Chapter Text
The common room of class 1-A buzzed in excitement. Today would be the day that they would find out if the two top stars of their class finally got their provisional license. After weeks of continuous and bruising training, today would be the day that decided their fate. Yes, they could still get the licenses a month later, but it would be a huge blow to their egos if that happened, so here was class 1-A worrying over the results.
"If Bakugou doesn't get the provisional license today, he is going to be ultra pissed." Kaminari said from his spot on the couch. A cord dangled from the corner of his mouth as he charged Jirou's phone.
"Oh god, I don't want to even imagine what Bakugou's going to be like if he doesn't pass." Sero groaned at the thought.
Momo pouted from her spot on the floor as Tooru braided her hair. "I really hope Todoroki passes as well. I'd hate to see him crushed about not passing."
"Can that boy even feel emotions?" Mina added. She didn't mean anything rude of it, the boy was just so stoic and blunt that it was hard to tell what he was feeling. Before Mina could add even more, a wooden spoon whacked across her head. The pink-skinned girl groaned and grabbed the back of her head in pain. Everyone looked to see who the culprit was, expecting Sato since he was the one that cooked, but their eyes fell on you! You seemed to be cooking with Sato, unless you were just wearing an apron and carrying around a wooden spoon for fun.
"Why?!" Mina complained while rubbing her head.
You huffed and crossed your arms. "You were the closest one so I just used you to get everyone's attention. But look guys, have some faith in them okay? They're our top two students for a reason!" You reasoned. "If by some chance they don't pass, then we'll just go with the flow. Whatever they need, we'll get for them. You catch my drift?" You asked, using your infamous "go with the flow" catchphrase that you learned in America.
The girls of class 1A couldn't help but smile at you, your relaxed nature easily getting to them. "Yeah she's right!" Uraraka exclaimed. "Even though he's a complete butt, Bakugou is a really good hero."
"Ribbit. And Todoroki got in through recommendations, so I don't see why he can't pass. Ribbit." Tsuyu explained.
Slowly but surely the rest of the class nodded along to the girl's arguments, everyone agreeing that they'd help the boys in any way they could if they somehow failed. You turned to walk back to the kitchen, happy with the results, when someone called your name.
"Hey (L/N)!" Kaminari yelled out as he yanked the cord out of his mouth, much to Jirou's dismay. "I'm sure I speak for everyone, but you and Kirishima are probably the only ones that can "comfort" Bakugou if he fails." Other kids in the class nodded in agreement with his statement.
"Why do you say that?" You asked, raising an eyebrow.
The electric blond raised an eyebrow right back at you. "Because you two are the only one's that can talk to Bakugou without him trying to explode your face off."
You tilted your head to the side in confusion. "Really? I thought he hated me."
"WHAT?! Why would you say that?! No one could hate you (Y/N)-chan!" Mina whined, hugging your side despite the wooden spoon attack from earlier.
"Because my quirk is the exact opposite of his, duh. Fire and water don't mix well Mina." You explained. While Bakugou could fire off explosion from his palms to use for defense, offense, and mobility, you had the ability to manipulate the water around you to do all of those things. As a result, the two of you never got along in training, even if it was supposed to be beneficial to you two. Prying the pink girl off of your side, you walked back into the kitchen to help put the icing on the second layer of the cake you and Sato were making.
The class moved into their own conversations, which ranged from school, internships, and memes while you and Sato worked in silence as the two of you finished the cake that you had been working on for the last two hours. Sato had just finished writing the last letter on the cake in icing when the door to the common room jiggled, alerting everyone that the two boys of the day were back.
Without a second thought, you dropped the icing bag you were holding and ran into the common room, anticipation eating away at you. Despite your constant reminders to "go with the flow" you couldn't help but be a little anxious for your classmates. The door creaked open and in walked Todoroki with Bakugou at his heels. Everyone watched them with wide eyes, waiting for the result.
