Work Text:
Christmas Eve came, and so did the Agency’s annual Christmas party. All of them didn’t even have to celebrate the holiday to have fun and exchange gifts. But this year was a special year, it was Chuuya’s first Christmas outside of the Mafia and as the newest member of the Armed Detective Agency. He was more nervous that he should have been, despite how close they had all gotten in the last nearly a year. He spent the last month and a half worrying over what gifts to buy, dragging Dazai all over the city. At the end of the day Dazai simply signed his name on each of the cards when his partner wasn’t looking.
Christmas in the Port Mafia had surprisingly been a lot tamer. It was mostly a time to relax, drink, and eat. But the Agency liked to celebrate everything and he was still sticking to his promise to stay sober, even when Dazai wasn’t. At least now he thought that someone had to drive, and it wasn’t ever going to be Dazai, despite the fact that he was now free of casts and slings. He could barely move the completely bandaged fingers on his right hand but he still took the opportunity to wave his hand around whenever he could.
Kyouka and Atsushi spent an entire week decorating the office, with occasional help from the man who could easily climb onto the ceiling to hang decorations and add the star to the top of the tree nestled into the corner by the window. At one point, while distracted by taping up a decorating, Chuuya suddenly fell from the ceiling. His ability was suddenly nullified by the grinning trickster who had caught him with his two free arms. He barely had time to be angry before he was set on the ground and a kiss was placed on his forehead.
The party itself was lively. Everyone enjoyed music, food, and possibly spiked eggnog (save for Chuuya who avoided it just in case), and a large pile of brightly wrapped gifts sat under the tree. Chuuya sat on the couch, Dazai’s bandaged arm wrapped around his shoulder. At this point the Agency had already gotten used to their relationship, already past the point of teasing and now it was simply normal. It was refreshing for the both of them.
By the time they opened presents most of the Agency was slightly tipsy. The whole office felt warmer and lighter. Dazai spent the entire time giggling and hanging off of Chuuya as he tried to pass out the gifts he had only just found out were from the both of them. A large majority of gifts ended up being holiday assortments of chocolate and not a single person objected. Gift sets and baskets were a favorite from the members of the Agency, being cheap and easy. The recipients were too drunk to complain anyway.
Chuuya sighed with relief after finding out that no one really spent too much time with their gifts, thinking it silly how much time he worried. Everyone enjoyed their gifts, especially Kyouka who gained a new stuffed animal to add to her collection. Even Kunikida cried over his gift, but only because he had gotten very drunk off one glass of egg nog he didn’t know was spiked. Chuuya had found more of his favorite notebook and packaged them alongside some fancy pens. Yosano spent the rest of the night cradling a bottle of wine that Chuuya had pulled from his untouched collection especially for her.
Unsurprisingly most of the gifts they received were for the both of them, some embarrassingly so. Only Chuuya was sober enough to be embarrassed by a variety of “couple’s first Christmas” gifts. Dazai, however, was very pleased. Kyouka handmade a decoration that Chuuya proudly displayed in his living room when they finally made it home. Dazai had already half eaten a box of chocolates before they even made it out the door at the end of the night.
When the night was finally over most everyone was either mostly sober or even more drunk thank before. Dazai being among the latter. The least drunk of the lot called cabs for the rest as they said their goodbyes and packed away their gifts. Chuuya carried Dazai bridal style as he carried bags down to the car. He was red in the face as the others stifled laughter until they made it out of range. He was lamenting his sobriety as Dazai mumbled into his shoulder.
Halfway through the drive home Dazai stated that he had a special gift he couldn’t wait for Chuuya to open on Christmas. His devilish grin made Chuuya’s blush as he subconsciously drove faster. He also had a special gift for his partner, but that, too, would have to wait.
