Work Text:
Yoongi is eighteen and writing on his skin to no reply when he realises his soulmate is probably younger than him. He doesn't know by how much, but he knows that he's gonna have to wait a little while to meet them. That was pretty normal, from what he knows of soulmates, it would be a pretty big coincidence if they were the same age. He’s willing to wait for them. It was okay.
A few days after his eighteenth birthday, however, he’s startled to find a tiny doodle of a bunny, huge front teeth and all, on the inside of his left wrist. Steadying himself, he stares at the tiny animal for a long moment. That was the first thing he’d gotten from the person he could spend his whole life with. Slightly overwhelmed, he commits the cute picture to memory.
The drawings show up every once in a while, sometimes musical notes, other times just little doodles, and very occasionally, words. The musical notations makes him grin, because it’s nice to know that he and his soulmate have something in common.
Until one day, when Yoongi is studying for his exams at the library, he notices a date written in the back of his left hand.
It reads: 09/01/97 . He guesses that this is his soulmate’s birth date.
“Four years, huh..” Yoongi thinks, leaning back on his chair. He can wait.
--
Jungkook is sixteen when his best friend gets heartbroken by his soulmate.
“Calm down Hyung, what’s wrong?” Jungkook asks, as he closes his bedroom door. It’s late, and his eomma had given Taehyung a very alarmed look as he’d stormed into the house and up the stairs.
Now Taehyung sits on the floor of Jungkook’s room, sobbing.
“Happy fucking New Year, my soulmate is Park Jimin and he just rejected me,” He says bitterly.
Jungkook freezes.
“Who? I mean, wait, what? Tell me what happened,” Jungkook hurries to Taehyung’s side to comfort him.
The older takes a few seconds to breathe, and wipes away his tears to no avail. They just keep coming.
“So like, you know my birthday was on December 30th right? I thought it would be nice to say Happy New Year to my soulmate and see if they answered. At first nothing happened, no reply, and days passed by so I presumed my soulmate wasn’t old enough yet to see my message.” Taehyung rests his head on his knees, which are tucked to his chest.
“I went to this party today and got pretty wasted, and someone wrote something on my face, in like, marker or something? We were just messing around. The next thing I know, Park Jimin is dragging me into a bedroom. He tells me to clean my face,” Taehyung point at his cheek, “And that’s when I got it, he’s my soulmate. His face had ‘u succ’ written on it. I asked him why he didn’t answer me on New Year’s Eve, and he justs snapped at me saying that he’s already got a boyfriend, warned me to clean my face and told me I wasn’t his true soulmate. Then he just opened the door and left.”
Jungkook attempts to comfort Taehyung that night. He realises then just how much power a soulmate has over a person, and how much pain they can cause. He himself has two years until he’ll be able to see what his soulmate writes to him, two years until he can find out who they are.
Before, he’d had the same ideas about soulmates as most other people, as they were all taught the same in school. Everyone assumes that they’ll find their soulmate, and then they’ll spend the rest of their lives together. Nobody talks about those who don’t find their soulmate. Since he was around twelve, he drew on his skin in the possibility that his soulmate was older than him and might see it. Now he was coming to terms with what happened to Taehyung, he was starting to think that rejections could be more common than people liked to talk about. It terrifies him.
--
When Yoongi turns twenty, he notices that his soulmate isn’t drawing as much as before. He wonders if something is wrong, but guesses they must be busy with school, or something like that. He hopes, anyway.
Yoongi himself isn’t doing that great. Although he is at university doing a course he actually wants to do, it’s tiring, and he’s forced to work as a waiter in a lamb skewer restaurant if he wants to pay his living expenses and tuition. His friends are in much of the same position, so he doesn’t see them as often as he wants to. The only friend he gets to see fairly often is Seokjin, who he actually has some classes with.
Seokjin’s soulmate is older than him and Korean-American, and by the time Seokjin turned eighteen, his soulmate had moved to study abroad. That doesn’t stop them talking to each other constantly, though. Seokjin is always on his phone, taking pictures and sending messages all day long. Sometimes Yoongi can see the words written on his skin that must be from him, the soulmate, but he figures they mustn’t have too much need for that now they can actually hear each other’s voices over the phone.
Yoongi squashes the ache that rises in his chest at the thought of being able to hear the voice of his own soulmate.
Wiping a table, he thinks about his soulmate’s lack of communication again. He hopes whoever it is isn’t having too much of a hard time; he feels horrible that he can’t offer them any comfort. The drawings and notes they had left on him offered him a lot of solace when he was feeling down. Over the years, even before he turned eighteen, he’d found a lot of consolation in the fact that there was someone out there connected to him, his true other half, that would understand him better than everyone else. It made him feel so much less alone in his teenage years.
He sighs. Two more years.
On the next day, Yoongi meets Seokjin for lunch. He grabs some food and heads to the table where Seokjin is eating, one hand using his chopsticks and the other busy texting.
“Hey Hyung, what are you up to?” Yoongi says, taking a seat at the table.
“Hi Yoongi! Just talking to Noah. The time difference is a bit rough, but he’s finished classes and everything by this time, it’s the best time to talk. And you, any news?” Seokjin answers as he puts his cellphone down on the table.
“Nothing much,” Yoongi sighs. “Work is still shitty, but I’ve been working on a new song. It’s not even near finished but yeah, I’m liking it so far,” Yoongi plays with his food. They talk about one of their classes for a while, before Seokjin gets distracted by his phone again.
Eventually his attention returns to Yoongi. “So, uh, I know you don’t like too many people in one space, but this guy in my class is throwing a party because it's been a year since he found his soulmate, or something.” Seokjin says hopefully.
Yoongi hums. He has no idea why Seokjin would want to invite him to a party, knowing full well how awkward Yoongi is.
“I know you’re really stressed out these days, so it might do you some good. Plus, I think you will really like my friend, his name is Namjoon and he has a thing for poetry, so you guys could talk about lyrics to your new song or something.”
Yoongi agrees, mainly because he doesn’t want to disappoint Seokjin who is clearly trying hard, but maybe a little because he feels a bit lonely. Hopefully he’ll be able to meet new people at the party. He really needs more friends.

Jungkook is seventeen when his imobu passes away. It’s horribly sudden, a car accident, and Jungkook listens with a heavy heart as his appa explains that he died instantly, wouldn’t have felt any pain. He wasn’t there when the police told his imo, but he saw the way his eomma holds his appa afterwards, the haunted expression on her face.
