Work Text:
There they sat. Their faces completely red. Knees slightly wobbly. A faint scent of sweat had invaded the air but there was something that was more tense between the two.
“S-sorry… I hadn’t done that with anyone before.” Izuku had finally let out, his meek voice breaking the silence between him and his friend.
“Oh no, don’t apologize. It’s kinda my fault since it was my idea.” Ochaco spoke up. “Besides, I kinda thought I was rushing into it anyways.”
“No- I… thanks Uraraka, I’ve never done that with anyone before. Not with a girl at least.” The blood lingering in his cheeks.
“Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Just sorry it ended so soon.” She said plainly, her head starting to hang low.
From the doorway, a nearly inaudible cough was heard. Turning their heads, the two saw Tokoyami standing there silently.
“I should probably go.” He said to them.
Perhaps some context can clear this up.
“Ugh, someone kill me!” Bakugo’s yell could echo down the halls leading up to the common area.
There, the member of Class 1-A sat around in the common area on a Thursday afternoon. With a big test coming up, an emergency study session was called into effect.
“Jeez dude, calm down.” Kaminari’s hand hovered over Bakugo’s shoulders, afraid a simple pat on the shoulder would cause an explosive reaction from the boy.
“I don’t care! It’s total bull crap that Aizawa thinks he can just drop a test on us like this!” The fiery blonde bellowed out. For his friends, it was a hopeless case to get him to calm down. Mr. Aizawa had only given them the news that their next class had a surprise test no less than thirty seconds before the bell rang. No one could figure out his reasoning behind this, other than to send all of his students into a frenzy.
Deku decided that if he was going to get any sort of work done, he’d have to be far away from Bakugo as humanly possible. The subject had been Villain tactics with several different scenarios.
“You’d think maybe they’d give us a physical exam for this one.” Deku muttered to himself as he rounded the corner and down the hall and smacked right into someone.
“Aw, geez!” Deku quickly scrambled to grab his books. “I’m sorry! Are you okay? I know, you’re gonna make fun of me muttering to myself.” He began to explain before even seeing who it was he bumped into.
“No, no Deku. It’s fine.”
Suddenly the boy stopped cold in his tracks. The sweet voice, the caring, forgiving tone. Suddenly, if he could forgo his habit of muttering to himself he would if it meant he didn’t bump into Ochako.
“Oh gosh, Uraraka! I’m so sorry.” Midoriya leapt to his feet and reached out his hand to help her up. He suddenly felt his body become weightless as his friend quickly touched her finger tips together. Gravity returned once more to him as he settled down on his feet.
“Don’t need to apologize again Deku, I was actually looking for you.” She said, quickly brushing her hair out of her eyes before leaning down to pick up her book. “I was, thinking that tonight, we could maybe… have a study session together… at my dorm”
Izuku was once again frozen in place, so much that Todoroki would blush, which he was actively trying to avoid.
“I-I-I y-yeah…” Deku told her. ‘Quick Deku, think of something.’ He thought to himself. “I-I mean, anyway I can get away from Bakugo before he blows the roof off the place.” The young teen chuckled.
From down the halls, only “I AM GOING TO PAINT THE WALLS PURPLE WITH YOU IF YOU TRY TO COPY MY NOTES ONE MORE TIME YOU PIECE OF-” could be heard before the door was quickly shut.
Giggling to herself. “Kinda why I wanted to ask you, I’ll need help pulling our classmates from the crater he’ll inevitably create.” Uraraka joked. “What time works best?”
“Oh! Uh…” His hand reached up and scratched his green hair. “I can be there around 7 if that works.”
“Perfect!” Ochako cheered. “I’ll get Tokoyami to brew us some of his coffee if you’d like.”
Smiling at the thought of spending time alone with Uraraka, Deku nodded. “I’ll see you there, tonight.” He spoke.
Turning to leave, she gave him one last wave as she walked down the hall. All young Midoriya could do was stare in awe. Her cheeks seemed to glow an extra shade of pink and her eyes sparkled, how glossy her lips looked. Sure he was imagining it that way but it felt real to him.
“I just need to uh…” Deku thought as he hesitantly took his first step, his knees slightly shaking. “I can keep it cool. I got this.”
Stumbling over his feet, Deku quickly shifted his weight onto the wall to support himself to prevent himself from tripping once more. Catching his breath and regaining his bearings, he triumphantly held his head up as he walked down the halls.
“I got this.” He told himself.
“...Usually during heists gone wrong, villains try to keep as many hostages as they can. It’s the one leverage they can have over any hero.” Deku explained.
“I’ve read that usually they’ll give up their hostage for either reduced jail time or to just have heroes back off.” Uraraka responded
“Wait, I didn’t find that, which page are you on?
The two had been studying for over two hours now. The two each had one earbud in, the candle that Uraraka lit had burned out a while ago, leaving a lingering scent of roses in the air.
“Page 156. Says here that the Chickenman would trade hostages in exchange for a safe excuse.”
Deku leaned over to see her book. “Wonder why he agreed to share his tactics? Maybe it was for a reduced sentence? Or it could be that he wanted to change his ways and prevent others like him from doing crimes like he did and-”
“Hey, what song is that you’re listening to?” Ochako cut him off.
“O-oh, uhm…” Rather than tell her, Deku grabbed the other earbud, wiped it clean just in case, and held it to her ear. Uraraka reached, paused her music, and then listened. She eventually closed her eyes, a small grin appearing on her face as he head swayed side to side.
