Chapter 1: Mission (Im)possible

Chapter Text

“Tae, I have mission for you. Come to my office in ten.”

Taehyung sat up slowly and groaned, looking blearily at his phone and shut the annoying, bright thing off once he finished reading it. He lazily walked out of his office, feet heavy as if walking in waters. Dark aura loomed over him, alongside with his much darker circle around his eyes. He’s a spy (arguably the best in his ‘company’) and he image to take care of but a yawn that escaped from his mouth reminds him that he’s also human, and humans need rest. Needless to say, he really enjoys being a spy because it is what he is really good at, but sometimes it took a toll in his mind and body that he needs to cocoon himself away and reconsider his career as a farmer far from the buzzing city of Seoul. But then, he would always come back to this workplace (if that is what normal people say) for the fire has been burning passionately in him.

Caught up in his own mind, he realized that he has reached his destination; Kim Namjoon’s office. Namjoon is his friend who happens to be his boss and sometimes his voice of reason when it comes to making decision. Taehyung swore to never tell anybody but he do admit that Namjoon is kind of his role model since he was the one that recruited him into this company and trained him on how to use words instead of fist when everything goes south. He knocked on the door several times before a little voice replies, a sign for him to come in. He pushed the door and saw a familiar figure, frowning at a file that seemed to be a brief explanation of something important.

“What’s up, hyung?” Taehyung walked towards the sitting man, who was still reading the file in his hands but aware of him coming closer.

A brief moment passed. Namjoon finally looked up and meet his eyes with Taehyung. Still not letting go of the paper, he smiled at the younger boy and says, “Wait for Jungkook. He’s coming back from another mission.”

Taehyung nodded and he waited again, foot tapping on the floor out of habit.

“Jungkook? Who is he?” Taehyung asked and Namjoon just smiled.

“You’ll see, my boy. You’ll see.”

Just as expected, Taehyung heard a soft knock from behind him and heard Namjoon’s approval to come in. The door creaked open, revealing a young man his age with mahogany hair, big and round eyes, peach pink pouty lips, and a hint of red on his cheeks to complete his handsome features. He wears all black that worked very well in blending with the background but fails to hide his sculpted body that Taehyung may or may not be jealous of. He walked with confident towards Namjoon, steps light and fast but not too fast as if eager to reach the destination, but rather at pace that everybody in his room knows he is there and ready to bring justice to the world. He then greeted Namjoon with a little bow and smiled politely at him.

“How’s the mission in Tel Aviv?”

“Great, hyung! Never thought I could be back here in less than a week, but here I am,” the man replied enthusiastically. Taehyung noticed the bunny teeth this man has when he smiled, which reminded him of an innocent kid. He wondered how a man with a child-like smile and a child-like face has a chiseled body that seemed to have grown prior to his face and it does not make sense scientifically. The child-faced hunk lowered his gaze to the file Namjoon has been holding, and continued, “Seems like you have another mission for me, hyung.”

“Ah, yes Jungkook. Shall we get started then?” Namjoon now stands up and gave the copied files to each of them. Namjoon then started their briefing by giving some basic information of the bad guy Taehyung and Jungkook has to spy on. He looked at a picture, studying the profile of his target; Im Youngsun. He was currently residing in the rich suburbs area; it is his empire with all his trophy wives and fortune stored, not to mention he was often seen in this house the most. Taehyung then noticed the second picture which shows a ring with customized red stone, a symbol that he was part of “White Fins”, a highly popular gang that could annihilate the nation’s economy and peace. He continued to read, eyes darting from left to right as he saw Jungkook reading the file more intensely than before, Taehyung is intrigued on what causes the other man full of confidence, now looking flustered and confused.

“Task 01: Espionage.

Find information about the drugs, illegal artilleries, and assets; source, quantity, location, and purpose.”

Okay, that was easy, Taehyung thought. Nothing to be surprised of, right?

Wrong.

He flips to the next page, only to find his new identity side by side with Jungkook’s and a certificate marriage with his and Jungkook’s name enlisted with intricate handwriting on the paper. Panic begins to crawl on his skin as what the realization has dawn to him. Before he could even protest, the bunny boy opens his mouth faster than him.

“Hyung! What do you mean we have to work together and be married for this mission? I could just do it by myself, hyung!” He complains with a bewildered stare, boring into Namjoon’s forehead. “I don’t need a partner. I will be fine by my own just like my other mission,” he continued.

Offended, Taehyung scoffs at him and rolls his eyes dramatically. He glares at Jungkook and mentally adding to his list that this hunk is also an arrogant bitch that needs no help from anyone. Taehyung probably does not see how the other works on-site, but his gut says that both of their skills are on par with each other, if not, one are slightly (slightly) better than the other. This does not mean that he needs a partner, but he prefers to work alone, much like the mushroom headed boy said, he prefers to not partner up with anyone, especially Jeon Jungkook (as what the file written as his unfortunate husband). Taehyung steps forward and tries to compromise with Namjoon but it was all in vain.

“Tae, you know it’s futile to change my decision with techniques I taught you. So no, you won’t give me that puppy eyes either and suck it up,” Namjoon presses, eyes unwavering from Jungkook’s. Namjoon moves slowly, bends down and leaning on his table with such force that Jungkook averted his gaze, suddenly regretting his earlier complain. Taehyung bites his smirk as the so-called manly and confident man beside him easily getting tamed by none other than Kim Namjoon. He was (very) impressed that Kim Seokjin was the only guy who can mend Namjoon to such unimaginable extent; you would not believe that Namjoon would cross-dress if Seokjin was the one who asked for it. “And as for you Jungkook,” Namjoon pressed every word painfully slow, “you need to stop whining. You’re twenty, not twelve.”