Todoroki blinked at them all, obviously confused at their behavior.
"So?!" Kirishima asked. "Did you pass?!" A smile tugged at the bi-colored haired boy and without a moments hesitation, he reached into his bag and presented a small card with his hero information. The class erupted into cheers for the boy. They were so excited for Todoroki that they all almost forgot about the angry blond.
"Wait, guys don't forget about Bakugou!" You exclaimed, motioning towards the blond to show them.
Bakugou rolled his eyes at his classmates antics, but reached into his bag and pulled out a license of his own. The class erupted into louder cheers than before, many of them standing up to congratulate the students. You were so excited that you ran up to the first boy and tackled him with a strong hug. Todoroki grunted from the sudden force that launched itself onto him.
You pulled back with a wide grin on her face. "I'm so happy for you Todoroki!" You cheered, bouncing on the balls of your feet.
Todoroki nodded his head, that small smile still on his lips. "Thank you (L/N)."
You nodded, your (h/c) hair falling in front of your face, before turning on your heel to find the other boy you were happy for, only to find no one. You whirled around trying to locate the blond. Just as you were about to run to Kirishima and ask him where Bakugou went, your (e/c) eyes caught him near the hallway that lead to the elevator. He couldn't leave yet! Not before having at least a bite of the cake that you and Sato cooked for this occasion!
Quickly running up to the boy, you hugged onto his back, making the blond stiffen in shock or anger-you couldn't tell. You held onto your hands that sat against Bakugou's stomach to keep him from escaping too easily. He looked over his shoulder and scowled at you. "What do you think you're doing Fish Breather?"
You pouted at the horrible nickname that he chose for you. "You know you could give me something cute like you have for Kaminari. Discount Pikachu is way better than Fish Breather." You complained.
"Is that all? If so let go of me Fish Breather." He demanded, still using the nickname he used for you.
"Well, I wanted to congratulate you on getting your provisional license! You worked really hard for it! Plus I'm sure more people want to congratulate you." You exclaimed, smiling up at him. Bakugou turned his head around, no longer looking at you. You pouted again. He obviously didn't understand that you wanted him to stay down here, so standing up on your toes, you whispered into his ear, "We also have cake so you should stay down here."
You knew it was most likely futile, but trying never hurt. you pulled back from the blond, who hadn't moved from his position. His hands were clenched in fists and his head hung low. You furrowed your eyebrows in worry. Was he okay? You were about to reach out to him when the boy suddenly turned on his heel and started for the kitchen.
"What flavors the cake Fishy?" He asked, not looking back.
You lit up like a christmas tree when he asked this. He was staying! "It's a vanilla and chocolate two layer cake." Bakugou stopped suddenly and turned his head lightly.
"Why is it that specific?" He asked, clearly confused why someone would make a cake like that.
You shrugged. "Sato and I wanted to make sure everyone enjoyed it, and who doesn't like vanilla or chocolate?"
Bakugou rolled his eyes and continued to walk back into the common room, but instead of walking into the kitchen he was grabbed by Kirshima and Kaminari who began to bombard him with questions and congratulations alike.
Mina slid up to you who watched with an amused smile. "So when's the wedding?" She joked.
You jumped a bit at her accusation. "Mina!" You hissed. "Don't say that so loudly!" Mina and the other girls in class 1A were the only ones that knew of your...crush on Bakugou. It was a feeling that developed just before the provisional exam that nearly cost you your own license. You later admitted it to the girls that same night when they were huddled in Momo's room for their weekly sleepover. Least to say, the girls were hysterical over this information.
Mina only stuck her tongue out at you as Sato sat the cake down on the table in the dining portion of the common room. Class 1-A's celebration lasted far into the night, the students only going to bed because Aizawa was yelling at them for partying at 2 in the morning. The following week continued as usual, classes, training, and internships.
