Work Text:
Izuku kicked at a loose piece of gravel as he made the slow walk back to his apartment in the pooring rain without an umbrella. It was pitch black outside, the rain so heavy it blocked the lights coming from lamp posts and buildings.
What had he done to deserve this? What bad karma had he incurred to warant his supposed boyfriend to stand him up? On Valentines Day no less.
It was supposed to be a romantic night. Izuku had it all set out. Dinner at one of the top restaurants in the city that he had been saving for for 6 months; followed by a movie and back to his apartment for...
Izuku ran his hands down his wet face. Tears mixed with rain that he couldn't tell which was which anymore. It was supposed to be a nice night.
3 years down the drain in the blink of an eye.
What was usual a 15 minute walk turned into an hour back to his apartment. Izuku took so many detours, hoping beyond hope that maybe his beloved was just running late and they'd run into each other at the last second, just like the stupid romance movies izuku loved so much.
But it never happened.
Before entering the building he looked up. Through the rain he could just make out the light coming from his sitting room. No doubt his roommate was back from his own date. Izuku smiles sadly, willing the tears to stop.
He wished the elevator ride was slower, as much as he hated to admit it he was insanely jealous of his friend right now, but the shrill ding in his ears disobeyed those wishes.
Izuku was soaking wet, the obscenely loud squelching of his loafers on carpet bounced off the walls reminding him of the nightmare he was currently walking through. He sneezed, turning the door knob to his apartment knowing Katsuki still has a nasty habit of leaving the damn thing unlocked.
He pulls himself into the small brightly lit apartment. Did Katsuki seriously have to have every light on?
"I-I'm home!" Izuku calls into the apartment, sneezing again afterwards.
The sound of running comes from the other side if the apartment before a head of spikey red head slides into the entrance. Eijirou, Katsuki's own boyfriend clad in just his boxers and a black tank top. Shit. Izuku disturbed them.
"O-oh s-sorry! I'll um..." Izuku had no idea what to do now. The last thing he wanted was to ruin someone else's Valentines. They didn't deserve that.
Izuku turned to leave but Eijirou grabbed his wrist and pulled him back. The redhead's grip was strong, he wasn't letting Izuku go anywhere.
Izuku didn't want this. Didn't want anyone to see his weakness. He promised himself he would never cry in front of anyone again but here he was, balling his eyes out, unable to control his emotions as Eijirou turned him around. Two strong arms wrapped his own thin, shaking shoulders.
Izuku hesitated to wrap his own arms around his friend, but when he did he hated to admit that Eijirou gave the best hugs. Their difference in height combined with the redhead's muscles were the perfect combination for Izuku to just sink into and soak up as much comfort as possible. Katsuki would no doubt curse at him later but right now he didn't care.
Despite the sopping mess that was the smaller greenette Eijirou held him close. The second they heard the door knob turn with a sneeze he and Katsuki knew something went wrong. Izuku was back far too early for what he'd planned. And the cracked voice? The final nail on the coffin.
From the corner of his eye Eijirou saw the blond make a quick appearance, tilting his head towards the sitting room before leaving again. At that signal he pulled back but kept Izuku close.
He was a mess. A heartbroken wreak of tears, snot and near hyperventilating. No wonder Katsuki left as quick as he did, the state of their sweet friend in this mess drove a jagged knife through Eijirou's heart. What happened?
"You wanna talk about it?" But Izuku shook his head.
"J-ust. Want. To. H-h-hide" God Izuku was a mess, only half heartedly wiping away the tears at this point. He was exhausted. Eijirou gently pushed his friend towards the bathroom.
"Go freshen up and join us for a movie." Izuku's eyes widen and shakes his head.
"N-no this is-"
Eijirou pushes at Izuku again. "Not buts. Go!"
Izuku trudges through the apartment, barely acknowledging his roommate on the way through. He spent an hour in the bath having scrubbed his skin raw to the point the colour could rival Eijirou's hair. Filthy. Unclean. Unloved. Anything to remove the horrible memory of this night. That's when Izuku had stopped and filled the bath with as much bubble mix as possible.
What had he done wrong? Hadn't he been a good partner? His bo...ex boyfriend's parents seemed to think they were a good match. Heck so did Izuku! He tried thinking back to their previous conversations, desperately trying to find any hint of their impending breakup.