It’s then he sees the pain of truly losing a soulmate through death, and knowing that you’ll never see them again. His imo is broken. She had been the one to introduce Jungkook to art, founding his love of drawing, sitting with him throughout his younger years and allowing him full access to her art supplies. She had been the one to encourage him to draw on his skin for his soulmate to see.
His imo stops painting, stops drawing, stops coming around for dinner. Without her husband, her soulmate, she seemed to lose the will to live. His parents grow more concerned as she only seems to deteriorate, eating less and less.
Jungkook is petrified. What if this happens to him? His soulmate truly has the capability to break him, his heart, his spirit.
Maybe if he doesn’t attach himself to his soulmate, stops leaving them messages, and stops thinking about his future as certainly intertwined with theirs, he could prevent the pain that he sees in Taehyung’s eyes, or the lack of anything at all he sees in his imo. It’s then that Jungkook makes a decision.
He will stop. He doesn’t have to contact his soulmate. When he’s eighteen, he won’t even ask to meet them.
It’s better this way, he thinks.
--
Yoongi is twenty two, and today is the day that his soulmate turns eighteen. It had been a long four years, but he had been patient, and now he was ready to finally speak to whoever it is that is his other half. The first thing he did when he woke up was check his skin for anything his soulmate might have left him, and was disappointed to find nothing at all. He reassures himself with the thought that maybe his soulmate isn’t awake yet, maybe they’re in a different timezone, it did happen. Yoongi considers reaching out to them, but makes himself wait. He could wait another day.
Except that day passes, and so does another, and Yoongi is beside himself with worry. What if something horrible had happened? Trembling, he sits staring at his hands and arms in his room. Still nothing.
He reaches for a pen, and hesitates over the skin on his left hand, before letting out a shaky breath.
Are you there?
--
On his eighteenth birthday, Jungkook doesn't write on his skin. He spends the day at the beach, staring at the ocean and pretending that soulmates don’t exist.
He wants to run away.
When he gets home, he packs his stuff. He’s going study art in Seoul; his train leaves in a couple of days.
“Are you okay, sweetie?” His eomma is leaning against his bedroom door. “Do you need any help with your bag?”
“I’m fine, I just finished packing my art supplies,” Jungkook says as he sitting back on his bed.
His mom nods, and enters the room to sit beside him.
“Listen Gukkie, if you have any problems you can always talk to me or your aunt, we will be there for you. And even if we can’t be there in person, you know that you’re not really alone, don’t you?”
Jungkook doesn’t answer. He knows that he could try to reach out to his soulmate, but after all that’s happened he can’t bring himself to do it.
He says goodbye to his family, and sends a text message to Taehyung, who had asked what time he was leaving. Taehyung had moved back to Daegu after the Jimin accident. He still spoke to Jungkook regularly, but he had to take a break from everything after what happened. Jungkook misses his best friend, but understands that it’s for the best.
He puts his bag on the luggage rack and takes his seat on the left side of the car, next to the window. His train car is almost empty, only a old lady sitting at the back, and a man wearing fancy clothes sitting in the front.
The train is half way there when Jungkook wakes up from a nap. Rubbing his eyes, he notices something written on the back of his left hand that wasn’t there before.
Are you there?
It’s his soulmate. His soulmate is reaching out to him, and Jungkook doesn't know what to do. He thinks about what to say in response, because he really doesn't want to hurt his soulmate’s feelings, so he can’t ignore them. God knows how long they’ve already waited for him.
He picks up a pen from his bag, and writes back.
I’m sorry, but I’m not ready.
--
“Hyung, whats wrong?”
“What do you mean what's wrong, Joon?”
It's a Sunday evening and they’re at Namjoon and Hoseok’s apartment, sitting side by side watching TV after having dinner. After that party Seokjin invited him to, Yoongi and the younger turned into good friends, and all four of them often hung out on the weekends.
“Well, you have been staring at your hand for like, the past fifteen minutes or so? You okay?” Namjoon asks, taking a sip of his beer.
Yoongi wonders if he should tell him about his soulmate not being ready to meet up yet.
Namjoon and Hoseok knew that they were soulmates the moment the elder turned eighteen. The two were best friends already, so on Hobi’s birthday they went out to get some cake and celebrate. Namjoon suggested him to try write something to see if he soulmate would reply, only to see the same words appearing on his skin at the same time. It was easy for them, so maybe Namjoon wouldn't be able to help him about his matter.
“Tell me what it is, Hyung, it’s okay.”
Yoongi hesitates, but tells him anyway, the whole sad story. About the bunnies, about the birthday and about his soulmate not being ready. Namjoon gives him a hug when he finishes.
He feels like crying. He knows that there must be a good reason for his soulmate to say that, and he knows something must have happened to them, because his soulmate had stopped leaving drawings for him years ago. And he doesn't want to be that person. But he has waited four years, four long years with only a tiny bit of sunshine, followed by a long night.
“Hey, I should get going, gotta work tomorrow and show the new kid they hired around the place,” Yoongi stands and starts picking his things up.
“Oh okay, good luck with that, Hyung. And if you ever need someone to talk to, just know that we’re here.”
Yoongi smiles in response, reaching the door.
“Hyung? Everything will turn out okay. Don’t worry.”
As Yoongi walks home, he thinks about his soulmate. They’re somewhere out there. They might be really hurting, and he feels so helpless that he can’t fix it, as well as miserable because he just feels.... not good enough. He doesn’t want to force himself onto them. He resigns himself to not contacting them, and giving them the space they need, as much as it pains him.
He wonders if he’ll ever be able to meet his soulmate at all.
--
It’s Jungkook’s first day at his part time job, and he’s anxious as hell. His classes haven’t begun, so he spends the whole day thinking about it. He leaves his dorm and makes his way there. It's not much, but he got a job as a waiter in a lamb skewer restaurant. He can’t complain because its nearby and maybe if he works hard he can have some lamb skewers for free. Jackpot.
Jungkook arrives and looks inside to see if there is anyone there already. He sees movement, so he opens the restaurant door, and the bell tinkles.
“We’re not open yet,” A man’s voice calls out.
Jungkook enters further into the place and sees a guy in the back, wiping some tables.
“Hi, I’m Jeon Jungkook?” He says hesitantly, “I’m supposed to start today, as a waiter.”
