on an investigation without me huh?” Maya complained to herself as she left the building.

“Just go on and not tell me? And he went with Athena!? I’m being replaced! I mean, I love Athena, she’s great, but she’s taking my job! What, just cause she’s “a lawyer”, she’s better to take on investigations than me? Nick, you flipping goofball!” she went on this tirade for at least another ten minutes.

“... It’s not like the Steel Samurai would ever abandon the Pink Princess! The two are inseparable! Just like me and Nick! I’m probably over exaggerating this. I don’t care! I wish I cou-”

“Maya?”

Maya froze and turned to who said her name. It was a woman slightly taller than her with long brown hair that had a messy bun on top. She was wearing a lab coat and a green vest. She was kinda cute too.

“Oh! Ema!” jumped Maya.

“I thought that rambling was you,” said Ema approaching her, “how are you?”

“Oh! I-I-PHH! I’m great! How about you sister??” Maya usually isn’t this flustered around people but dangit Ema was cute as heck!! I mean I guess she has a crush on her? Maybe? I dunno, she just likes talking to her. And looking at her too I guess.

“Eh. Been kinda busy today,” Ema grumbled, pulling out her bag of Snackaroos, “the prosecutor I’m working with is kinda pushy, and the case we’re working on is really complicated.”

“Is Nick working on this case?” chimed Maya with a hopeful look in her eye.

“No, don’t think so. If he did, he would have asked for my help at this point.” said Ema, munching on a Snackaroo.

“Shoot,” pouted Maya, “oh well. Might as well head to the station…”She peaked at Ema to see if she’d say anything. You know, like “oh let me join you” or “I’ll tag along with you”. She seemed really focused on her Snackaroos though.

“Y-you wanna come along?” Maya asked. Ema stared at her blankly for a second and then said,

“Yeah sure!” Nailed it.

They walked around the city for a while, catching up on their lives and talking about whatever. Maya talked about her training and how intense it was. She was pretty much done with her training, so she has more time to hang out in the city with the Wright Anything Agency gang! Ema talked a lot about science mumbo jumbo. Maya had no idea what she was talking about, but it sounded cool! Plus, Ema was so passionate whenever she talked about it! She had that spark in her eye whenever she talked about forensics and fingerprints and stuff! Maya could listen to her gush all day. Cute, AND super cool to talk to! She liked this girl!

At one point, Ema pulled out her phone and groaned.

“It’s the prosecutor I’m working with. He’s reminding me of all the crap I have to do before the trial tomorrow.” she said bitterly.

“Sounds tiring.” said Maya, hoping to add to the conversation.

“It’s actually not that bad,” replied Ema, “I just… don’t like this guy in particular. I almost miss Prosecutor Sahdmahdi at this point.”

“Well he did get better after that huge trial in Kurah’in.” mentioned Maya.

“Yeah, but now he and Apollo are gonna be there for a really long time, so I can’t work with them!” complained Ema.

“True,” added Maya, “I mean, I’m gonna miss Apollo, but it’s awesome to see him take charge of his own firm!”

“Agreed,” said Ema, “can you believe I used to have a crush on him?”

This stopped Maya right in her tracks. She pulled Ema’s arm and yelled,

“YOU WHAT!?”

“But like, I don’t feel that way ANYMORE,” stuttered Ema, “l-look, I was going through a lot of emotions around the time I met him!”

“I NEED to hear more about this! ASAP!” Maya urged.

“I-it was more a self exploratory thing?” Ema sputtered. Maya LOVED watching Ema try to explain herself.

“I mean it’s… well… I kinda defaulted to him to convince myself I…” Ema could barely get a sentence out she was so flustered.

“Convince yourself what?” asked Maya. NOW she was curious…

“W-well it’s just the kind of people I’m attracted to I guess…” explained Ema.

“Oh, so you're gay!” chirped Maya.

“Yes! N-no! Maybe. Kinda?” spouted Ema.

