Chapter Text

"so how long do you plan on staying single?"
Yup. Saw that question coming a mile away. No matter where you go you can't seem to escape that one stubborn phrase. Whether it be on a casual lunch date with your girlfriend's, or your family's annual reunion, you can always count on someone bringing it up.
Its always the same scenario when they ask too. They smile and laugh like everything is fine and dandy and out of nowhere they lower their voice and lean in real close until finally WHOOP there it is, they ask it as they "jokingly" nudge your shoulder.
So when you come back home after a day out with your friend who asks you the same exact question you don't want to hear, your just about ready to give up.
" but y/n, why haven't you found someone yet? Why are you so determined to be alone your whole life?!" She asks you with concern in her voice. You cross your arms and sigh and say
"I told you already, it's too much work trying to find someone to date. The flirting, the akward first dates, and not to mention the amount of douchy fuckboys just trying to get in your pants; it's all stupid. It's just not for me"
You lied. You actually just have never had any luck when it came to dating. No matter how much effort you put in, it never works out in the end. So now you've been reduced to lying and saying you chose to be single in order to protect what little pride you have left.
"Well not everyone out there is bad," your friend tried to reason with you to try and change your mind.
"I mean just look at my boyfriend! He's kind and sweet, and we're so hakppy together!" Your friend says with passion filled eyes.
You bite your lip and take a deep breath to calm yourself down. You love your friend and you know she is just trying to help, but the sound of her lovey dovey couple life compared to your sad lonely one was only making things worse. You had to physically bite your tongue to stop yourself from saying something you might regret later.
"I'm glad that your both happy together, really I am. But that's not what I want right now. I want to be independent and live the life I want to, I don't need some man that I need to tend to 24/7." You say confidently. You smile cheekily and add on,
"If I wanted that I would have just gotten a dog."
Your friend sighs defeatedly and rolls her eyes. She raises her hand to wave down a waiter to bring over the check for your meal and says to you dramatically,
"I swear, your probably the only 21 year old woman on the planet I know that doesn't want to find someone to love."
You smile back jokingly but inside her words did sting just a bit. Of course you wanted to find someone, but it felt like fate had already decided otherwise.
After you say goodbye and pay the check, you drive back home on your own. You fumble with your keys outside your door and rejoice when you finally find the right one and unlock it. You trudge inside carrying your purse on one shoulder and your coat on the other. You immediately kick off your heels and a sigh of relief escapes your mouth.
You turn on the lights and head upstairs to put down your things and change clothes. After washing up and changing, you head back downstairs and hop on the couch in your living room and turn on the TV. It was such a stressful day that you decided watching a movie might be a good way to relax a little. You turn on Netflix and scroll right to the romantic comedies.
As ironic as it is, romance movies are your favorite. Although you act rigid and cold in front of others when they talk about relationships, your a hopeless romantic that can't get enough of a clićhe sappy love story. You promptly pick one of your favorites and cozy up under a warm blanket as the movie plays.
A little ways into the movie though a strange sound catches your attention. You try to pass it off as something random and ignore it but when the sound persists and becomes even louder, you worry.
You sit up and pause the movie to try and listen for the sound once more. Sure enough you hear what sounded almost like a whine coming from what sounded like your front door. You move the blanket off your lap and slowly make your way to the door. You grab the handle and turn it to peek outside.
You look out only to find absolutely no one there. You look around and search for the source of the sound but can't find anything. You shrug and are about to close the door to head back inside when your startled by the same whine once more, only this time it's coming from below you. You turn back around and look down and are shocked at what you see.
You gasp as you see a small puppy curled up on your doorstep.
It's one of the smallest puppy's you've ever seen, with brown floppy ears along with black and white patches of fur covering its body.
The puppy whines loudly again and you knelt down to see what was wrong. Upon further inspection you see that the puppy had a rather big gash across the bottom of one of its paws. You feel sorry for the little pup and carefully scoop him up from the ground in your arms. The poor thing is shivering and you quickly head back inside the house.
