Work Text:

A huff of frustration. The sound of paper tearing under the increasingly hard pressure of a pen. Harsh clacks of a keyboard and mouse. Another irritated sigh. Such are the sounds of an overworked Min Yoongi; an auditory collection that Park Jimin has come to know all too well.

He’s slumped on the floor of the hall outside Yoongi’s private office- has been for fifteen minutes since he finished up his practice in the dance studio down the hall. He listens carefully, and when the third groan borders on exhausted rage rather than mildly annoyed, he rises to his feet. Checks the time (3:52am; both boys have to be up at seven tomorrow and wow, they should really stop doing this to themselves) and stretches, tucks his phone into his back pocket.

“Hyung?” he calls gently as he knocks, opens the door enough to peek his head around the corner. Yoongi doesn’t look up from his place at his desk, silhouette illuminated by the harsh light of his monitors where he’s bent over his notebook. Despite the poor lighting, Jimin can see his knee shaking from across the room.

“Yoongi-hyung,” he calls softly again, wanders a little further into the room, careful not to step too suddenly.

“Hmm?” Yoongi hums back this time, but still doesn’t look away from his notes. His headphones are pulled down around his neck and Jimin can faintly hear the pulse of a bass-heavy melody working its way through the speakers.

“It’s getting late,” he says, coming the stand just behind the elder boy. “Don’t you think you’ve gotten enough done tonight?” he presses a hand on Yoongi’s shoulder and rubs gently.

Yoongi relaxes under the touch immediately, but sighs and loosely gestures at the monitor, “I’m halfway through the chorus progression and something is off. I can’t seem to figure out what it is, but I think it has something to do with-”

“Hyung?” Jimin interrupts.

“-the tone of the…” he realizes Jimin is staring at him and finally, looks up at the other. His eyes are becoming visibly bloodshot and there’s a smear of forgotten eyeliner that blends easily into the dark circles forming along his undereye. “What?”

“It’s four o’clock in the morning, hyung; don’t you think it’s time to head out?”

Yoongi looks glances back at the monitor longingly and then back down to his notebook, hands finding their way to fiddle guiltily at his headphones. “I haven’t finished yet though and if I don’t get something done-”

“What have you finished today?”

Yoongi rotates his chair back around to click through a few screens and pulls his bottom lip into his mouth between his teeth, “I finished the rough for a few verses I’d been working on, started writing something for our next comeback, and then there’s this monstrosity. But like I said,” he huffs, pulls his hat off to run a hand through his hair and pull his bangs back under the security of the cap, “I haven’t been able to get past this part…

“Hyung,” Jimin says, and runs his hand up along Yoongi’s arm, squeezing gently when he reaches the divot between his neck and shoulder, “you’ve worked hard. Let’s go home.”

Their journey back to the dorms is uneventful and when they arrive all of the lights are out; the bedroom doors drawn closed to shut out noise and prying eyes alike. It’s silent, the gentle rumble of Namjoon snoring away in the other room the only present noise through the dorm.

Together they stumble through taking off their shoes, wandering cautiously through the darkened halls until they manage to stumble into bed, shedding clothing as they go. Under the covers, Jimin presses his head to Yoongi's chest and listens to his heartbeat. Like the demo coursing through Yoongi's headphones earlier, it keeps steady time and pounds deep in Jimin's bones, but its no contest to Jimin which one is his favourite song.

The sound nearly lulls Jimin to sleep: the calm and quiet of both boys breathing steadily, wrapped up in one another under the cover of the blackness of the night. And then-

“Jimin?” Yoongi says suddenly, a little uncertain.

“Yes, hyung?”

“Thank you,” he says. I love you , he doesn’t, but Jimin hears him loud and clear.

“I love you too, hyung. Now get some rest,” and Yoongi settles, hand carding gently through Jimin’s hair. And slowly, the two fall together, deep into sleep.
