Chapter Text
She had been talking for at least 20 minutes about her boyfriend and how great he was. And even though you've heard it 100 times before you let her do it again anyways. Her little conversation didn't even need you in it, she just spoke to herself as she remembered all the small and sweet moments both of them had together. You nodded your head every time she looked at you to show her that you still listened. Just that it wasn't exactly true, because while she had been daydreaming you had been playing Pokémon.
Winning another battle you save your game and close your nintendo. Looking up to the curtains, which hid the late afternoon sun, you stand up and stretch from lying so long on her bed.
"Eunmi, I already know how much you love Sungchul. You don't have to tell me every second about it." "Yeah, but he-" "brought you roses and payed for everything and even gave you his coat and, shortly, was the most romantic boyfriend you ever had, I know. And you know that I love you to death but if you're gonna continue," you turned around to face her and smiled sweetly. "I'll hit you."
She mumbled a quiet "sorry" and turned in her chair. "I just love him so much."
The days had all been the same recently, going to school, spending time with Eunmi at her house and planning to go to the swimming pool but never actually doing it. It appeared to be hard to even move the smallest muscle in this mid-summer heat, especially when the sun peaked on lunch.
White walls surrounded you as you stood in the middle of the room. You've always admired Eunmis skill to decorate something and her room was speaking for itself. Deep blue curtains with a flowery pattern, dark wooden furniture, fitting gem stones on every shelf and pictures hanging on the wall with beautiful frames. Pictures of you both laughing like dorks, pictures of her and her family and pictures of Sungchul.
The growling in your stomach just now had you wondering. "Dude, I'm actually pretty fucking hungry. Do you have something to eat?"
Eunmi turned around to look at you again and shook her head.
"No, but my mom left me some money. We can order pizza if you want."
Just hearing the word made your mouth water. You nodded eagerly to which she laughed, having expected such an answer. "When was the last time you actually ate pizza?"
"I don't remember, like a month ago? But it tasted awful, wouldn't recommend it." You remembered the bitter taste of the weirdly combined food you brought since the internet said it tasted good, but if something's called "unicorn pizza" it probably doesn't.
Waking up to a grey van ceiling wasn't the most pleasant way to do so but many things you did today weren't pleasant. Like not showering for a long time until you've found a river of some sort. Or eating just enough from a can to not starve. Or washing away dirty blood from the only clothes you owned at the moment.
You rubbed your eyes and sat up to look at your brothers. Fortunately, you three were together when all of this started and have been a team ever since.
The road was bumpy today which was one of the reasons of your awakening. A look out of the window told you it was fall, leaves and branches covering the street.
"How are you feeling?" You heard Jins slightly worried voice. Sighing you shake your head. "Like shit. I miss sleeping in a real bed." He turned around in the passenger seat and smiled reassuringly at you. "We're going to find a city - and a house today, don't worry. In fact, we're close to Roran, should be only like an hour away now. Right, Yoongi?" The younger one nodded. "Hoseok lived in the outskirts, remember? So we're gonna check his house as well and see if there's anything useful in that area."
"Wait, Roran? Already? How long have we been driving?"
"For about 5 hours, you fell asleep right after we started driving. You must have been exhausted after getting us out of that herd."
"You bet I was, I still am tired. If that asshole hadn't surprised you like that..."
"It's fine now, I mean I'm still here. So is Yoongi. We got this. Together, don't forget that. It's just a small wound that's gonna heal in no time."
You leaned back into your seat and rubbed your eyes once more, cursing your body that robbed you from one of the most precious things you had now - sleep. The 5 hours you had of it just now wouldn't be enough for a long time if you remember how many hours you often had to stay up to not get caught.
"Do you think he's still alive?" The question was a bit risky but you decided to ask anyways.
You noticed how Yoongi gripped the wheel tighter.
"Fucking hope so, that punk was taught how to survive."
"Didn't he enlist before shit started going down?" Jin looked at him and received a nod as answer.
"His dad also taught him a thing or two. Then he taught me them afterwards."
You let out a small chuckle. "I remember when you used to play with him in the living room, mom always told you two to stop running."
Yoongi seemed to smile for a second before he looked pained. Jin had the same expression.
Slowly the feeling of guilt crept up your spine as you recalled the sight of the bite on mom's arm. Tired of seeing that image over and over again you decided to think about nothing and watch the messy streets again to distract yourself from it. But it was hard, your mother's voice always bringing you back to it and leaving you again.
Lost in thoughts you didn't even notice how Yoongi turned and drove in the middle of the town now.
Quickly coming to your senses you sit up.
"We're gonna check the old gas station. You should stay here and watch out for any infected. Haven't seen one in quite a while."
"You sure you don't need any help in there? I mean you're still wounded." Jin shot a quick look to his leg.
"We'll be fine, don't worry."
"Whatever you say." You got out of the car and felt for the gun under your shirt. "Just be quick"
The street didn't have many infected lying around and the blood stains coming from their heads seemed rather new. Turning around you looked into the windows of the buildings surrounding you. If this was a trap you would've been shot already, right? If some sort of sniper were to be on that roof you wouldn't have these thoughts, would you? No, you're just being paranoid. Maybe some people just drove through the town and shot them.
You walked over to a corpse and observed the wound. They didn't use a gun, they used a knife. Which means they had to stop here.
Shit, what if -
A noise came from the small shop your brothers entered earlier.
You ran after them and found yourself in front of a fallen shelf. Looking up you see Jin on the floor and Yoongi grabbing something on the other side of the room.
"You okay?" You stepped in between the shelf and Jin and helped him up. He nodded and put a can, probably from the fallen shelf, into his bag. "It's fine, don't worry."
"Yoongi, have you seen anyone? Maybe in the back?"
He shook his head and walked over to you.
"We should go now, though. We can pick up the rest tomorrow. My bag is full and now that the shelf fell..."
Jin and you both nodded and exited the shop.
You arrived at the house when the sun lowered itself on the horizon and disappeared for the night.
Yoongi held onto his gun as soon as he left the car. Looking at Jin doing the same you also pulled it out.
You three approached the door with Yoongi being the first and Jin in front of you. With the position of the last you had to cover their back, which wasn't necessary since the infected were lying around dead, just like in front of the shop. Quietly you whispered, "Jin, Yoongi, we should be careful. I think someone might hear us."
Both turned and shot you questioning looks. You nodded towards the bodies on the street.
"In front of the shop, their wounds were fresh. They seem to be here, too."
Yoongi silently sighed and turned to the door again to put his ear against it. He slowly opened it with his gun raised and entered the house with light steps. You followed Jin.
Noticing the blood stained stairs directly in front you, you ascended them with caution before you arrived in a hallway. The stains stopped here.
Cursing on the inside you tried to look for a hint for where they could lead to.
You turned your head to the opposite site and realized that some doors had been left open. Before you could do anything Yoongi walked over to one of them and signaled for you to check the room next to his. You nodded slightly and entered it when you saw an unmade bed. Losing yourself for a second you felt the need to touch it and as you did, you regretted it a moment later, the sound of a gun getting unarmed making you alarmed.
"Hands up, gun and bag on the floor."