Well internships for everyone but Bakugou and Todoroki. At the end of the week, you noticed that Bakugou had still not gone to any hero agencies yet. This shocked you as this was... well Bakugou! He had so many offers by so many hero agencies after the sports festival that it no sense he hadn't gone to one for an internship.
You sighed as you slung your bag over your shoulder, getting ready for the fifteen minute train ride to your internship. Despite it being the end of the week, the hero you were working with, the fourth best hero: Bubblegum, wanted to go over some files for a case he was given earlier that week for a drug ring. Entering the elevator, you sent a quick text to Bubblegum.
To: Bubble Boi
Hey, I'm heading to the train station now. I'll be at the office in about 20 minutes.
The little ding above you alerted you that you were on the ground floor, so you stuffed your phone in your back pocket and briskly walked out of the elevator. Even though Bubblegum understood that you were still a student and couldn't do everything a sidekick could do, you didn't want to let him down, so you always offered to help him when you had a chance.
"Hey (L/N), where are you going?" Kaminari asked as you passed by the sofa. The rest of the "bakusqaud" as they called themselves had taken over the TV and were watching Sharknado. Probably Kaminari and Sero's choice knowing them. Even Bakugou was there, sitting on the floor next to Kirishima with a bowl of popcorn in his lap.
"I offered to help Bubblegum look over some case files." You explained while waving a lazy hand in the air.
"Aww, on a Friday?" Mina whined, leaning her head on the back of the sofa to look at you "You should just tell him you can't come and watch the movie with us!"
You chuckled and shook your head. "Sorry, can't Mina. I made a promise."
A soft buzzing noise filled the room, alerting them that someone was being called. That someone was you. You hummed as you grabbed your phone from your back pocket and looked at the caller ID.
"Bubble Boi is calling"
You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion. Why was Bubblgum calling? Nevertheless, you answered the call, bringing the phone up to your ear. "Hey Bubblegum what's up? Everything okay?"
Bubblegum hummed. "Yup don't worry. I just remembered that you had class with that explosive boy from the sports festival um, what was his name again?"
"Bakugou Katsuki?" You asked, earning the group's attention. Bakugou actually turned around, albeit he was glaring at you even though you just mentioned his name.
"Yeah yeah! Him! I was wondering if you could bring him over!" Bubblegum exclaimed.
You glanced over to said blond with a confused expression before turning your back on the group. "Not to be rude sir but why?"
"Why" what Fishy?!" Bakugou yelled from his spot on the floor. You waved a hand behind your back to tell him to be quiet.
"Because I think he'd be a good intern," Bubblegum answered. "He has this personality and energy I think this laid-back agency could use. I also believe that yours and his quirks can work well together."
You shook your head. "I'm sorry Bubblegum, but I don't think that'll work out. Yeah, he has an... explosive personality to say the least-"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT FISH BREATHER?!" Bakugou yelled.
"I'm sure you can hear him though the phone. He's quite rude. And regarding the quirks... they don't mesh well. Neither do our personalities! I don't think having him at the internship would be beneficial for anyone." You muttered. Yeah, you liked Bakugou, but you weren't going to give him special treatment! Bubblegum's agency would be terrible for Bakugou to work at. Everyone there had a levelhead and went with the whole "go with the flow" vibe that you embodied while Bakugou was just all "die, die, die".
The line was silent for a moment, making you worry, but before you could say something Bubblegum spoke up. "(Y/N) I understand that you want to make sure he goes to the right agency and protect what our agency has right now, but I want Bakugou Katsuki to come over here with you. Now. There is no compromising." He explained in a stern voice. You stiffened. You hadn't heard this tone of voice from Bubblegum since the raid back in America. "Best Jeanist told me how much potential he has and I want to see him myself. I think he and the agency can benefit from his internship here. See you when you get here." And with that Bubblegum hung up, leaving you in more than just shock.
