Chapter Text
“Attention please, this is your captain speaking_ we will arrive at our destination shortly. Please, buckle up for a comfortable landing, thank you”, as the speakerphone turned off, I woke up from a deep sleep.
I don’t know for how long I slept but I don’t care. Where I am going is nowhere near joy land and I don’t mean literally. It’s an island in the middle of the ocean. There’s also a small village where some people catch fish and sell. I was told that the coastal area has the best quantity and quality of fish. That’s what my father told me so that I would agree to go to college there. Why would he think that that’s so important is beyond me? Not to mention the island’s name is Triton.
Weird name for an island, isn’t it?
I put on my seat belt and waited for the plane to land. I put away all my things in my bag. My phone, check, my mp3 player…. I’ll listen to some songs on the way. I put headphones in my ear and listen to Justin Beiber’s “I’m sorry” song while I look through my window on my right. I see water sparkling in the sunlight and a small island.
Triton...
That’s a name I have to get used to. As I stare at the window, I see my reflection and notice a boy about my age stare directly at me. I wait for him to look away but he didn’t…. what the hell is his problem. Five minutes passed and he’s still just staring… that’s it! I turn my head and look directly at him.
Instead of feeling ashamed and flustered, he smiles at me. It got me by surprise, or better yet shocked, in a way that the only thing that came in to my mind was: “He looks adorable!” He has light-brown hair and full-sleeved red shirt. His hair is cut like mine_ textured bowl hair cut with undercut.
I quickly look away. What the heck is wrong with me? I shake my head and shrugged away the awkward feeling. Just forget about it_ probably better to ignore him.
An air hostess speaks through the microphone, “Attention please, we are about to land so please stay in your seats and put on your seat belts, thank you!”
As the plane lands, it shakes and quakes. The plane finally stops and everyone gets out of their seats to get their bags and leave. A headphone in one ear, I take out my bag and head towards the nearest door.
“Thank you and have a good day”, the flight attendant sees off the passengers, waving me and others goodbye. I wave her goodbye too and step outside. I am immediately welcomed by a cool wind; I can tell that it’s the sweet-scent of the sea.
I go down the small steps and get in to a bus with the other passengers. A baby starts crying loudly in his mother’s arm. So noisy, I wrinkle my nose. While others nearer to the baby looked irritated and angry. Suddenly, the same boy gets up from his seat to sit next to the mother. He smiles at her and the baby.
“Excuse me, madam, you don’t mind me playing with your baby?” he asks politely.
The woman smiles back, taken by his manner and charm (I doubt he has any manners though), “Yes, you may, but I don’t know if he’ll play”
He takes the baby from her and sits him on his lap. The child, looking confused, stops crying and looks at him. After a while, the baby starts laughing as the boy makes funny faces at him, though it’s not just the baby but everyone in the bus looks delighted, especially the ones who first looked irritated before, are now giggling. He does one more aegyo and I find myself smirking like crazy. Stop it!
We finally made it to the terminal. Everyone gets off and walk towards the front door, me included. Although, before that I look towards the boy who gives back the mother’s child. He waved them goodbye and walked towards the terminal.
I don’t know what to think about that guy, only that he’s kind of cool. As I wait for a taxi, someone taps me on the shoulder. I turn my head. And find the boy six inches away from me. I step back a little.
“Excuse me; are you also looking for a taxi?” he asks casually. He does this really well.
“Yeah, do you want a taxi too?” I ask politely.
He smiles sweetly (he’s really good looking), “Yup, I do but I don’t think there are any taxi around here.”
“Really, how do you know?” I ask and look around. There are only few cars, maybe some relatives who came to pick up some of their families and friend from the airport but other than that there aren’t any cars or taxi around.
“Hey! Want to catch a ride with that guy.” He points at an old man, wearing a simple dark blue half-sleeved shirt and denim jeans with a straw hat. He also has a tan skin.
“Uhhh, I don’t think that’s a good idea, I mean we barely know him” I become skeptical in asking people any favor.
“Why not_ He looks kind to me. Come on!” he approaches the old man with the pickup truck.
I hesitate and look around again. Everyone has already left so the place looks as if it’s an abandon terminal. I look to my left and right and see nothing but unending road. In front of me is the ocean.
I look back at the grey pickup truck. I see both of them talking. The old man is already smiling and laughing. Him too huh, he’s really good with people. The boy looks back at me and points towards me. The elderly gestures me to come to him. Oh well, it’s better than staying here alone.
“It’s an old pickup truck but she’s been with me for years_ don’t have the heart to sell it away though, my grandson says otherwise”, he cackles lightly.
“I like it, and it seems she can handle anything”, as I come closer to them, I pick up some of their conversations. “By the way, my name is Teahyung, what’s your name mister?”
“Oh it’s Hyeon but y’all can call me grandpa or granddad, whatever. I live near town, on the third district_ really easy to find my house. It’s the only one with a red-tiled roof_ I have a grandson who’s older than you two. You will enjoy his company. He’s more of a child than a grownup.” He laughs coherently.
“I hope you don’t mind”, I said apologetically.
“Nonsense, I would love to have more kids around_ brightens my day.
Now hop on_ and don’t stand while I’m driving!” He opens the car door and gets behind the wheels.
“You didn’t tell me your name, boy”, he asks before closing the door.
“Oh, my name’s Jungkook, sir”, I answer while I hoist myself behind the pickup truck.
“No need to call me sir, kid_ call me grandpa”
I smile at him. He’s really nice, I like him.
“Ok, grandpa”
