Work Text:
She slowly climbs up the hill. Powder on her legs was long gone and agate spirals answered orange glare of the Sun with their own red sparkles. Her hair she cut short now dancing in the wind, refracting darkening skies, giving them a greenish tint. Gold in her arms is the same as gold of wheat surrounding her.
- Cinnabar.
She speaks in a soft voice. Her words are almost being consumed by the wind. But she knows for sure – they will reach the ears they’re destined. At a moment’s notice, a beautiful sparkling red hair emerges from across the cliff. Cinnabar’s sight was jumping all around the scene just to avoid meeting Phos’ eyes.
- What do you want from me?
Red-headed soft crystal spoke with a mixture of anger, annoyance and, perhaps, something else. Something way more gentle and way less common for Cinnabar. But she didn’t get an appropriate answer. Phos who thought of this moment so many times by now, just stands stunned now. Her stoned lips unable to move, unable to tell everything she has to.
- Is this all? You came to just make fun of me? – red-headed gem starts to lose herself. Her perfect posture is broken and shoulders shudder. – You came once again to ensure in my solitude? See it! Look around! How many friends are here!? Exactly! None! And you, who told me those sweet words and did nothing! You are cruel, Phosphophyllite...
Cinnabar’s last words are lost to the darkness. They barely reach non-moving Phos. Green-haired crystal’s eyes run with gold. She slowly reaches her hand towards the place where the other gem stood moments ago, only to touch the air.
- Sh-Shinsha! – the first word her mouth could produce. – where are you!?
Of course she got no answer. Phos’ head is full of messy thoughts. She runs as fast as her legs allow jumping down the rocks and leaving shards of herself all over this narrow path. A path that leads to Cinnabar’s grotto. Phos tried calling her again but to no avail.
- Stop! Go away, now! – hysterical cry reached her ears as she approached the cave Shinsha dwelled. But she didn’t have a chance to see her as the entrance was blocked by a wall of pure mercury. – Leave me alone! From now and forever on... Do not dare approach me!
- I will. – Phos’ weak voice barely broke through the poisonous curtain.
- Thanks for your understanding! – Silent cry came as an answer.
- I will dare to approach you! – were the last words Phos said before jumping right into the silver-ish sea standing upright. Enormous pressure was pushing her backwards as if Cinnabar has been adding more and more material into her last shield. Her last wall not yet breached. Cinnabar knew that everything Phos said was just a sweet lie. Or maybe the young gem pitied her. The last thought was especially disgusting for her. That green hair now became a single most hated thing in the whole known for red crystal world.
- It’s f-fine... Let it all... Out on me. – a sound barely resembling words dragged Cinnabar out of her trance. A mercury she formed no longer was a wall. More like several savage streams forming a whirlpool of death. And at it’s very center was someone. Someone wearing torn clothes. Someone whose body missed some large chunks and instead of powder’s beige was the color of pain, namely a mix of pitch-black and crimson topped with silver-ish glitter.
- Why!? Why do you... – Shinsha was silenced by approaching Phos. There was nothing green left on her body and even golden hands now are snow-white. Barely distinguishable smile was on her face.
- Thanks for showing me how tough it was for you. – Phos spoke in a soft warming voice. – I never really understood it to this extent until today.
Cinnabar could say nothing. The corners of her eyes filled with silver poison, however unlike all the times it happened before, a white hand reached to her cheeks and wiped them off.
- Why did you do this? You know it’s poisonous for your body! – sobbing red-head asked, still avoiding Phos’ eyes.
- Because I love you. – these words echoed all around the cave several times and each of the echo reflections stuck in Cinnabar’s soul more and more. She saw half-liquid fingers gently grab her by the chin and make her look right into their owner’s eyes. Phos reached out and pressed her lips gently against Cinnabar’s ones. After the initial shock, redhead shut her eyelids and answered the kiss. She put her hands around her loved one’s waist to embrace her and pull her closer, but the very next moment she heard an unpleasant shattering sound. That sweet sensation from her lips was gone. She opened her eyes only to find herself surrounded by light-green and black fragments, drowning in a white pool. Cinnabar collapsed to her knees.

Red-headed gem sits in her cave, looking at the Sun’s last rays to reach Earth today. An ocean so wide and deep she couldn’t even comprehend surrounds her small habitat leaving orange because of the sunset foam all around the floor.
- Shinsha! Mind if I move in? – a playful, almost laughing voice interrupts her scenery admiring session. She turns her head, hair gracefully moving by the wind towards the voice’s owner.
- Only if you quit calling me like that! – she said watching as light green hair disappears in the cave. A faint smile bends her lips.