“Oh,” The man turns and walks towards him, cleaning his hands on his apron. “My bad, nice to meet you. I’m Min Yoongi.”
The man- or better, Min Yoongi, is quite small, with black hair and cat like eyes, and he’s wearing a soft white sweater underneath his black apron.
If he wasn’t smiling warmly, Jungkook might have looked intimidated by the guy, but he appears nice enough. And looks kinda cute in that oversized sweater, as well.
“I’m the one that’s supposed to show you around and stuff,” Yoongi says, after they shake hands. The guy has gorgeous hands, too. “Let’s head to the back so we can get you an apron.”
Yoongi teaches him how to use the cash register, and shows him the kitchen and the dishwashing station, as well as the order and service process.
“It’s pretty simple, you come up to the table, get the order, write it on this notepad and leave the order on the side there. We open up at 6, but the customers starts coming by 7, usually,” Yoongi hands him a notepad and a pen.
“Don’t worry, and if you need any help don’t hesitate to call me over,” Yoongi says, offering another smile.
“Thank you, Yoongi-ssi.”
Jungkook is still nervous throughout his shift, but he manages to avoid messing up too badly. Yoongi is a great reassurance, quietly helping Jungkook find things and even taking over one of his tables when the customers ask a lot of difficult questions. He must have noticed that Jungkook’s anxious, and gives him a kind smile and a pat on the back when their shift ends, walking him out of the restaurant.
“Good job today, I hope you can feel less nervous next time. Don’t worry about that table from before, they were kind of assholes.”
Jungkook chuckles at that, feeling relieved. The shift was way better than he had hoped, probably thanks to Yoongi.
“Thank you again, Yoongi-ssi.” Jungkook says, returning the apron and picking up his stuff.
“No problem, kid. See you tomorrow.” Yoongi waves goodbye.
Jungkook walks back to the dorm, being careful to not make any loud noises as it’s past 11pm. He takes off his shoes, changes into his pajamas and lays on his bed, staring at the ceiling. Then, he looks at the window, the lights of the city entering his room. It’s beautiful, and he barely finds himself homesick for Busan. With a smile on his face as he starts to drift off, he decides to spend the next day in the city with his sketchbook to draw a bit.
--
At Hoseok and Namjoon’s house a week later, Yoongi raids the fridge for snacks.
“Don’t invite me around for lunch if you don’t have any food in your house, Seok,” Yoongi grumbles.
“Stop moaning, Hyung. You owe me skewers, anyway, I thought you were gonna bring me some from work?” Hoseok is unbothered by Yoongi’s complaints, and Yoongi gives up on his search. He’ll have to go home to eat, or something.
Yoongi sighs. “I can’t bring meat from work, it’s a health hazard, they won’t let me. Stop trying.”
Hoseok sighs dramatically, and to stop him from inevitably complaining about Yoongi’s lack of love for him, he decides to tell him about the new guy.
He sits on the couch. “So, remember I said I had to show the new kid around the other day?”
“Yeah? Oh, are you about to tell me he’s cute?” Hoseok raises his eyebrows, smirking.
“He is,” Yoongi sighs, “Young, he’s a first year, but very cute. Not from Seoul. He was really nervous on his first day, like a scared bunny. Every time the chef called for him he jumped out of his skin. Not incompetent, though.”
Hoseok cooed. “Not incompetent? You must like him. Maybe Joon and I will bring Seokjin around and say hi.”
“Just because I call you incompetent doesn’t mean that I treat new trainees like that. And don’t scare him off, please,” Yoongi scoffs.
Hoseok sticks his tongue out at him childishly.
Yoongi leaves to go back to work at his internship. He can’t stop daydreaming about his soulmate. It’s been a month since they talked, if you could even call it that, and he wonders if they are doing okay. He convinces himself again that it’s better to not ask them about when they’ll be ready. If they ever will be. He doesn’t want to be selfish.
Work ends, and Yoongi picks up his backpack and leaves for his shift at the restaurant. Before taking the subway, he grabs some street food on the way.
The subway isn't full and he gets to sit and wait to arrive at his station. He pops on his headphones and presses play on his phone. Yoongi listens to the song he’s been working on, now almost done, he just needs to change up a few notes at the end and it will be complete. He feels very proud of it.
He arrives at the restaurant, only to find Jungkook inside already setting up the tables. He goes to the staff room and puts his backpack in the locker, noting that Jungkook’s is stuffed in the left side.
“Hey Jungkook, how are you?” He greets the younger while putting on his apron.
“Hello, Yoongi-ssi,” Jungkook smiles up at him brightly, if still a little shyly. “I’m doing just fine.”
“Oh, you can call me Hyung. If you want to. You don’t have to!” Yoongi says, winking at him, and then panicking because god, he was so awkward.
“Okay, um, Hy-hyung. Thanks,” Jungkook laughs awkwardly.
Yoongi pats him on the shoulder.
“Let’s get this shift over with, kid.”
Over the course of this shift and the next, Yoongi realises that he wants to know more about this kid, who now he realises actually seems a little melancholy. He doesn’t know him well enough to ask what was wrong, so he settles for asking about school, a safe bet.
“So you’re an art student? Do you draw, then?” Yoongi asks curiously.
“Yeah, I’ve always loved drawing. Ever since I was young.”
“That’s really cool.” Yoongi smiles at him encouragingly, and Jungkook ducks his head a little.
“Did you graduate already, Hyung?”
“Yeah, just graduated. Got a degree in Music Production. I really want to go into producing. I have an internship at a company right now.”
Jungkook blinks at him with wide eyes. “That’s awesome! I love music. Maybe in another universe I study that instead.”
Yoongi encourages Jungkook to talk more about his love of art, whilst fondly thinking of his soulmate again, and he glances at his arm which was once full of cute doodles and smiley faces. He misses them. Misses his soulmate even though he’s never met them. How pitiful.
--
Yoongi and Jungkook get closer over time. Jungkook becomes more comfortable with Yoongi, less shy and awkward. They have a natural rapport, the awkwardness of acquaintances giving way to the teasing of hyung and dongsaeng, and sometimes they even hang out after work to eat. Namjoon, Hoseok and Seokjin visit the restaurant and meet Jungkook. They all get along pretty well and Yoongi brings Jungkook to the apartment to hang out around their busy schedules.