You had to bring Bakugou to your internship?! Other than Bakugou not meshing well with the atmosphere of the sidekicks and hero in charge, everyone there was going to tell him a bunch of embarrassing stories about you! Bubblegum was basically your dad at this point, so all the sidekicks there were the brothers and sisters you never had. You were not ready for them to embarrass you for life.
You took a deep breath before turning on your heel to face the "bakusquad". "Bakugou, Bubblegum wants you at his agency." You said bluntly.
"Hah?" Bakugou furrowed his eyebrows in anger. "That pink guy who can create literal bubbles of gum? Yeah, cause I wanna go to his fucking agency."
"Bakugou. He insists." You stated further, putting emphasis on the last word. The blond raised an eyebrow at you before breaking.
"Fine I'll go." He said, standing up and walking towards the door where his shoes sat.
The Bakusquad gaped at the two of you as you got ready to go. "Wait, Bakubro, you're just going to go?!" Kirshima exclaimed, clearly surprised by his friend's actions.
Bakugou shrugged. "I don't have an agency yet so I might as well fucking go. Plus Sharknado is a shitty movie, so have fun with that you damn nerds." And with that Bakugou walked outside, leaving you alone with the Bakusquad.
"Sorry about that guys." And with that you left too, the door closing with a snap.
-One Week Later-
Here the three of you were, on top of an abandoned factory's roof. You peeked over the side out of curiosity only to be pulled back by Bubblegum. "They could see you Siren, be careful." Your cheeks flushed in embarrassment of your rookie mistake, but you stayed silent and nodded. Bubblegum looked between the two interns before him. "Okay look you two, I need you guys to work together as much as you can for this mission. Watch each other's backs, and try not to get anything injected into you. I don't want something to happen to you guys on my watch."
You nodded while Bakugou crossed his arms with a bored expression. "Yeah, yeah. So when are you going in?" He asked, clearly wanting to run in and bash some heads in.
You let out an exasperated sigh. "Learn to wait, idiot!" You scolded.
Bakugou growled. "Who are you calling an idiot? I'm less idiotic than you with your fucking basic costume! How does that even help you use your damn quirk Fish Breather?"
"It helps me because it's so simple Bakugou! My quirk is limited by my stamina, which is quite high mind you, and the water in the area. A costume isn't going to help raise either those things." You explained angrily. As a young hero, you were rather happy with your simple costume. It was two-piecece, skin tight suit. Your legs were all covered, the left leg being a light blue and the right being black, while your midriff was exposed. The top of your costume was also half blue half black and covered your chest and extended to your face, where a mask covered your mouth and nose clearly to keep your identity hidden. The hexagonal pattern of the light blue and black costume allowed you more mobility in water while the boots you wore allowed you to jump and run farther distances because of springs laced within the sole of the boot. On top of this, you wore a cape-like accessory, except it wrapped around your waist where there was also a belt with basic medical supplies.
Bakugou scoffed at you, clearly unimpressed.
"Children." Bubblegum warned, gaining their attention. "We're starting soon, so don't fight." You sighed and looked out over the abandoned site while Bakugou stared at his feet with an angry expression, as if they had done him wrong.
Before any of you knew it, the signal to start was given, and the hero and two interns were off. Crashing through a window at the top floor, your foot connected with a henchman's head, effectively knocking him out. The other three henchmen on the same floor immediately ran to the source of the crash to find the teenage girl.
"What the hell are you supposed to be? A wannabe hero?" One of them growled. "She's all alone, so let's kill her!"
But before the three thugs could take another step forward, a familiar blond crashed through a window behind them and let out an array of explosions. Two of them were thrown back from the force of Bakugou's attack, but the one that ordered to kill you was still standing. He seemed to have some type of defense quirk- he let down his arms when the smoke began to clear, which had extended into long shields to cover the blasts.
Activating your quirk, you reached forward while a mass of water collected next to you. Within a second it created a huge arm that replicated your own and with a swift movement of your hand, you grabbed the guy and had him stuck in the fist of the water arm.
