Chapter 1: A New Routine

Chapter Text

The first time Taehyung saw Jeon Jungkook he didn’t know the reason why he was going to point a gun at the boy.

It was early in the evening when Jungkook had left the campus of Hongik University and was heading home; at least Taehyung was expecting him to go back home so he was as subtle as possible as he followed the boy while he did his way, both hands holding tightly the straps of his backpack. Taehyung knew where he lived: it was the simplest information that was printed on the papers, just as simple as his full name. Obviously Taehyung wouldn’t waste time waiting for the boy to arrive home while he would have already positioned his gun in a safe hidden spot, having the possibility of Jungkook not going straight to his apartment after his classes had ended for the day. But luckily there was where he was going.

Earlier in the day Taehyung had been woken up by a phone call that ended before he could even think of answering it. He had sat upright on the bed and rubbed at his both eyes with the heels of his hands so roughly that he had seen stardust under his eyelids but they still seemed rather heavy and he couldn’t properly keep his eyes open. He had blinked several times to lessen the need to close them with the thought of curling himself up in a tight ball under the covers and go back to sleep, but he knew how important was that single call that he always wasn’t able to pick up.

As he had expected some minutes after the call his phone had rung once again, the screen lighting up to show that he had an unread message. Taehyung had let out a groan as he lifted his arms above his head to stretch his stiff body, not even trying to hold back a long yawn with his mouth fully open for he was alone in the bedroom, then one hand had gone up to scratch the back of his neck while the other grabbed the phone to finally read the message. He didn’t need to take a second glance at the device for he knew it would be a text as simple as possible, just four letters that he knew had been typed rather hastily and without the need to be looking at the keyboard to do so. And of course a period. Come.

Taehyung hadn't spent much of his time in cleaning himself. He had just lazily dragged his feet on the flooring as he reached the bathroom to take a quick shower in order to wake himself up; this and to cool down his body. It was the last week of May and the weather was starting to heat up, which resulted in him waking up most mornings drenched in sweat or close to that and so he couldn't leave the apartment until he had at least quickly washed his body. Because of that very short and cold message he had made himself fastened the process of washing the sods off his body, rather faster than what he usually did but that didn't really matter to him at the moment. When he had stepped out of the bathroom with the tower hugging his hips, he had felt his stomach rumbling but he didn't have the time to think about food, so he quickly dressed up and took a cab to go to the building he needed to be.

Maybe one hour or so later he had found himself glancing at the papers and pictures that were sprawled on the tabletop while he tapped his fingers on his thigh without a specific rhythm; maybe it was any random song that he had listened to on his way back home, maybe it was something he had just made up in his mind. Seokjin had handed him the folder with little to no talk as he always did and Taehyung hadn't make questions either, just a single one that he usually didn't need to but he had done so for he was rather surprised when he first glanced at a picture of the young man inside the folder.

"What for?"

Seokjin made a noise in confusion and cocked one eyebrow as if he wasn't exactly expecting the question and Taehyund did understand his reaction. He hardly ever made questions and none of this was his business; he was just there to get names, take their lives and receive his money at the end of it all.

"What?

"What did he do to piss off boss so much?"

Seokjin had thought that over for a moment before shrugging softly. "Just do your job, will you?" And then he had left the room after picking two other folders from the table and placing them in the crook of his elbow so he had his hand free to type anything that was his own concern in his phone.

Before leaving home Taehyung had made sure to check on the address he had been given just for the sake of it. He was good with information, always had had an easiness to memorize numbers, names and faces, and with that one would be no different. He wasn't planning on killing the boy that evening though; he hardly ever did so. Taehyung usually spent not much more than two days collecting a bit more of information of the person he was resigned to kill, checking on their routine just to make sure they would be at the place he wanted them to be and in the right time. Then he could kill them and get his payment for doing a good job.

When Jungkook turned on his left Taehyung waited ten seconds to do the same as he slowed his pace a bit, pretending to glance at the traffic if any pedestrian looked at him in a suspicious manner; not that they would anyway. He also wasn’t worried about Jungkook noticing him: the boy was much too distracted by whichever was the song he was listening to in his earphones and Taehyung was sure he could hear the younger humming some words along to it if he got close enough. Some minutes before Jungkook had stopped to get some take-out food, but that hadn’t taken him too long. Now Taehyung could easily spot the food bag being carried in the boy’s right hand while the other sometimes was held up as he did some strange gestures in the air while enjoying the song, and Taehyung could do nothing but scowl because the kid was just so fucking weird.

Jungkook still took some more turns until he arrived at his apartment and Taehyung was not at all surprised by the fact that it was a simple student accommodation, the ones that they would rent a single room and wouldn’t spend a lot of money on it, maybe even their parents would pay for it. Taehyung knew so not because of personal experience but rather because of his younger brother who was currently in his last year of school and would soon leave to one of this kind of accommodation. Not that Taehyung kept contact with his family anyway; he was just making some math and it certainly added up.

There was another simple and rather old building right in the front of the one Jungkook was getting in, and since they were about fifteen to twenty minutes of walking from the university Taehyung bet that that one was also a student accommodation. Its facade was a boring creme concrete with some faded blue detailing and a grey fire exit staircase that seemed to have been replaced recently in other to not crumble down in a rush. Every floor looked exactly the same, with matching double windows and a wooden-like door that was almost red in the street lights. The accommodation in which Jungkook currently lived in wasn’t much different, except that it had a brick facade that made the building looked somewhat more attractive to glance at; the floors were mirroring one another for it was a simple design to go for and the staircase was also grey but everything seemed fresher.

Taehyung waited for a moment, resting his back against the older building as he kept kicking ever so slightly little asphalt rocks or even cracking them under his sole just for the sake of it. The air was chilling as the night went in and it was getting more comfortable. A small group of students left their accommodation and greeted Taehyung, and he responded with a small bow of his head before shoving his hands into his jeans pockets. After some minutes of searching through the floors to which he was looking at, he found Jungkook at the fourth floor, opening the window and staying there for a while to enjoy the fresh air but Taehyung could notice something: there in the dark but brighter now because of his room lighting Jungkook’s face seemed sad. Rather frustrated if Taehyung could brag about having a good sight. He fixed his gaze on the boy as he breathed a lungful of air and let it out through his mouth, shoulders rising and falling in the action. He seemed like he had a hard day at the college, or maybe he was going through something tough in his life. Not that Taehyung would know.

He was just there to spy a little into the boy’s life and kill him in the countdown of two days or less.