But he found nothing. Everything he could remember was smiles, laughter and unconditional love. Where had he gone wrong?
A knock snapped Izuku from his thoughts. Eijirou's head popped in and Izuku smiled sadly. Katsuki was a lucky man.
"You feeling better?"
"Yea" Izuku lied. Eijirou made a face but let the lie slide as he left the bathroom. Izuku took that as his hint to get his wrinkly ass out of the bath.
He took his time...again. Taking another twenty minutes to dry and dress himself in a plain shirt and trousers: his comfort clothing.
Katsuki and Eijirou were still waiting for him on the couch, Katsuki slouched with Eijirou's head on his lap. They were muttering about something Izuku couldn't hear from the entrance, just the occasional c-bomb dropping from the blond's mouth much to Eijirou's displeasure.
Izuku had no idea what to do, had no idea why Eijirou would even insist he join them on their date night. Maybe he should just call it a night and cry himself to sleep before he does anything stupid and ruin everything. But before he could leave Katsuki straightened and turned his head to scowl at his roommate.
"You just gonna stand there like an idiot?" he barked making Izuku jump and quickly make his way over to the two.
The blond was still scowling by the time Izuku reached the couch. He was second guessing this situation again. Katsuki has a bad temper on the best of days and judging by his current mood it wasn't one of those days. Maybe he should just hide like he planned from the beginning. However it was Eijirou's bright welcoming smile that had Izuku change his mind.
Thr redhead sat up and made enough space between himself and Katsuki, even patting said empty space to get Izuku to sit. The greenette was hesitant of course. Katsuki had made it clear on his and Eijirou's first day as an official couple that no one gets in between them. Eijirou was clearly fine with the new development but Katsuki...Izuku chanced a glace and sure enough the scowl was even worse when Eijirou moved.
Izuku turned to leave, like he should have done the second he got home. There was a hand on his wrist again, no doubt it was the redhead, but the rough voice commanding him to sit was none other than Katsuki.
There was no option for negotiation, no time to fight against the hold as the blond roughly pulled Izuku down onto the couch. He was at a loss for words as an arm wrapped around his shoulders surprisingly belonging to the angry blond. Izuku swallowed the lump in his throat. It must be some sick revenge for leaving the milk out the other day to get spoilt.
That wasn't the case however when Katsuki grabbed the remote from the arm rest and hit the play button. The title screen appeared, one of Izuku's over sickly romance movies Katsuki can't stand watching. Why put this on? Izuku muttered to himself, knowing his question was more than likely heard by the other males and ignored. Everyone knew Izuku didn't have an inside voice.
The movie played on, bringing a fresh set of tears from Izuku as he compared his life to the fictional one. Why was everything so perfect in the movies? Was fate really so cruel to condemn Izuku to a life of loneliness? At some point during the movie Katsuki had pulled him closer. He never even noticed until Eijirou lay his head on his lap, much like he had with Katsuki 30 minutes ago.
The tears promptly stopped then, confusion temporarily replacing his heartache as he looked back and forth between his friends. "Why..." Izuku's voice cracked, throat too raw.
It took a minute but Eijiirou was the first to speak up, turning his head to address Izuku. "Because you're our friend." Katsuki grunted beside him.
"He was an asshole anyway. Didn't deserve you." Izuku continued to look back and forth between them. Comfort. They were offering comfort. Katsuki rarely showed any emotion to anyone other than his boyfriend and on the odd occassion Izuku.
The greenette sniffed, wiping the snot and tears on his sleeve and smiled through the heartache. He didn't deserve this, not after today.
"You deserve more than you realise nerd." Katsuki's cheeks were bright red, eyes trained on the tv screen so he didn't have to look Izuku in the eyes at his confession.
Izuku swallowed the lump in his throat again. There was a meaning behind their words and actions. Meanings Izuku's tired and broken brain couldn't decipher, so when Katsuki gently pulled him closer he just went with it, resting his head on the blond's shoulder as Katsuki massaged his arm. Eijirou turned back to the tv nuzzling into Izuku's legs.
Fresh tears leaked from Izuku's eyes and for the first time that night he smiled.