One Monday, there aren’t many customers so Jungkook gets his sketchbook and sits in the corner to draw. He warms up by sketching out the tables and the few people eating, before moving on to a project. Yoongi comes closer and takes a look at his sketchbook. He’s seen a few of Jungkook’s drawings before, and he’s always impressed; they have a dreamy quality, all interesting lines and lack of clarity in an easily identifiable image. Right now, Jungkook’s drawing a cat, with it’s eyes being the focus of the picture, but Jungkook has put just as much effort into the surroundings, which remind Yoongi of constellations. It’s strange but beautiful.
“Nice drawing, Kookie,” He says, taking a seat beside Jungkook.
“Oh Hyung, didn’t see you there,” He puts down his pen and lifts his sketchbook so Yoongi can see better. “Do you like it?”
“Yeah, it looks pretty good. Like, professional good,” Yoongi is kind of awed, actually.
Jungkook’s face lights up with a smile. “Really? Thanks, that means a lot.”
Their eyes meet, and Yoongi feels his cheeks heating up a little. He takes a second to look Jungkook over, and he’s just wearing a simple white t-shirt with his apron over it, so Yoongi doesn’t know why he thinks the younger is so attractive right now.
“S-sure…” Yoongi stutters, looking away.
Jungkook doesn't say anything else, but keeps staring at him. Oh god, he has to say something to break the tension.
“Um, so you know that I make my own music, right?” he pauses, waiting for a reaction but when he doesn't get any, he continues. “I was wondering if you would like to, uh, draw the cover for a release? Maybe?”
“For your music? Really? Draw the cover art?”
“Only if you want to, though,” Yoongi swallows dryly. “Like, I don't want to make you do it-”
“No no no, I’ll do it! I know that your music means a lot to you, so I’m just kind of shocked that you would ask me, of all people” Jungkook looks stunned. He really is so endearing, Yoongi thinks.
“Are you sure? I don’t want you to feel obligated-” Yoongi is interrupted by Jungkook enveloping him in a hug.
“I would be honored to. Really,” Jungkook’s eyes are bright and shiny. It’s pretty; he’s pretty.
Yoongi hugs him back, and it feels so warm and reassuring, and he he doesn't really want to let go. More customers come in, and they have to pull away from each other.
On Yoongi’s way back home, he finds himself listening to his music with a gummy smile on his face.
--
Jungkook never forgets about his soulmate; they’re always a constant presence at the back of his mind, but in Seoul he does find happiness. He really enjoys doing what he loves most in school, and his job isn’t that bad. Especially because he gets to spend time with Yoongi, who is fast becoming his favourite hyung (although he would never tell Taehyung that). He enjoys the attention he receives from the elder, the way he always treats him to dinner after their shifts together, but still doesn’t treat him like a baby, talking to him enthusiastically about new projects he’s working on.
They have a day off, so Jungkook goes to their usual hang out place, Namjoon and Hoseok’s apartment. Yoongi, Namjoon and Hoseok are already there, talking about the movie that's on the TV. Seokjin isn't there as he flew to meet his soulmate, which apparently is an annual thing.
“Must be hard for them to be apart for so long, I don't know if I could do it,” Hobi says, with a sad expression. He is sitting on Namjoon’s lap, both on the floor.
“Yeah, me neither,” Namjoon agrees, playing with Hobi’s hair.
“My aunt had it worse,” Jungkook says, and everyone looks up at him. “Her husband died in a car accident last year. I have never seen someone get so lost and hurt like that before. It was truly terrifying.” As Jungkook speaks, he realises that he’s never really talked about what happened before, which is crazy considering the impact that it had on him.
He stares at the back of his left hand, where once was written the only message he’s got from his soulmate.
“I’m sorry, Kookie,” Yoongi says. They’re sitting side by side on the couch, so it’s easy for Yoongi to put his arm around the somber looking boy.
“Yeah, me too,” He says, leaning his head on Yoongi’s shoulder. “Thanks, Hyung.”
He appreciates the comfort and warmth Yoongi gives him. Yoongi has always been kind towards him, knowing Jungkook’s limits and giving him space to finally open up. He feels safe with him.
He knows that he has a crush on his hyung, because every time he sees Yoongi’s smile, he melts inside. He has several drawings of Yoongi, his eyes, his hands, and his lips in the sketchbook, all carefully hidden away. His heart flutters at so many things that Yoongi does; when he shows his gummy smile, when Jungkook manages to make him laugh, and he loves the fluffy oversized sweaters Yoongi wears that make him look even smaller. His tiny hyung.
Neither of them talk about their soulmates; Yoongi has never mentioned his, and Jungkook is so curious as to what’s going on there but he doesn’t want to upset him by asking.
--
Yoongi gets a permanent job at the company he interned with, but the wage is shitty and he has to keep his restaurant job, something that endlessly frustrates him as he’s exhausted working two jobs and barely has any time to work on his own music. Before he knows it, a year has passed by since he met Jungkook.
On the younger’s birthday, the five of them go out to celebrate. Yoongi gets Jungkook a watercolor paint set and Jungkook almost cries because of it. They’ve grown close, yet are always careful not cross the line of ‘best friends’. How could they, knowing that they weren’t the other’s soulmate?
Everything is pretty uneventful. That is, until one Saturday.
The weather is getting cold, so Yoongi layers up for work as the restaurant is notoriously chilly on the inside. He puts on a scarf and gloves before leaving for his shift. Jungkook had texted him to tell him that he had finished the cover art for his new single, and he was going to show Yoongi the final result today. Yoongi was really excited about it as he knew that he would love anything that Jungkook drew for him.
He arrives at the restaurant, putting his things in the locker and pulling on his apron. Even inside, he still feels cold so he only takes of his scarf reluctantly, leaving his gloves on.
Jungkook arrives a bit late today, he apologizes and excuses himself to start working.
Yoongi notices that Jungkook is a bit clumsy today. The boy had already arrived late; he also messed up an order and broke a glass. He was worried, but they couldn’t talk properly during work, so he just watches Jungkook to make sure he doesn’t hurt himself.
Yoongi was taking an order when he notices some movement in the back. He sees Jungkook with a frown on his face, heading towards the bathroom. Poor kid.
When they finish work, Yoongi goes up to talk to him.
“Hey, are you alright?” Yoongi asks. “What happened to you earlier?”
Looking at him up close, he notices that there’s blue ink everywhere; on the boy’s clothes, on his apron, on both of his hands, even some in his hair. He feels the urge to reach out hand start wiping it away, but he crosses his arms instead to stop himself.
