“I already got the tickets, I hope you don’t mind.” Jeongguk said shyly as Yoongi walked in to the movie theater that was near their campus. “I usually like sitting more toward the front, get the full immersion, you know?”
“Of course not, as long as you let me pay for the food.” Yoongi offered a smile and then swallowed the lump in his throat. “Who wouldn’t want full immersion in a horror movie.”
He said it in a deadpanned voice, but he didn’t think Jeongguk took the hint. He looked too excited to be seeing the movie.
There was a bit of awkwardness between the two of them. Though they have talked plenty of times in the music studio and have gotten to know each other pretty well, well enough to be considered friends, this was still their first date.
At least it seemed like a date. Seeing a movie, sharing a love seat, buying him food all screamed being a date. Yoongi hoped more than anything it was a date. He didn’t know how he got this shy, doe eyed boy to even look his way to be asked out on a date, but he did, so he wasn’t going to screw it up.
Which is why he had been trying to prepare himself all damn day for this horror movie. There was no way in hell he would make a fool of himself in front of him. Especially because despite his shy-like nature, Jeongguk could also be a brat, and he would never hear the end of it if he showed how terrified he actually was.
They walked into the lobby of the movie theater and Yoongi noticed the way Jeongguk smoothed his palms over his jeans, which made Yoongi feel a little better that he seemed to be just as nervous as Yoongi.
Yoongi asked Jeongguk how his classes went that morning to make conversation as they waited in line for popcorn.
It was easy conversation starter, talking about classes. They are both music majors, which is how they met. Jeongguk wanting to be a singer and Yoongi wanting to be a producer. Jeongguk was able to rant about classes he had to take or professors he had to deal with and Yoongi was able to understand his struggles, since he went through the same classes.
The conversation lulled when Yoongi got up to the worker. He ordered them a bucket of popcorn and rolled his eyes when Jeongguk sneakily threw some chocolate down. Yoongi paid for the food and then they made their way toward the theater.
When they both sat down in the love seat Yoongi’s stomach started to twist into knots while Jeongguk was bouncing slightly in anticipation. Not only was Yoongi worried that he would look like a fool to the first person he’s actually wanted to date since high school, but he was also terrified of watching this movie.
As the trailers were playing, Jeongguk whispered to Yoongi that the movie had great reviews and that it was one of the scariest movies that was made in a long time. Jeongguk was probably trying to get him hyped for the movie, but all that it was doing was piling more dread into the pit of his stomach.
Yoongi stress ate the popcorn in his lap, almost eating half of the small bucket before the movie even started. Sometimes Jeongguk would reach over to grab some popcorn as well and his hand would brush against Yoongi’s.
Jeongguk’s soft smile with the feeling of Jeongguk’s hand brushing against his gave butterflies to his stomach that he hadn’t felt since he was a teenager. He almost forgot about how scared he was when Jeongguk shied away, a smile curling on his lips.
He didn’t have enough time to be relaxed because soon after the previews ended and the movie started. He gulped, willing to anyone who was listening that he could get through this movie without looking like a fool in front of Jeongguk. Jeongguk settled down in the seat, buzzing with excitement. Yoongi wished he could relate.
The first twenty minutes or so of the movie were fine. It was mostly just world building and Yoongi started to relax. Maybe it wouldn’t be that scary, he could get through this.
He was heavily mistaken.
The first jump scare had Yoongi almost flying five feet out of his seat. If Jeongguk noticed, he didn’t comment on it. Yoongi tried to settle his pounding heart and mentally told himself that everything would be fine. Now that he had the first scare, the next one he would be prepared, he’s got this.
He didn’t mean to. He really didn’t.
It wasn’t even a jump scare, just an extremely freaky part that Yoongi wanted no part of. One character almost died and it came to such a surprise to Yoongi that his hand shot out to grab Jeongguk’s thigh.
Jeongguk’s head whipped over to Yoongi and despite the darkness, Yoongi could see his eyes widened and lips parted in shock. Yoongi looked away embarrassed, pulling his hand away and muttered a quiet apology.
If it bothered Jeongguk, he didn’t say anything, he just turned his head back toward the movie while Yoongi slumped into the chair, biting his thumbnail.
Throughout the middle of the movie, Yoongi’s heart was pounding heavily. Most of it was intense and didn’t have many jump scares, but that didn’t mean that Yoongi wasn’t scared out of his mind.
When there was jump scares, Yoongi couldn’t help himself. It was his body screaming at him to find comfort in something if he is going to force it to go through this trauma. The second jump scare of the movie Yoongi did everything in his power not to scream out loud in the theater. So instead, he reached over and grabbed Jeongguk’s hand, clenching it tightly.
Almost as quickly as he grabbed it, he let go. Not because he was repulsed by the feeling, no quite the opposite. He felt guilty for continuously grabbing at Jeongguk in public when this might not even technically be a date.
They couldn’t exactly talk about it since they were in the middle of the movie, so Yoongi tried to keep his hands to himself.
Needless to say he reached for his hand about three more times after that.
He really liked the way Jeongguk’s hand felt in his, sue him.
After the fourth time of Yoongi shamelessly holding Jeongguk’s hand, instead of taking his hand away like he normally did, Jeongguk gripped his hand, sliding his fingers in between Yoongi’s, not letting him pull away.
Warmth spread through Yoongi’s chest and he found it momentarily hard to focus on the movie with Jeongguk’s thumb slowly rubbing up against the side of Yoongi’s.