"Where's the main lab?" You asked, your voice strong as ever despite the mask.
"I'm not telling you anything bitch!" The guy spat.
You raised an eyebrow and tightened your fist, which in turn tightened the fist of the water arm. Bakugou stood there, a little shell-shocked. "When did she learn to do this?! It was as if it was another extension of her body! Like that one tentacle dude in class." Bakugou thought. The guy screaming in pain brought him back to reality.
"I'll ask one more time, where is it?" You ordered. Your eyes held a fury that Bakugou had never seen before. It was kind of hot if he was being honest with himself.
The thug thrashed around wildly as he tried to escape, but when you tightened your grip once again, he gave in. "Fine! It's in the second basement! You have findine the secret elevator in the back of the first basement of the building to get to it!" He cried out.
You smiled innocently and let the guy go, dropping him to the ground with a thud. "Thank you mister." You then turned to Bakugou. "I'll let you do the honors."
The blond smiled wickedly, making the thug shiver in fear. "Gladly." And with one punch, the guy was out cold. The pair of heroes-in-training continued this process of knocking the henchmen and thugs out one by one until they made it to the elevator of the first basement.
"Bubblegum, come in Bubblegum." You asked, holding onto your earpiece. Bakugou held onto his as well, listening in on the conversation.
"What is it Siren?" The hero asked, which was quickly followed by a crash.
"We're at the elevator that leads to the lab, should we proceed or wait for you guys?"
Bubblegum didn't answer for a second, the only sounds coming from their earpieces were yells, bangs, and utter chaos. Finally, he answered, "Go ahead but proceed with caution."
"Got it. Siren and Lord Explosion going in."
The two marched in together, just barely squeezing through the elevator door because of Bakugou's damn gauntlets. The elevator creaked and groaned as it descended, making you worry about your safety a little bit. Looking over, you were surprised to see how beat up Bakugou was. One of the thugs had snuck up behind him with some kind of stealth quirk and got a couple hits on Bakugou. As a result the boy was already forming bruises and even had a cut on his cheek. You didn't look any better though. A large bruise was starting to form on your side from being slammed into an old rusted desk, which you were pretty sure had multiple infections in it. Luckily the skin didn't break, so you wouldn't need shots.
The elevator stuttered to a stop, warning the teens of what possible enemies laid ahead. The doors slid open to reveal a pristine lab with white walls, cleaned desks, proper chemical tools, everything a scientist needed. It was a complete 360 from the condition upstairs. The only person in there was a tan male in a white lab coat. He whipped around in surprise, obviously not expecting anyone to find the lab.
You rushed forward first. "The place is surrounded! Do not resist and come with us!" You ordered, creating the water arm you did in the beginning. Bakugou launched himself out of the elevator after you with an angry scowl on his face.
The scientist didn't make a run for it, but he did get into a fighting stance. "Sorry kiddos, but I'm not going down without a fight." With incredible speed, the scientist rushed towards the two of you with outstretched hands. You dodged to the left while Bakugou dodged to the right. At first, it seemed the two of you dodged the man's attack, but while still in midair, the walls on either side of you and Bakugou opened up, an array of pumpkin-sized metal balls shooting out.
Your eyes widened. "BAKUGOU IT'S A TR-" But you couldn't finish your sentence as you were thrown across the room. One of the metal balls had collided with your shoulder, launching you into a table with a bunch of chemicals on it that was quickly demolished. Not even a second later Bakugou was hit as well, his body flying right towards the scientist who was smiling evilly.
You gasped as the scientist reached a hand out to touch Bakugou's forehead. With all the strength you had left, you ran towards the scientist, but the man seemed to know that you were going to do exactly that. Right as you were in reach, he connected all five of his fingers to yours and Bakugou's forehead. Within that split second, both of yours quirks activated suddenly as intense pain sliced through your bodies.
The last thing either of you remembered was screaming and a white flash.