Jungkook pouted and huffed, then crossed his arms. Taehyung snickered at the sight and Jungkook whipped his head to the right, glaring at him.

“What?” He snapped, his face turned to a frown.

“Oh, nothing. Just wondering how a twelve year-old could be a spy,” Taehyung sneered, obviously tainting Jungkook’s pride. He knows that he hits a home run once the frown on his baby face ten times darker than before.

“I can’t believe I am going to be paired up with you for this long ass mission. God, what luck! I really sympathize with your future significant other, having to babysit and dealing with your petty ass all the time. Sad being an ideal couple is out of reach for you,” Jungkook retaliated, taking a step closer to Taehyung.

“First of all, I am clearly not the one who whines like a little bitch just now to Namjoon hyung. Second of all, you must be goddamn blind when you think I am problematic. With that attitude, the only person who’s gonna love you is your mom, honey,” Taehyung replied coolly, pushing one finger on Jungkook’s chest, signifying him to back off. A smirk now prominent on his lips after he saw the other heaved a deep breath and losing his temper. Jungkook opened his mouth, but a bang from the table cut him off.

“I don’t want to see unnecessary bloodshed in my office and I definitely do not want to see body bags consist of you two because of this stupid quarrel. I did not send my two greatest spies to beat each other and get your asses studying the damn file!” Namjoon raised his voice, holding his head as if their quarrel brings him a headache (it is). He changed his gaze from Taehyung to Jungkook and back again to ensure that they shut it and no longer attempting to obliterate each other. He then relaxed, and leans on his chair. “You have eighteen hours to memorize all of this.”

Both agent groaned and reluctantly re-read the file once they are out of the office.

-

Taehyung slammed his head to the table once he and Jimin are seated in a not-too-fancy Korean restaurant. Jimin has this uncanny ability that he obtained from the perks of being Kim Taehyung’s best friend for almost seven years. It is called “Taetae’s stress level” where sighing is the lowest and slamming his face unto every flat place nearby is the highest. Jimin smiles, eyes turning into a small and soft crescent and cute, crooked teeth emerge from his pink lips. After deciding that his best friend has been face planting for too long now and it is attracting some customers’ attention (and concern), he finally nudges softly at Taehyung’s shoulder and a grunt replies his gesture.

“Are you done talking to the spirit trapped inside this table? ‘Cause the family beside us are one digit away from calling an exorcist, Tae,” Jimin leans closer and patting Taehyung’s walnut crown. Taehyung finally looks up and Jimin swears that he could hear the relieved sigh of the said concerned family beside him.  Taehyung sighs and then hides his face into both of his hand. “Come on. Don’t be a dramatic queen, Tae. I am not a psychic, tell me,” he presses, getting impatient. Taehyung whines incoherently like a three-year-old and Jimin rolls his eyes. “And by tell me, I meant clearly, idiot.”

And so, the depressed bean that also happens to be Park Jimin’s best friend spills out about his mission task and Jimin cuts him off by shooting his hand to his mouth, reminding him that they are in a public place and revealing such information could jeopardize his mission. One must be careful hence only heaven knows if there is an assassin right around them, much less this restaurant they are eating right now.

After dragging Taehyung’s depressed ass and a few complaints from Jimin about how heavy he weights and “please, use your legs” grumbles they finally made it back to the institute and sits in the lounge. Jimin asks again of what happened to his friend, and Taehyung told everything with a strained and liveless voice. Jimin listened intently and nodded once in a while to show that he is listening to every single word Taehyung says.

“So, what’s wrong with this mission? You just got to be a fake husband for this Jungkook guy, right?” Jimin asks as Taehyung finishes telling his problem.

“No, you don’t understand, Chim. He’s like the epitome of asshole who thinks that the universe exist and revolves just for him,” Taehyung moans, dramatically sinking into the sofa further.

“Taehyung, give him a chance. Maybe he’s not like this,” Jimin tries to reason. He is a man who holds unto the phrase “do not judge others” intimately, which is a good thing and a good reminder for Taehyung as his mental right now is unstable. Taehyung sighs and reluctantly agrees with Jimin only to silence him. They then bid goodbye as the time tells their breaks has ended and Jimin (as a good friend and a fellow spy) do not forget to send his good luck to his best friend for his mission.

“Happy marriage, Tae! Maybe Jungkook is really the one for you,” Jimin patted his back with a mocking gesture but purely with affection, earning him a slap in the back of the head. He ended up giggling while Taehyung reflected on reasons he is fated to have such an asshole friend like Park Jimin (nevertheless, he’s thankful).

Taehyung bid his friend goodbye and let out a long sigh, memorizing information for the big day, the day he does not look forward to. Upon this rather peculiar mission, he wished that he does not have the need to put a bullet in his beloved husband’s brainless head just for him to shut up. He does not enjoy the task of cleaning the house, especially when there is blood involved. He finished memorizing his file when the sky is decorated with little stars and a hidden moon in the clouds. With that, Taehyung drifted to sleep to the lullaby of soothing silence and darkness.
