Chapter Text

It was January, and the weather was at it's worse. A snowstorm was sweeping through London, covering it with layers upon layers of snow. No service had been held in Dio's church for two weeks because of the storm; people could barely get out of the house to buy essentials. As an effect he was suffering from boredom. Sure Jonathan was there most of the time, but he still had to go out at night to feed, leaving Dio alone for hours. It was because of this boredom that he almost thought that the sound of a baby crying was the work of his cabin fever riddled brain.

"What the hell?"

He followed the noise to the front doors of the church, and cracked them open just enough to look out. On the top of the steps leading up to the doors was a basket. It was closed, but the cries were definitely coming from inside.

"For God's sake...." Dio grumbled. He opened the door a bit more so that he could bring the basket in.

"What kind of idiot leaves a baby outside in a storm like this?"

He didn't open the basket until he got it in front of the fireplace. When he did open it up, he indeed found an infant, all swaddle up in multiple blankets. Dio took the infant out of the basket and placed it on the rug in front of the fireplace. After a few moment the child seemed to get warmed up and it stopped crying and went to sleep.

He couldn't take the baby to the orphanage in the storm, so he would have to take care of it until the weather cleared up. He sighed as he sat down next to the child with a book to pass the time. After about an hour though Dio grew tired.

"What am I supposed to do with you while I sleep? It's too cold to leave you in the basket, even in here, and if I leave you here you could get too warm."

*sigh*

"I guess you'll have to share my bed"

Dio changed into his night clothes and then carried the infant to bed. He placed the child down on the sheets and then layed down next to it, pulling the covers over both of them.

"I'm only doing this so you don't freeze, got it?"

I am going crazy, talking to a baby like it can understand me

"Goodmorning Dio!"

Dio awoke to the sound of a cheery Incubus. This was normal but usually they were in bed together. At the moment he was standing next to the bed, on the side that Dio's back was to.

"Where have you been?" Dio asked, not moving from the position he had been sleeping in.

"Sorry about that, I know you like me to get home before morning, but I was afraid my client was going to freeze to death!"

Freeze to death……..

Oh fuck right

Dio remembered the infant he had found the previous night. He also realised he was curled around it, holding it against g is chest protectively. He must have done it in his sleep, because he definitely didn't do it consciously.

"Jonathan...." Dio said, still not frozen in place. "There's something important you should know about....."

"What is it?"

Dio rolled over, sat up, and held the child out to Jonathan.

"I found this on our doorstep. It's going to have to stay here until the storm passes and I can take it to the orphanage"

"A BABY!??!?!?"

Jonathan started wagging his tail. He began to reach for the infant but then stopped himself.

"AND YOU WERE CUDDLING IT!?!??! DIO THAT'S SO SWEET!!!!!"

"I was 'cuddling' it so that it would freeze. Can you stop yelling please?"

Just like, that, the infant started crying.

"Oh god"

Jonathan's nose wrinkled.

"I think he needs his diaper changed."

"One of the mother's accidentally left some baby stuff among the pews. I couldn't get it back to her before the storm hit, and I'm sure she wouldn't mind us using it for an orphan. Got get it, I'll find a suitable place to change it."

Once Jonathan brought back the bag of baby supplies, Dio set to work changing the infant's diaper, and in the process found out that the baby was a boy.

"We need to come up with a name for him."

"What?"

"We can't just call him 'the baby'"

Dio knew Jonathan was right. He thought for a moment.

"Giorno."

"What?"

"I think it's the name of a fancy Italian accessory brand. Or a clothes brand. Either way it's a decent name."

"......I like it!" Jonathan said finally. "How do you spell that?"

"G-I-O-R-N-O I believe."

"We can call him Gio for short!"

"We can't get to attached, he's going to the orphanage as soon as the storm passes."

"Oh......"

"Well we can't take care of him. Look at us."

"Maybe you're right...."

"Now come on, we have to make breakfast for us, and mix up some formula for Giorno."

"I'll make pancakes!"

"...........Fine."