You quickly make your way over to the bathroom and grab a towel to wrap the puppy in to keep it warm. You then look in the cabinets above your sink to find some first aid supplies like bandages and disinfectant. You gently place the puppy down next to the sink and open the bottle of disinfectant. Then ever so carefully you reach out for the puppy’s paw and slowly start to clean the wound. The puppy whined out loudly in pain and you tried to speak softly to calm him down.
“Shh i know it hurts, but it will be over soon...”
You finish cleaning the cut and start wrapping the bandages around the puppy’s paw, not too tight but just enough to stop the bleeding. After you finish wrapping the wound, the puppy seemed to have calmed down and stopped shaking. You smile and carry him upstairs to your room.
You walk over to your bed and gently set the pup down on one of the pillows. He snuggles up under one of your blankets and looks like he’s finally able to relax.
You smile and pet his head softly, trying to help coax him to sleep.
As you pet him though, you see something around the puppys neck that you hadn't noticed earlier. In your haste you neglected to notice the blue collar, or what was left of it, around it’s neck. You lean down and read the tag on his collar that says
#5
“JM”
“JM?” You say to yourself a little confused. What did those letters stand for, Was that maybe the puppy’s name? And what did the #5 mean? You pondered these questions in your head for a while until you became tired and decided to it was best to just figure it out in the morning.
“I’m sure the owner will have noticed their puppy went missing by the morning. I shouldn’t worry too much.” You reasoned with yourself and climbed onto your side of the bed. You looked at the cute peaceful face of the puppy who was now fast asleep and smiled as you drifted off to sleep as well.
...
The warmth of the sunlight on your face as the first thing to wake you up. The light was bright and shone directly towards your eyes. You groaned, not wanting to wake up just yet, and turned over to your other side. Your warm and comfortable under your blankets, ready to fall asleep once more when you feel a tickle on your nose.
You scrunch your nose and wave your hand lazily in front of your face and the tickling stops. But soon after you hear a strange sound. It sounded almost like... someone sniffing? You furrow your eyebrows and slowly rub your eyes as you open them to see what the strange sound was. When your vision is clear and you finally see what it is, you swear the scream you let probably could have been heard across the whole block.
There was a man with dark brown hair and big brown eyes lying next to you staring right back at you with a blank look on his face. You screamed in shock and jumped out of bed so fast you almost tripped over yourself. You quickly grabbed the nearest pillow off your bed and held it in front of your body like a makeshift shield.
The man must have been startled as well since he looked like he fell off the bed as well and onto the floor, wrapped up in all of your blankets and sheets. He looked extremely confused and frightened, which was surprising to you since he was the one intruding in your house. You take a defensive stance and hold your pillow up as confidently as you can and yell
“W-who are you and and are you doing in my house?!!”
The man just looked back at you with an even more frightened look on his face and he quickly put his head down and covered his ears with his hands.
“Don’t ignore me! Answer me!” You yelled from the other side of the bed, still determined to stand your ground. The boy just stayed quiet in his huddled position, you may have even heard a whimper or two come from him.
Felling like you were being messed with, you take action and angrily move over to the side of the bed where the intruder was and raise your pillow up in the air.
“quit acting scared and answer me or I swear I-“ you yell when you suddenly notice something on the man and freeze mid sentence.
You notice something blue around the mans neck.
You lower your pillow and look closer. Your curious now and you call out to the man once more, but this time a little bit calmer than before.
“Hey... look over here” you say
The man is hesitant at first but slowly he turns to look at you, hands still covering his ears and a quivering bottom lip showing how truly frightened he was.
You carefully move closer and look at what’s around his neck.
#5
“JM”
It takes you a moment before you put two and two together and you gasp in surprise. You stumble backwards in shock and end up falling backwards onto the floor. Your mouth gaped open, you somehow manage out a few words.
“No...fucking...way....”
You didn’t know it yet but this was only the beginning of your ruff predicament.
