Work Text:

it was Christmas eve and all through the house, not a soul was stirring, not even a mouse. the reason being that there wasn’t a house to begin with. it was an apartment building, where jeon jungkook lived and it was quite alive. there were multiple drunk college kids who didn’t have a home to go to being loud. and they were all in the same room.

jungkook hates the noise.

he wasn’t a homebody per se but, he would enjoy a nice quiet evening for a holiday. it was christmas eve, and usually it’s a time of quite conversations with loved ones, with the occasional politics disagreement, of course.

jungkook just assumed that’s what a normal christmas would be like. he had never experienced christmas with relatives coming over and seeing old cousins. because jungkook never had the chance to have that.

he’s been an orphan since he was 5, and had no relatives to take care of him. so all of his christmases were spent in group homes, in between houses, or sometimes just with his social worker. some may find the life jeon jungkook tragic, yet he believed it was anything but.

sure, multiple christmases without presents would probably upset many kids, but jungkook was never a materialistic person. he appreciates the small things.

he loves the smell of wet asphalt after it rains, the way a brisk breeze feels on a fall afternoon, and the feeling of warmth a cup of hot cocoa brings.

jungkook was easy to please, despite his past. minimalism is a good way to put it. yeah. jeon jungkook was a minimalist.

so, the one time jungkook wants something, why can’t he have it? he just wants his christmas eve to be quite. he wants to be able to read without being interrupted. he wants to dive into the life of someone else and forget his own, but he can’t really do that when his neighbors are being loud.

he had no other option, he had to confront his neighbors. he’ll be damned if the noisy neighbors distract him from the life of harry potter.

the amount of times jungkook rehearses what he’s gonna say in his head is quite a lot. how hard could it be to ask his neighbor nicely to “please keep the noise down”

finally, he gathered up the courage and knocked on the door. when the door opened did not expect the man to be fucking beautiful.

this was not his neighbor he knew that, but damn was this man pretty. the only reason he knew that this guy wasn’t his neighbor was because he’s seen his neighbor’s hair, it was currently blonde.

this guy had chestnut hair, had full lips, and was tall with broad shoulders. this man could literally be a model. jungkook wouldn’t be surprised if he already was one.

jungkook heard the voice of who he assumed actually lives in the apartment, and a little relief washed over him. he’s not good at talking to attractive people. god bless the dude who was about to talk to him instead.

that’s what he was thinking, until he saw him. what the fuck, is everyone in this apartment gorgeous? that’s not fair. jungkook was adding this to his top ten anime betrayals by god himself.

“hi, so i know this might sound a little rude, uh, could you guys maybe keep the noise down? it’s kinda distracting me from my reading,” jungkook finally managed to stutter out after mentally cursing himself for being awkward around hot people.

the hot guy that actually lived here™️ looked a little confused but didn’t miss a beat with his response
“oh, sorry, we didn’t think anyone else would be here. y’know with it being christmas eve and all, we assumed everyone would be back home.” he replied. “i’m yoongi, by the way.” he slightly smiled at jungkook.

and to that jungkook nodded. it made a lot of sense. of course they thought that no one else would be in the building, it’s christmas eve. people are usually in their hometowns with loved ones, or in a tropical place because they don’t like the cold. jungkook didn’t really fit into either of those categories, and that was okay to him.

“i’m jungkook” is all he replied.

and after the confrontation, jungkook turned on his heal and started his five step journey back to his own apartment. well, that was his plan until he heard yoongi’s voice, which brought him to an abrupt stop.

“if you don’t have anywhere to be tonight, would you like to come in? we don’t have much, but we do have cake.” yoongi said again with that cute smile of his. and jungkook had to think. would be rather delve into the world of harry potter for the sixth time, or would he have actual human interaction for once on a holiday. and he decided.

jungkook let out a breath “yeah. i’d like that.” he smiled.

so jungkook went inside and was met with 5 more people—that’s included the hot guy that could totally be a model—and they all smiled at him. it was like even though he was apart of their group, they wanted him to be there.

jungkook learned a lot about his neighbor, and his friends. for one thing, he got all their names and was put into their groupchat. he fit right in, as if he was a missing puzzle piece that they’d been looking for. jungkook took a liking to every single one of them, yoongi especially.

yoongi was the one that he got off best with. he was comfortable to be around, really funny, and he made a good host. and so jungkook vowed to himself to become great friends with yoongi. because this man was just shy of perfect, and jungkook was a perfectionist after all.

and that was the start of something beautiful.

it was the start of late nights drinking warm cups of whatever because yoongi prefers coffee but jungkook is more a tea and hot cocoa person. it was the start of always being at one apartment and doing small things together. small things like watching movies with a 10% rating on rotten tomatoes and wondering how a movie is so bad that it’s actually good.

but those small things meant the world to jungkook. the stolen small glances. the way sometimes he’d zone out, and he’d find yoongi snapping him back to reality with thoughts with a gummy smile on his face, ready to tease him for being so spaced.

eventually yoongi was one of those small things. because he meant the world to jungkook, and if you’d ask jungkook if he would do anything different, he might say yes for one reason. he would’ve knocked on that damn door earlier because he had no idea the life he was missing out on.

that christmas, jungkook got the best present that he didn’t ask for because he didn’t know he needed it. he got min yoongi’s presence as a present, and that was the only thing he’d ever want from then on.
