Chapter 1: Thwarted Rescue

Chapter Text

Because he thought she needed saving when she was thrown into the sky by the Raze gang.

He swore under his breath as the carnival was ransacked and he lost sight of Collin and Little, witnessed what he thought was a civilian being thrown from the swinging ride.

He moved to change quickly as he saw her body lurch in the air towards a Raze, who’d no doubt throw her into the ground. A fall from that height would have killed her. And in the midst of his changing, he threw twin batarangs to stop the goon from reaching her. He knew they twist in the air, cut the sky and swing back the gang member, holding him off in the meantime.

Just as he finishes changing he moves to try and find an angle that would allow him to reach her. And while she’s up he doesn’t have much time and makes a hasty decision to try and catch her daringly low. Setting up the grapple, swinging over and launching himself into the air Daman position himself to catch the girl.

But then he witnesses the batarangs disintegrate as they boomerang back around to the raze member. All he saw was a spark of purple, that turned into burning energy, surround the girl.

He felt himself drop out of the air and notes that the jump was burned as it snapped back, heard Batgirl and Abuse flank his sides as he landed.

Together they witnessed the glowing energy fly apart and send the Raze member into the ground and in the middle of cackling energy, was the girl Damian thought needed saving.

Watched as she stayed in the air, noted that she was flying and then that she was fighting. She was an Outsider, in Bludhaven. He ordered his team to take action, he’d let her take out the goons in the sky, he and his team could handle the ones terrorizing the carnival. He would have to talk to her later, this wasn’t her territory.

In the midst of the fighting, he notes that the Raze gang had grown significantly, and in spite of the numbers were still reckless and dangerous but he notes the members seem younger. All in signature fire affiliated powers. Just as he feels heat collecting at his side, he settles for taking the blast with his cape when the boy who would have blasted him gets taken out. And out of the corner of his eye, he notes the quick movements of another person, someone he doesn’t know, helping. Just as Robin is about to bite out an order to leave

A lanky blond, dressed in civilian clothes swung a disfigured arm into the ground and ripped a ridge between them and the gang members. The concrete then rising and creating a wall for cover.

Damian was short of demanding who the hell this guy was when the blond yells what he assumes is the flying girl’s name.

He gave a loud whistle, and yelled “Mari!’”

And in the moment Damian hears a whizz and suddenly there was hot air blowing past him and he tuned in time to see cackling purple fire coming out of this strange girl’s hair. He also notes that his arm is burning. The skin feels heated even under the Nomex. And he shifts and notes that it hurts to be around her as he watches how his teammates shift away from the heat she’s radiating.

“You're Outsiders,” Batgirl notes, and Damian witnesses the knowing smiles exchanged between Abuse and the two Outsiders.

“Yeah, but I think the Raze gang should be our priority”

And much more quickly and efficiently than he thought possible, they make a rough plan and work to stop the gang much more efficiently than he thought they would with the strangers.

When it all settles, the outsiders do what they’re known for. Disappearing into flames.

They don’t even give him a chance to question them. All he knows is that her name is Mar’i and boy’s names is Cat. They could be aliases, he thinks, but he has the distinct feeling they’re not.

Later when he gets home, he notes the reddened burned area on his forearm, probably a 1st degree but bordering 2nd degree. Either way, he’s going to mad if it scars over because she didn’t even touch him and they didn't even battle and that is insulting.