“Hey, Hyung…” Jungkook mumbles, trying fruitlessly to remove some of the ink from his clothes. “I’m just pissed off. Everything went wrong today.”
Yoongi nods in response, encouraging him to keep talking about it.
“I got stuck in class and didn't have time go get my coat in the dorm, so obviously I was freezing. Then I got here late, messed up shit and even broke a glass. And now this? Stupid pen and its stupid blue ink.”
“Hey Kookie, it’s okay,” Yoongi pats him in the shoulder. “Everyone has their bad days, don’t worry. I'm sure everything will be fine tomorrow, hm?”
Jungkook just smiles in response. Yoongi tells him to not to worry about the glass; he had already put the money for it in the register.
“Ah, that’s really kind of you, thanks, Hyung,” Jungkook says, giving him a little hug before leaving to get his things from the locker.
“No problem, Kook,” Yoongi waves goodbye as he leaves the restaurant.
On the way home, he gets a text message from Jungkook, saying that he forgot to show him the cover art because of all that happened, thanks him again for paying for the broken glass and sends a heart emoji. Wow.
Its okay, you can show it to me tomorrow :)
Yoongi gets home, takes off his shoes and his many layers. He proceeds to the bathroom to brush his teeth, and distracted thinking about that heart emoji. Sighing, he decided it probably didn’t mean anything.
Or maybe it did?
When Yoongi looks down at his hands, he finds both completely stained with faded blue ink.
No. It can’t be.
Yoongi panics and turns on the faucet, scrubbing his hands frantically to no success.
Shit.
--
Yoongi avoids meeting Jungkook’s eyes at work the next day. Exhausted, he hadn’t slept due to his mind being so consumed with thoughts of Jungkook. He was so off that he didn't even realize that he hadn't eaten all day, or that he had put on mismatching socks. Even when the poor boy shows him the cover art he’d worked so hard to prepare for him, Yoongi can only nod and thank him distractedly. He wants to just grab Jungkook by the shoulders and tell him everything. Oh god, he’s such a mess.
Of course. Of course Yoongi would fall half in love with his soulmate before even knowing it was him. It’s kind of horrible, because he knows that Jungkook doesn’t want him, but he thanks the universe for bringing them together anyway. The idea that he might not have met Jungkook hurts so much, because he knows now how precious the boy is. Even though Jungkook might not want him back, he feels so lucky that he’s Jungkook’s soulmate. He just wishes everything could be easier.
Yoongi can't even tell Jungkook that he knows, because after all, there must be a reason why Jungkook said he wasn't ready. He feels so horrible, knowing Jungkook must have been hurting so badly all this time - he remembers what the kid said about his imo. But, god, Yoongi has waited for his soulmate for so long already, four years of hope and expectation and now months of heartbreak.
Yoongi knows that what Jungkook needs from him right now is a friend, not a soulmate. It hurts, but at least they are together now in some respects. No more darkness. He can wait for Jungkook some more. He tells himself to keep hope alive, even though at the back of his mind, he knows there is the possibility that Jungkook will never want him.
--
It’s a normal day at the restaurant, a regular number of customers, no orders messed up. A couple enters and takes a table. Jungkook takes their order, noticing that they both have the same drawings in their hands.
“You know, Hyung, when I was in highschool, my best friend at the time turned eighteen and tried to contact his soulmate, only to find out that they were already with someone,” Jungkook says, watching the couple from afar. “It wasn't pretty. They fought and in the end, my best friend moved away. I still don't know what happened to them. It scared the hell outta me.”
Jungkook doesn't feel shy around Yoongi. Yoongi is always there for him, when he’s upset or tired, making sure he eats and is getting enough rest, even if Yoongi sometimes acts fake reluctant like a grumpy hyung. Jungkook knows that he can trust him, so he even tells him about his soulmate.
“What about yours, Hyung?” Jungkook asks out of curiosity. His hyung had never brung his soulmate up, not even once.
“What about it?”
“Do you talk to them? Your soulmate?”
“Yeah,” Yoongi smiles to himself. “All the time.”
“Oh,” Jungkook says, feeling a pinch of jealousy in him. “They are very lucky to have you as soulmate.”
“You think so?” Yoongi answers, giving him a soft look that Jungkook doesn’t quite understand.
--
Four months pass by. It’s January, and Yoongi gets promoted so he doesn’t have to work at the restaurant anymore. He’s partially relieved, but also saddened that he doesn’t get to see a certain dongsaeng as often.
At Christmas everyone had gone home to visit their families, and Jungkook only came back at New Year’s Eve for the party Namjoon and Hoseok were hosting. Everyone was there, even Seokjin’s soulmate, Noah, who had finally come back from abroad. They clearly couldn't be happier.
As the countdown came to an end, Jungkook gives Yoongi a kiss on the cheek.
“Happy New Year, Hyung,” Jungkook said, hugging him tightly.
“Happy New Year, Kook-ah.”
Two days later, Jungkook sends Yoongi a text, asking him if he wants to grab some coffee and walk around a bit later.
Yeah, sure :)
What time?
Jungkook waits, sitting inside the cafe. He had a black and white shirt on, that he bought after Yoongi telling him to buy other clothes than white t-shirts. Thinking of Yoongi makes him smile. But he tries to squash those thoughts. He feels guilty for having a crush on another person other than his soulmate. He had told them that he wasn’t ready for that, and yet was there having feelings for his hyung, with just as much possibility for heartbreak.
While he is waiting he gets a text message:
Yooooo you are not gonna believe this!
It’s Taehyung. Oh my god, it had been so long since they talked.
Yoo dude! It's been ages!
Tell me what's up ;)

Me and Jimin got together!
I’m so happy :)
Jungkook loses his breath. His chest is suddenly filled with a multitude of emotions.
Seriously?? When did this happen?
A few days ago on my birthday
I was there eating my cake, when I look at my
hand I see an apology
Can you believe it?
He can’t believe it, actually. It seemed so easy, somehow. How did Taehyung forgive him so easily?
Oh wow i didn't expect that.
Are you guys okay now?
Yeah, I think he only needed time to think about everything
and stuff, but we are fine now.
Im sooo happy :)
That's really nice, Tae
I'm really happy for you two.
He puts his phone back in his pocket. He’s kind of in shock. He feels like his worldview is being completely shaken. He can’t believe that Taehyung would really take Jimin in so easily after being hurt like that. Taehyung had been broken when Jimin rejected him, and now suddenly everything was fine? It sounded far too simple to Jungkook. He hesitates before reaching for his phone again, but he has to know something.
