This masterpiece will tear us apart

Work Text:

Kenta sighed as he sat on his bay window, his head softly hitting the glass. The people of his father's kingdom scurried around the village, fulfilling their daily lives. He didn't necessarily want to be one of them, but he felt like if he wasn't born into the life he was, he may be happier. He felt like he didn't have much of a purpose in the life he currently led. His brother, Taehyung, was a very bubbly boy, and he was always out being the mischievous younger boy that he was. Kenta was the older of the two brothers, and his parents expected much more of him than they did of Taehyung. He needed to set an example for how his brother should rule when he finds a princess for himself. He needed to be strong for his people, and for his family, but he never felt very princely. Kenta was always being told how he radiated prince-like qualities, especially his looks. He thought otherwise. He thought he was selfish and privileged, and that more of the village should share his wealth. Their kingdom wasn't poor in any way, but not everyone got to live as lavishly as him and his family did. He was brought breakfast in bed every morning, he was pampered and prepped every day with skin care, clothing, and makeup, and he was served more food for dinner than he could ever dream of consuming. That kind of decision was up to his father and mother, though, and he knew he'd never be able to convince them to share their fortune. He heard a knock on his door, and his favorite dressingmaid entered the room. She had a bright smile on her face and bowed when she saw him. The prince smiled and nodded in return, and they began small talk as she picked through his expensive clothing for something that would suit his day. Once she had selected an outfit, she left the room for Kenta to change, but as soon as the door closed behind her, she slid down it in exasperation. She knew she could never have the prince, but still, every time she had the honor of speaking with him, her heart fluttered in a way it never had before.