“Yep, this is a you song.” The girl finally spoke, looking over to him. “It’s very soothing.”
“I uh… thanks.” Deku could feel the temperature in his face rise. “W-we should keep studying.”
“Come on, we at least deserve a break.” Uraraka told him, sitting up and hopping off her bed. Standing up, she reached her arms up to the ceiling and let out a groan as her joints popped.
“Hey, uhm… have you ever danced with anyone before?”
Deku, who had to turn his head away when she stretched, looked back at his friends. “Oh uh… no.”
“Well, I haven’t either.” Unplugging her earbuds, Uraraka reached over and pulled out a portable speaker. “Come on, just a quick break from studying.”
On one hand, young Midoriya really wanted to pass this test. On the other hand, was Uraraka’s reaching to him. Deciding that maybe for once to relax.
Besides, he’d be an idiot to pass this up.
Sitting up and taking her hand, Ochako gently placed it on her shoulder while she grabbed the other and held it up. “We can just, waddle in place.” She giggled.
Deku couldn’t help but smile. “You had this planned, didn’t you?” He accused her, though in no way was anger in his tone.
“What!? No.” Uraraka shook her head. “I just put on a random song and thought we’d dance to it.”
“But I saw you choose it.” Deku told her.
“Let’s just forget about it for now.” Ochako interjected, instead. “Let’s just… forget about it, for now.” She spoke, her tone somber. Leaning a head on Deku’s shoulder, she closed her eyes and felt herself sway alongside her friend as the music played.
Midoriya leaned his head and could feel Uraraka’s soft hair press against his cheek. Without thinking about it, his hand moved from her shoulder and around her lower back. Much to his surprise, he didn’t feel nervous at all, only boldness as he gently squeezed her hand, wanting this moment to feel as real as he could.
Looking up and staring into his eyes as the song ended, the young girl finally ended the comforting silence between them.
“Deku, than-”
There was a sudden knock on the door before it opened, and Tokoyami stood there with one cup of coffee in his hand and Dark Shadow holding the other.
“Oh-” He only saw the two with their arms around each other. “I can come back if-”
“No no! It’s fine.” Deku tried to explain. “We kinda forgot you were coming.”
“Yes…” Tokoyami was thinking less of the two’s interaction but rather their way of trying to brush it off. “I brought you two some coffee. Sorry it’s late, I got a lot of requests for cups.”
“Y-you… can keep them.” Uraraka explained. “We were almost done anyways.” She tried to explain.
Before Tokoyami could respond, his companion interjected. “Gotcha sweet cheeks.” Dark Shadow replied before floating not to far down the fall to find Kirishima and Jirou walking together. “Hey you two, coffee on us since Miss Gravity and Broccoli got caught in the act.”
Having already scoffed at her nickname, Uraraka leapt to her feet and ran over to the doorway. “HEY!” She yelled out.
“Dark Shadow!” Tokoyami scolded. “They were merely slow dancing to a song.”
“Oh no…” Deku muttered to himself.
Kirishima and Jirou looked to each other. “Oh… that’s interesting, I guess.” Jirou commented. “You two love birds have fun then. No pun intended.” She said before turning to leave with her classmate.
Ochako rushed out of her room and after them. “So help me if you start telling people!” She yelled out to them, before turning around to see Sero standing at the other end of the hall.
“How much did you-”
“All of it.” He told her. Turning his head. “Someone else did but sh- uh, they are giving me the signal to not tell you who they are so… see ya.” Sero told her before turning to leave.
“No, damn it. No!” Ochako called out, turning to run past Tokoyami before she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Just leave it.” Deku explained, his face flushed. “We should just wrap up notes for now.”
Sighing in defeat, Ochako returned to her room. After the brief discussion over the “dance” and Tokoyami excusing himself, Deku had packed up his things and was ready.
“See you tomorrow, good luck on the test.” Izuku told her as he headed for the door.
“But hey, before you go.” Uraraka suddenly spoke up. “I… did really enjoy dancing with you.” She told him. “A-and… I wouldn’t mind doing it again sometime.”
Her words froze him in place. All Deku could do was stare back at her for a few moments as his brained attempted to process what she just told. “Y-yeah I mean… we could maybe, have another study session, with music and probably, dance again sometime.” He fumbled over nearly every word in that sentence, though he meant all of it.
Flashing him a smile, Uraraka waved to him. “Well I’m looking forward to it.” She leapt from her bed and pulled him into a tight hug. Before she could ponder on it, her lips quickly pecked his cheek. “S-see you around, Deku.” she told him.
Having lost the physical ability to speak, Deku gave a weak wave and stepped outside into the dorm.
“I… w-wow.” He thought out loud as he gently put a hand to his cheek.
He looked up to see Asui, Jiro, Toru, and Sato standing there.
“How was it!?” Toru asked with a venomous amount of enthusiasm.
“Did you even kiss at all?” Asui followed up.
“Need a playlist? I got you, ya know.” Jirou told him.
“Wait! No!” Deku tired to explain but it was too late. While being hounded by question through what might be the whole weekend, the one thing he was most concerned about was if Uraraka would be bothered a much as he was. She wasnice enough to invite him over to study and offered to dance in the first place
Then again, all he could wonder was when the next test was.