I’m sorry to pry, but
How did you forgive him so easily?
Jungkook waits a long moment for a reply, watching the speech bubbles appear and disappear that indicated that Taehyung was writing.
I was really hurt at first
But eventually i realised
He’s my soulmate
We’re meant to be together
And we’ll always be bonded
Jimin said he was sorry, and i believed him
I couldn't not forgive him
The happiness that we could have for a moment
is worth more than any pain
It’s so hard for Jungkook to wrap his head around, but maybe. Maybe after all of that had happened, he was wrong. His heart beats double time. What if he had made a mistake? What if having a soulmate doesn't always have to mean getting hurt? Or if Taehyung is right, then it would be worth the pain. Jungkook doesn’t know how to deal with this information. What does he do now?
He’s distracted when Yoongi eventually arrives, because he’s so goddamn confused. He thinks that he should probably contact his soulmate, but he still doesn’t want to get hurt, doesn’t feel ready to give his whole heart to someone who has the potential to ruin it. On top of that, he knows that he has feelings for Yoongi, so how can he in good conscience contact his soulmate, knowing his heart belongs to another? What he feels for Yoongi may not be a soul bond, but it’s still real.
He watches his hyung with a smile as he sits in front of Jungkook, talking about inane things. He looks pretty today. Jungkook doesn’t know what to do. He feels like his heart is being torn in half.
--
Yoongi realises that Jungkook isn’t listening to him about halfway through his rant about the guy that lives in the apartment above him. He’s kind of offended that he doesn’t have Jungkook’s full attention, considering how hard he tried to look good today just because he was meeting the kid. He runs a hand self-consciously through his carefully styled hair, probably ruining it due to stress.
“What’s up, Kook? You seem really distracted.”
Jungkook sighs. “You know my friend Taehyung I told you about? The one who got rejected by his soulmate?”
Yoongi nods. “Yeah?”
“Well, I just spoke to him. He and his soulmate got together. He’s really happy. It’s crazy, what happened to him affected me so much, and he just got over it like… it was nothing. It has me thinking about my soulmate - I told them I didn’t want to speak to them, when I turned eighteen, but now…” He looked at Yoongi with wide eyes. Yoongi has to work hard to not let his emotions show on his face. This might be it.
“Are you gonna write to them?”
Jungkook bites his lip. “I don’t know, Hyung. What if they’ve given up on me? Or what if I had that panic for a reason, and I’m going to get my heart broken?”
Yoongi has to stop himself from screaming out loud, in happiness or frustration, he doesn’t know. He also kind of wants to give Jungkook a hug, he looks so scared and worried, so he moves to sit next to him and wraps him up in his arms.
“I really think you should do it, Kook. They’re your soulmate, there’s no way that they’ll have given up on you.”
For a second, Yoongi thinks that Jungkook looks disappointed. Then he receives a small smile.
‘Thanks, Hyung. I’ll think about it.”
--
It’s Yoongi’s birthday. Jungkook has bought his hyung a new pair of headphones with his savings. He dresses up nicely, and takes a look at the mirror.
Today is the day he’s letting his crush go. He was more than a little disappointed when Yoongi encouraged him to write to his soulmate, because he’s pretty sure that Yoongi wouldn’t have actually done that if he liked Jungkook back.
He knocks on the door to Yoongi’s apartment, and Seokjin opens it on the other side.
“Hey! You’re early,” Jin says. “Guys, Jungkookie is here!” He yells over his shoulder. “Come on in, make yourself at home.”
Jungkook takes off his shoes and steps in further the apartment. Inside, he can see Hobi and Namjoon dancing stupidly to some electronic music, Seokjin on his way to join them. They are messing around, and Yoongi is in the couch, laughing so hard his tummy must hurt.
“Jungkook-ah! Join us, come on!” Namjoon says, pulling him by the hand.
“Only if Yoongi Hyung does too,” Jungkook points at him.
Hobi pulls Yoongi out of the couch before he could even answer, dragging him to the middle of his living room.
Later, Yoongi opens his presents. Hobi and Namjoon give him a notebook with space for musical notation. Seokjin gets him a nice new fluffy black sweater.
“Here, Hyung, I hope you like it,” Jungkook hands over his present. He tries not to appear nervous as Yoongi opens it.
“Oh my god, Kookie, these are so nice,” Yoongi hugs him tight. He smells like strawberry. “Thank you so much, it really means a lot.”
They eat a lot of snacks and lots of cake, too. By the end, everyone is full, and lays spread out around somewhere in the house.
“Hey, it's getting late, me and Joon are going to take off,” Hobi says, standing up and offering his hand to help Namjoon up.
“Yeah, I think I’m gonna go, too,” Seokjin says, picking up his things.
Yoongi leads them to the door, saying goodbyes and receiving happy birthdays again.
“It’s kinda messy, do you wanna hang out in my room?” Yoongi suggests, trying and failing to clean up his kitchen table. They really had made a mess. Jungkook feels a little bad.
“Yeah, alright.”
They relocate to Yoongi’s room, and Jungkook awkwardly sits on Yoongi’s bed while his hyung takes the chair. Yoongi is wearing a hoodie and sweatpants. He looks very soft and boyfriend-like, but Jungkook re-directs that train of thought somewhere else immediately.
“Today was really fun,” Yoongi leans back on the chair as he stretches. “Thanks for coming, Kookie.”
“Of course, Hyung. You’re my best friend. I’m not gonna miss your birthday.”
They don't say anything for a while. Those words hurt both of them.
“So,” Yoongi breaks the silence. He stands up and sits next to Jungkook, looking serious. “Have you thought any more about contacting your soulmate?”
Jungkook sighs. “I haven’t had the guts to do it yet. I’m really scared, hyung. There’s so many ‘what if’s.”
“Jungkook,” Yoongi moves to sit next to him on the bed and puts a reassuring hand on Jungkook’s knee. “I'm sure everything will work out. Trust me.”
Jungkook really doesn't want to let go of his feelings for Yoongi, but he knows that's the right thing to do. It’s not like there’s a real possibility for them to be together anyway, not if Yoongi doesn’t return them.
“Yeah,” Jungkook mumbles, “I’ll think about it some more. I don’t even know what to write.”
Yoongi looks at him for a long moment. “You know what? Do it now.”