“Hey, it’s cool if you are,” clarified Maya, “I’m gay! Well, half gay. I’m bisexual.” Admittedly, Maya liked girls more than boys. They’re a lot cuter and less likely to be stupid. Though, she can’t help but find some boys pretty attractive. Why not have both?

“See, I’m kind of the same way.” Ema said. Maya’s ears perked up.

“But honestly? I don’t really care about what gender anyone is or whatever. I’ve never really dated anyone so I have no basis to go off of other than appearance. If I consider you attractive and you’re not a jerk, that’s all I need really.” Ema clarified.

Now Maya was motivated. She can totally like girls! Especially cute ones who aren’t jerks, like her! Time to initiate Operation: Flirtfest!

“Woah, you mean you’ve never dated anyone!?” I blurted out.

“Nah. Never really found anyone, you know?” replied Ema.

“But you’re really attractive,” Maya elaborated, “has nobody at least hit on you?”

“Oh, plenty of times,” Ema perked up, “several guys at the agency have asked me out, and each time I’ve said no.”

“Dang! Hard to get!” quipped Maya.

“Nah, they’ve all been either obnoxious or overly anxious around me.” clarified Ema.

“Still, you’re feisty! I like that!” chirped Maya, lightly punching Ema in the arm. Ema raised her eyebrow as Maya giggled like a little schoolgirl. You know, at this point she’d be annoyed that Maya was pretty clearly flirting with her. Maya thinks she’s being coy about it but nah, she’s definitely flirting. Still, she’s not annoyed. Actually, she’s a little endeared by it. Something about the way Maya constantly tries to be buddy buddy with her made her smile. Maybe even laugh a little. Ema let out a quiet snicker reacting to Maya’s advances.

“What’s so funny?” asked Maya.

“Psh. It’s nothing.” Ema smirked.

They reached the station and waited for the next bus to Kurain. Ema started talking about more science babble, but Maya found it hard to concentrate. It didn’t really cross her mind that she could totally ask Ema out. Like, right now. What’s stopping her? Nothing! That’s what! But eh… Does she really want to do this? I mean Ema’s cute and all, but does she want to start a possible relationship this instant? Unfortunately for Maya, Ema notices right away how uneasy she feels.

“Everything okay Maya?” asked Ema.

“Oh yeah, everything’s fine,” Maya replied confidently, “just thinking about some stuff is all!”

“What stuff?” asked Ema.

“Ya know! St-stuff…” Maya prayed that Ema would stop pressing her.

“What’s with the vague wording?” Ema pressed further.

Before Maya could make another vague reply, the bus finally arrived.

“Oh! My bus is here! Thanks for the talk Ema!” blurted Maya.

“Hey, no problem,” grinned Ema, “I had a good time talking to you! Bye Maya!”

“See ya, cutie!” shouted Maya.

Wait.

Ema was completely thrown off. She looked at Maya with a shocked look on her face and a light blush. She wasn’t nearly as red as Maya though, who was more red as a tomato and had her hands clasped on her mouth and looked absolutely terrified. She darted inside the bus and couldn’t even bring herself to look at Ema again.

“Uuuuuggghhhh what did I just do!?” Maya muttered to herself as she sat down and the bus took off. There go her chances with Ema…

… Ema stood at the station for a while. She should probably be pissed that Maya just called her a cutie but honestly? She felt… kinda flattered? I mean she didn’t do much different others have tried on her before. Except maybe be more charming and cute. She’s definitely more attractive than the guys she’s had to deal with.

Ema felt her phone vibrate and she pulled it out. Another text from the prosecutor. Apparently she needs to report back to the crime scene for more investigating. Ema sighed and made her way back. She thought a lot about Maya. Something about that girl made her feel excited about life. Just as much as her love for forensics. And being called cutie by her?

Ema laughed. Maybe there’s more to her than she initially thought.
