Work Text:
“Hey, Ema, I’m home!” Maya calls as she walks into their apartment. She walks into the living room, expecting to find Ema on the couch, drinking coffee and writing up notes from her day’s investigations. But Ema isn’t here. “Ema! Where are you?”
“I’m in the bedroom!” Ema shouts, and Maya heads to their bedroom.
She opens the door and finds Ema in front of the mirror, admiring her reflection. She’s wearing a new blouse and skirt, and, judging by her expression, she seems to love them.
“Hi, Maya,” she says. “How was your day?”
“It was okay,” Maya says. “Nick’s got another weird case and we were checking out the crime scene. But enough about me. What are you wearing?”
Ema blushes. “It’s just some things I bought. I finished real early at the lab and thought I might as well go shopping.”
Maya grins and gives her a kiss. “Well, you made a great choice. You look beautiful.”
“Thank you,” Ema says, brushing her hair behind her ear.
As she does so, Maya notices something. Ema’s fingernails are blue.
“Are your nails painted?” she says.
Ema nods, and her hair falls across her face again. “Yeah, I bought some nail varnish too.”
“I didn’t think that was your style,” Maya says. She honestly can’t remember a time when Ema had her nails painted.
“It’s not, not really,” Ema says. “And I’ll have to take it off when I go back to work tomorrow, but I just felt like painting my nails. So I did.”
“Well, why not?” Maya says, and they both laugh. “It’s a lovely colour. Can I borrow it?”
Ema kisses her. “Of course you can.”
“It really suits you. You should wear nail polish more often.”
“You know, I think I will,” Ema says, smiling.