“What?” Jungkook just blinks at him. That’s crazy. He can’t do it now. He’s not ready!
“Do it as a second gift for my birthday,” Yoongi takes both of his hands. “Pretty please? For me?” He looks sincere. Jungkook is a both saddened and surprised by the reaction. It hurts, knowing that Yoongi wants him to be with someone else.
Oh, those eyes. Jungkook sighs. How could he say no? He’s so weak for this hyung.
“Yeah, okay,” He shrugs. He tries hard to look nonchalant, like it doesn’t hurt him. “Get me a marker.”
Yoongi quickly grabs a marker from his desk and hands it over to him.
“So, what should I write?” Jungkook pops the marker open.
“Write what you feel like you should say.”
Jungkook takes a deep breath. This is a huge step for him, it means potentially meeting up with his soulmate, who he’s basically ignored for the past two years. He doesn’t even know what they look like, if it’s a girl or a boy. He’ll have to explain everything.
This is it, now or never. He pulls up his left sleeve, and writes.
I’m sorry. I'm ready now, if you still want to meet.
He stares at his arm for a moment, before putting the cap on the marker and puts it on the bed.
Sitting in front of him, Yoongi is looking at him with wide eyes.
“It’s done.”
Yoongi pulls up his sleeves. For a moment, Jungkook is confused, and then he sees the words written on Yoongi’s arms. His words.
Jungkook’s face drains of colour, suddenly overwhelmed by dizziness.
“It’s you?” He can barely speak, he’s in shock. “You’re my soulmate?” Jungkook near whispers, grabbing Yoongi's arm and looking at his own words on Yoongi’s skin, and then at his face, in disbelief.
Yoongi bites his lip, and nods.
Oh my god, is he dreaming? Could he really come up with something like this in a dream?
“Am I dreaming?” Jungkook is so lost. “Are you serious? How did this happen?”
“This isn't a dream,” Yoongi reaches out to hug him, but hesitates. His eyes are glistening with tears. “It’s really me, I’m your soulmate.”
Jungkook bursts into tears, almost throwing himself into Yoongi’s arms. This is real, this is happening.
“Oh my god, I'm so sorry I made you wait for so long, Hyung,” He hiccups. “I didn't mean to hurt you, I was just so scared-”
“Shh, it's okay, Kookie. I know. I know, and I understand why you did it.” Yoongi pats his hair soothingly.
Jungkook can feel wetness seeping through his shirt on his shoulder. Yoongi is crying.
“I’m so, so, truly, deeply sorry,” He mumbles “Aren't you mad at me?”
“I could never be mad at you. Not in a million years.”
They stay like that for what seems like an age.
“How did you know?” Jungkook asks, when he finally pulls away. Not too far.
“Remember that time your pen leaked all over your hands at work?” Yoongi says, leaning back to wipe at Jungkook’s tears. “I got home and took my gloves off, and my hands were blue all over.”
“I can’t put into words how glad I am that it’s you. I was feeling so guilty all this time for liking someone that wasn’t my soulmate,” Jungkook leans into Yoongi’s touch. He never thought that he would have this chance.
Yoongi chokes. “You… all this time?”
“I’ve wanted you for a long time, Hyung. Maybe not since the moment we met, but I had a crush on you pretty quickly, and then it was… more than a crush,” He laughs wetly. “I thought you didn’t want me back, you were so insistent on me contacting my soulmate.”
Yoongi laughs, ducking his head into Jungkook’s shoulder. They’re still tangled together; it puts Jungkook’s soul in a state of rest, with this contact that he didn’t know he needed so badly. Yoongi looks up to see his face, and they’re very close.
“Jungkook…” Yoongi speaks softly, like they’re in a bubble he doesn’t want to pop, “Can I kiss you now?”
Jungkook grips Yoongi’s sweater tightly. He wants to say yes, but he doesn’t know if his heart can take the stress. It’s already beating so hard at Yoongi being so close. He has goosebumps.
Yoongi leans in, and Jungkook shivers a little. His hyung pauses, and Jungkook can feel his breath on his face. Yoongi’s eyes are so pretty.
Closing the distance, Yoongi gives him an eskimo kiss, rubbing their noses together gently. Jungkook is startled into a giggle.
“You have to say yes,” Yoongi murmurs affectionately. Jungkook whines.
“Yes. Hyung, I want you to kiss me. Please do it now,” He pouts, and Yoongi gives him a gummy smile, so much joy in his eyes, before leaning in to kiss him for real.
Sighing, Jungkook wraps his arms around Yoongi’s neck, tilting his head. It feels so right, so natural. Keeping the kiss gentle, Yoongi runs his hands lightly up and down Jungkook’s sides, tickling him. Jungkook has to break off to laugh breathlessly. His face is pink, so he hides it in Yoongi’s neck.
“Thank you for not giving up on me, Hyung.”
-- Epilogue --
That summer, Jungkook and Yoongi make a trip to Busan to meet Jungkook’s parents. They take the train, and Jungkook falls asleep on Yoongi’s shoulder.
“Kookie, wake up,” Yoongi calls him, gently shaking him. “We’ve arrived.”
They get their things and leave the train station. Jungkook hails a taxi and gives the driver the address to his house. When they get there, Yoongi pays while Jungkook gets the bags. As they walk along the path to Jungkook’s home together, Jungkook notices that Yoongi is very quiet, and has a small crease between his brows. Before Jungkook starts knocking, he feels Yoongi’s hand on his arm.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” Yoongi nods. “I'm just a little bit nervous is all. This is a pretty big deal,” He chuckles, but Jungkook can see through his facade. Yoongi really is on edge.
“They’re going to love you, don’t worry.”
Jungkook knocks on the door. A few seconds later, Jungkook’s eomma opens it, and immediately pulls her son into a hug.
“Gukkie! Welcome home, sweetie,” Yoongi stands awkwardly, and when Jungkook pulls away from his eomma and takes his hand, he notices that Yoongi’s palms are sweating. Cute.
“So this is Yoongi? He’s very handsome, Gukkie, I can see why you were pining for him,” She jokes, and he gasps as if he hadn’t been doing just that three months earlier.
“Eomma!”
She laughs, and pulls Yoongi into a hug. He blinks at Jungkook over her shoulder. When she pulls away, she takes Yoongi’s face in her hands and looks at him.
Jungkook clears his throat. “Eomma, can we do this inside? He’s not going to get any less pretty, you know.”