By the end of the movie, it was impossible to ignore the loud screams and cries of terror as the climax of the movie was coming near. As much as Yoongi was distracted by holding Jeongguk’s hand, he couldn’t ignore that he was still very much watching a horror movie that has been giving him mini heart attacks for the past two hours.
Yoongi wasn’t really sure what happened in the last thirty minutes of the film. The last thing he could remember before he basically blacked out was him burying his face against Jeongguk’s shoulder, dignity be damned. He closed his eyes, willing that this movie, as well as his suffering, would end quickly.
He’s almost positive he ended up practically sitting on Jeongguk’s lap, but he was too scared to give a fuck about how he looked in front of Jeongguk anymore. If he didn’t want to talk to Yoongi ever again because of the spineless wimp he was being, he wouldn’t blame him.
Yoongi finally came to when Jeongguk tapped him on the shoulder, whispering that the movie was finished. Yoongi lifted up his head from where it was buried against his shoulder, looking around and noticed that yes, all the lights were on and the credits had stopped.
He looked over at Jeongguk and noticed that his eyes were sparkling with laughter. Yoongi then noticed instead of them holding hands, Yoongi had been hugging Jeongguk’s arm with a death grip. He was also correct in the fact that he was practically sitting on his lap, because one of his legs was draped over Jeongguk’s.
He must have been clinging to him for dear life for support.
Yoongi slowly untangled himself from Jeongguk, reaching down to grab the almost empty popcorn bucket he set on the ground, clearing his throat. “Great movie.”
Jeongguk tried to fight off a grin, but his lips twisted into a knowing smile anyway. “Sure.”
They both walked out of the theater silently, throwing their food away. Yoongi was still shaking a bit and his heart pounding from the aftermath of the movie.
“I can walk you back to the dorms if you want.” Yoongi offered once they got outside of the movie theater, not wanting to part with him so soon. Plus, though the dorms were not too far away from the theater, Yoongi didn’t want Jeongguk walking back home alone late at night.
Jeongguk’s eyes glinted with mischief. “Are you sure you can walk me back in the dark? Need me to hold your hand? You don’t know if a monster is lurking around, waiting to attack you.”
Yoongi’s lips parted in shock. “I- you-”
Jeongguk giggled at Yoongi’s lack for words, his lips curled into a stunning smile that Yoongi wished to see on his face forever. “You should have told me you would have gotten so scared while watching this movie. I would have invited Taehyung to go with me instead.”
“I wasn’t scared.” He said stubbornly, trying to hold onto what little dignity he had left.
Jeongguk laughed loudly and Yoongi’s chest clenched at the sound. Fuck, why was he so whipped for this boy. Jeongguk slipped his fingers through Yoongi’s, squeezing his hand and started to walk toward the dorm rooms.
“I really don’t need you holding my hand to protect me.” Yoongi groaned.
“I know you don’t. Can’t I just hold your hand because I want to?”
The smile that Jeongguk gave Yoongi almost made him melt into a puddle in the ground.
“O-of course you can.” Yoongi flushed, tearing his gaze away from Jeongguk before he said something stupid.
“That’s what I thought.” Jeongguk said cheekily, leaning up against Yoongi as they walked.
They stayed in comfortable silence as they walked together to Jeongguk’s dorm. Despite Jeongguk holding his hand, Yoongi couldn’t help but worry. He didn’t think that shallowly of Jeongguk, but he couldn’t help but feel like a loser.
Jeongguk wouldn’t want to date someone who could barely hold it together during a horror movie.
When they reached the front of his building, Yoongi reluctantly pulled his hand away from Jeongguk’s. He could feel Jeongguk resist and Yoongi almost felt guilty for not holding it longer.
His palm was slightly sweaty from holding his hand, but he missed the feeling of his hand against his.
They both shifted on their feet, neither of them wanting to leave, but feeling awkward just standing there. Yoongi took a deep breath, not wanting to bring up the events that took place at the movie theater, but he felt like he had to confront it if he wanted to have a chance with Jeongguk.
“I - uh. I’m sorry for - you know -” Yoongi scratched the back of his neck, looking at the ground.
Jeongguk did what Yoongi least expected by stepped forward, closing the gap between him and Yoongi and kissed the side of Yoongi’s mouth. Not enough to be a full kiss, but also too close to be meant for his cheek.
“You were cute, don’t worry.” Jeongguk grinned at him, and though his voice had a teasing lift to it, his smile was of genuine happiness.
Yoongi’s stomach clenched with warm feelings that shot through his entire body. Normally he had felt just attraction towards someone. But this, what he felt when he looked at Jeongguk, this was something completely different.
He was at a loss for words, all he was able to do was look down towards the ground again, mumbling incoherently under his breath, his cheeks completely inflamed.
“I- well. You know - I wouldn’t say that.” Yoongi stuttered, mentally hitting himself in the head to keep it cool and not look like the biggest fool on the planet. When it came to Jeongguk, apparently that wasn’t going to happen.
Jeongguk gave him a fond look that Yoongi wasn’t sure if he imagined or not. “I had a lot of fun tonight. Maybe the next time we go out we should do something a little less, scary.” He added with a teasing tone.
Yoongi ignored the slight jab at his cowardness and instead blinked at him. “You...want to go out on another date with me?”
Jeongguk tilted his head back and laughed. “Just text me you dork.” He stepped away from Yoongi, still chuckling to himself.
Before Jeongguk walked inside the building he turned around again, smiling so widely that it showed his bunny teeth that Yoongi had come to adore so much. “Have a nice night.” He sent him a little wave and turned to walk inside the building.
Yoongi watched as he walked inside of his dorm and realized that there was no going back from this boy.
