Their relationship is a secret. It’s the passionate kisses behind doors and burning touches underneath bridges. It’s not like their houses prevent them from being in such an intimate relationship but it was because of the fact that they were of the same gender. It was considered a taboo even in the wizardly world to be in a relationship with someone of the same gender. But the threats of being expelled, disowned and shamed upon by their parents was not enough to stop them from sneaking out their dorms and meeting each other for desperate kisses behind cobblestone walls where not even moving paintings can witness their crime. But it was starting to get tiring as day by day they have to endure the pain of being apart from each other. Night by night, sneaking out became more of a challenge as professors monitor the hallways in an attempt to catch loitering students. It was getting harder to endure until one day, the Slytherin suggests the idea of running away.
“I just can’t handle it anymore,” Yoongi shakes his head, shivering in the arms of his lover. It was late at night and they managed to sneak out into the forest after Hoseok insisted they should. It was a bit risky trying to sneak outside past their curfew but they succeeded. “Yoongi, you know we can’t,” Hoseok says, wrapping his arms tighter around the older man in an attempt to keep him warm, guiding Yoongi’s head towards the warmth of his chest. They both have goals, dreams of pursuing magic but they didn’t know they would have to go choose between magic and being together.
“Sneaking out at night, pretending I don’t know you in the morning,” Yoongi clenches his jaw, his voice wavering. He doesn’t know if it the prickling cold or tears threatening to escape his tired eyes. “Aren’t you tired, Hoseok?” he snaps his head up, tears finally rolling down his cheeks at the sight of his lover’s worried and hesitant expression. Hoseok once said he’ll always be with him that no matter what crime Yoongi committed, he’ll always choose his side. But right now, Hoseok looks unsure and Yoongi is afraid to lose him.
“I am tired, Yoongi, as much as you are but we can’t just abandon our duties as a student,” Hoseok cups Yoongi’s flushed cheeks and brushes away the unwanted tears with the calloused pads of his thumbs. Even in distress and tears, Yoongi still looks so beautiful and absolutely ethereal especially with the moonlight highlighting his features; tousled hair, fox-like eyes, button nose and plump, pink lips that curve into a pout with every tiny sob. It was a heartbreaking sight but he loves it, loves how vulnerable Yoongi is around him. How Yoongi would strip himself down to his true colors that only Hoseok was allowed to see. He promised Yoongi the world, but right now, Yoongi is asking for his world and he can’t find it in him to give it.
“Don’t you love me?” Yoongi asks as his small shoulders jerk with another broken sob and Hoseok’s chest constricts painfully. “Baby, of course, I do,” he kisses the tip of Yoongi’s nose, watching it scrunch up cutely. “Then run away with me,” Yoongi says desperately, palms pressing flat against Hoseok’s broad chest. “We don’t have to sneak around anymore. We can find a home, we can be together,” Waking up next to each other had always been Yoongi’s dream. He wonders what Hoseok would look like in deep sleep or what his voice would sound like first thing in the morning. He dreams of cooking breakfast and waking Hoseok up only to be dragged back down under the covers with him. But all those domestic fantasies vanished when Hoseok sighs, looks away with a shake of his head.
“I’m sorry, Yoongi,” Hoseok says and the tears blur Yoongi’s eyes. “Wrong answer,” Yoongi’s pulling away. Hoseok didn’t even protest, didn’t even stop the older man even as he walks away with tiny sobs that faint away until Hoseok is left alone in the forest to think about what he had done.
It isn't like he didn't want to make Yoongi happy but abandoning everything when they're still so young sounds a bit selfish. But then again he'd be lying if he said he didn't wish for a world where he can hold the older man in his arms without any fear of being caught and expelled.
But that world is far beyond his dreams and even in this world where dragons and pixie dust exist, not everything is meant to be magic.