Yoongi pouts, and his eomma laughs again. “Come in, come in.”
They enter the house, and Jungkook leads them upstairs with their bags. Jungkook’s old room is small, but the walls are covered in his drawings. Yoongi smiles as he looks at them; Jungkook guesses that he’s remembering the ones he once had on his own skin, drawn by a much younger Jungkook. Jungkook’s drawings now are much more advanced as his skills have grown rapidly, and the designs Yoongi ends up with now are much more intricate and beautiful. Often, Jungkook will draw on his skin directly, just to see it appear on his own - when asked, he would just say that Yoongi’s skin was a prettier canvas, so Yoongi should just let him use it. Yoongi never said no.
They come downstairs and Yoongi meets the rest of his family, Jungkook’s appa and his imo. They have lunch, and Jungkook properly introduces Yoongi to everyone individually. After eating and helping out with the dishes, they leave for a walk in the city.
They are walking side by side, and sometimes their fingers touch; Yoongi doesn't speak, but he reaches for Jungkook’s hand. When Jungkook looks over, he sees that Yoongi has turned pink. He squeezes his fingers. It’s good to know that Yoongi still feels some kind of butterflies during public displays of affection - Jungkook would hate for the feeling to be one sided. They pass an ice cream shop and Jungkook pulls Yoongi inside.
“I'm glad my aunt has gotten so much better,” Jungkook says while they are on the line, still holding Yoongi’s hand. “I know she still misses imobu a lot, but I’m glad she found her strength again. She’s really important to me.”
“I’m happy for her too, Kookie. She seems lovely.” Yoongi pulls him a little closer.
Yoongi gets strawberry flavored ice cream, while Jungkook gets the mint-chocolate flavored one. They sit on a bench, enjoying the gentle breeze. It’s calm until suddenly Yoongi bursts out laughing.
“Ah, you got some ice cream in the tip of your nose,” Yoongi says, grinning widely.
“I have?” Jungkook says, lifting his hand to wipe at his face. “Where? Did I get it?”
“Let me get it,” Yoongi leans and kisses off the pink smudge. Jungkook wrinkles his nose.
“Hyung!”
Yoongi giggles and sits back to concentrate on his dessert again, so Jungkook decides on a sneak attack, leaning forward and kissing him on the cheek.
‘If you just got ice cream on my face, I swear to god.”
Jungkook smirks. “What will you do, Hyung?”
Yoongi, blank faced, puts a finger in his ice cream, and smears it down Jungkook’s face.
He splutters, before responding in kind. Soon they are both covered in ice cream, and Yoongi groans.
“Jungkook! Stop! It’s all over my sweater. I have to walk around like this!”
Jungkook just leans in to kiss away his pout, laughing and probably smearing the mess even more. Yoongi kisses back for a moment, but then shoves Jungkook on the shoulder.
“Come on, I can’t meet your friends like this. I’m stealing one of your sweaters.”
Jungkook just takes his hand again, smiling. “You’re acting like I don’t love it when you wear my clothes, Hyung.”
(One time, Yoongi spilled soda all over his clothes at Jungkook’s place and Jungkook had to lend him one of his oversized sweaters.
“Hey, it looks pretty nice,” Jungkook looks at Yoongi appreciatively, who’s looking in the mirror.
“It's very fluffy. To be honest, I didn't think it would fit me.”
Yoongi smiles back and gives him a little punch on his arm.
“You look cute in it, Hyung, you should try wearing them more often.”)
--
When they get to Jimin’s apartment after Yoongi changes, Jungkook knocks and the door bursts open.
“Jungkookiee!” A boy flies at Jungkook, and they almost fall over. The boy has honey blond hair, and is the same height as Jungkook.
“Taehyung, I missed you so much.”
Inside the apartment, Jungkook can see Jimin looking at them with a smile on his face. He has light pink hair, different to how he remembers. Jungkook introduces them to Yoongi whilst Taehyung continues to cling to him. Eventually Jimin pulls them both inside.
They have dinner, and talk for a long time. They talk about the fight, and how Jimin and Taehyung managed to recover their relationship afterwards.
“After Taehyung moved away, I felt a huge emptiness on my chest. I tried to ignore it for the longest time. I broke up with my now ex-boyfriend soon after he went back to Daegu, but I couldn't bring myself to write to Tae. I was such an asshole, I thought he would never want to talk to me again,” Jimin says, holding Taehyung’s hand. “That went on for a pretty long time. Until one night, his birthday, I had a nightmare of him getting in an accident. I woke up in cold sweat, panicking, and rushed over to write something.”
Jungkook could see the way Jimin looked at Taehyung, with so much kindness and love. He feels relieved that his friend is now with his soulmate, looking better than ever.
It’s 9PM when they leave Tae and Jimin’s apartment. Jungkook says goodbye to his friend, and wishes him all the happiness in the world.
“Visit us more in the future, Jungkookie,” Tae hugs him tight.
“I will, Tae.”

“Hey, before we go back, can we go to the beach?” Jungkook asks as they walk home.
“Sure.”
The beach is deserted except for Yoongi and Jungkook. The moon shines brightly on the sky to light their way. They walk on the beachfront for a while, then stop to sit on some rocks.
Jungkook closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, feeling the wind coming from the sea brushing his face. He thinks again about the way Jimin looked at Tae.
He opens his eyes, only to find Yoongi looking at him in the exact same way. That’s the moment Jungkook realises. I love you , he thinks.
“What?” He hears Yoongi speaking to him.
Jungkook turns to look at Yoongi properly. The moonlight is bathing his face in a silver glow, and he looks beautiful. Jungkook takes his hand, tangling their fingers.
“I love you, Yoongi.”
Yoongi’s eyes are glassy. Jungkook did always think his eyes were the prettiest. He takes a moment to capture the expression on Yoongi’s face for a future drawing - caught between mild surprise, adoration, and happiness.
“I love you too, Jungkook.”
Everyone assumes that they’ll find their soulmate when they turn eighteen, and then they’ll spend the rest of their lives together. But not all soulmates have their happiness right away. Nobody talks about those who don’t find their soulmate. Your soulmate could already be with someone; your soulmate could be working abroad; your soulmate could be scared of getting hurt; your soulmate can even be the best friend you had your whole life. You will never know. But the one thing Jungkook learned about soulmates is that it might not be the way you expect it to be at first, but in the end, everything will be okay.
