Of Sickness and Shopping

Summary:

In which Izuku’s mother is sick, he and Hitoshi go grocery shopping and they tell her something important.

Work Text:

Mom isn’t very well today. Izuku knew this the moment he got up and heard the coughing coming from her bedroom. When he investigated, he found her curled up in bed with a runny nose and flushed face, coughing into a tissue. She looked so ill, and she still does now, even though Izuku has spent all morning giving her painkillers and            tissues and offering sympathy. But at least it’s a day off of school, so he is here to look after her.

But when someone knocks on the front door at 1pm, Izuku realises he has totally forgotten something. And he feels like an idiot as he races through their home and answers the door.

Opening it, he sees Shinsou Hitoshi, his boyfriend. Hitoshi looks as exhausted as ever, but smiles and waves. “Hi.”

“Hi,” Izuku says, stepping forwards to give him a quick kiss. “Sorry, I forgot you were coming. You see, my mom’s sick.”

“Oh, should I come back another time?”

“As long as you don’t mind seeing my mom when she’s sick, you’re fine to stay,” Izuku says.

Because he doesn’t want to back out now. Ever since he and Hitoshi started dating, Izuku has been psyching himself up to come out to his mom. And today is the day he and Hitoshi agreed to tell his mom about their relationship, and he’s not giving up now.

“Okay,” Hitoshi says, and Izuku shows his boyfriend into his home.

“Mom!” Izuku calls. “I’ve got a visitor. Is it okay for him to stay?”

Mom coughs, but then says, “Of course.”

Smiling at Hitoshi, he leads him into the living room. Mom is curled up on the couch under a blanket, her face less flushed but her cough worse.

“Hello, dear,” Mom says to Hitoshi. “Sorry I look such a mess.”

“No, it’s fine,” Hitoshi says. “It’s good to meet you, Mrs Midoriya.”

And Izuku is about to sit down next to Mom and come out, when Mom says, “I don’t mean to both you, but would you two be able to get some shopping for me? We really need some groceries but I don’t think I’m able to go out.”

“It’s not a problem,” Izuku says, wanting to help his mom out in any way he can. “We can do that.”

So he and Hitoshi take mom’s purse and head out to buy the groceries. As they walk into town, Izuku holds his boyfriend’s hand and smiles. Ever since they met at the School Festival, he and Hitoshi have been close friends. And last month, they kissed and started dating.

“Did you like my mom?” he asks.

“She seems nice,” Hitoshi says.

Still holding hands, they enter the first store they find and start collecting the groceries Mom needed. They bump into a group of UA students down the noodles aisle, but they don’t let go of each other’s hands; after all, most people at school know they are dating, and they don’t care what people think.

Soon, Izuku is handing over a bundle of Yen notes and the couple leave the store with two bags full of their groceries. On the walk back to his place, Izuku glances at Hitoshi and says, “I really like… dating you.”

His face goes hot and Izuku realises he is blushing.

Hitoshi smiles. “Really?”

“Yes, I—”

He freezes, completely under his boyfriend’s control. But before he has to worry about getting out of this, Hitoshi lets him go. He’s smiling.

“I still love dating you,” he says. “Even when you do crap like that.”

Hitoshi laughs and Izuku gives him a kiss.

“By the way,” he says as they resume walking. “How did coming out to your dad go?”

“Fine,” Hitoshi says. “I mean, Dad’s gay, so he’d be a huge hypocrite if he didn’t accept me.”

Izuku smiles, glad to know Aizawa-sensei is as a caring father as he is a good teacher. “Now it’s just up to my mom.”

“I’m sure it’ll go fine,” Hitoshi says, and Izuku squeezes his hand.

After unpacking their shopping and getting Mom a glass of water, Izuku and Hitoshi sit back in the living room and try to bring up their relationship again.

“Um, Mom, can I talk to you about something?” he asks after Mom has thanked them for the fifteenth time for getting the shopping for her.

“Of course,” Mom says, coughing.

“Well… first of all… I’m bisexual. Is that okay?” Izuku says, blushing.

“Oh, Izuku, of course it is,” Mom says, smiling. “You didn’t get worked out about telling me, did you?”

Izuku shakes his head, even though he kind of did. “Nope. But thanks, Mom. And there’s another thing… me and Hitoshi are… in a relationship.”

As he speaks, he reaches for Hitoshi’s hand and interlocks their fingers, smiling.

“I’m so glad you’ve found someone, darling,” Mom says. “And such a lovely, polite boy too. I hope you’ll make my Izuku wonderfully happy.”

Hitoshi blushes slightly. “Thank you, Mrs Midoriya.”

And Izuku beams, so glad everything has gone so well.

After Hitoshi goes home, Izuku starts to cook up some ramen for Mom (hoping packing it with vegetables might make her feel better). As he cooks, Mom wanders into the kitchen with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

“Go back to bed, Mom,” he says.

“No, I’m feeling better, really. Izuku, thank you for telling me about your sexuality and your boyfriend. You were very brave.”

Izuku spins around and looks at her, grinning. “Thanks for accepting me, Mom. I love you.”

And he hugs her tightly.
