[Prompt: Childhood friends]

Work Text:

When she was eight years old, Mina met a girl who was to become a lifelong friend and her girlfriend. She wandered into her classroom on the first day of the school year to find a new student sat in her classroom, a girl who had more than a slight resemblance to a frog. Always happy to chat to new people, Mina slid into the seat beside the girl and grinned.

“Hi, I’m Ashido Mina!” she said, offering her hand.

“Ribbit,” the girl croaked, but she smiled and shook her hand. “I’m Asui Tsuyu.”

“You’re a lot like a frog,” Mina said. “I think that’s cool!”

“Thank you. It’s my Quirk, you see. It means I can do anything a frog can do.”

Mina grinned even wider. “That’s awesome! So you can climb walls and stuff?”

Tsuyu nodded. “Yeah, and I can do things like this with my tongue.”

And, to Mina’s amazement, Tsuyu stuck her incredibly long tongue out and snatched a book from the shelf at the front of the room.

Unfortunately, this was the moment their teachers walked into the room. “Asui! No using your Quirk in class!”

“Sorry, Sensei,” Tsuyu mumbled.

But when he turned to write on the chalkboard, Mina flashed her new friend a smile. And a rather sheepish Tsuyu returned her smile.

---

As the end of middle school drew nearer, Tsuyu and Mina could be found in the library every lunchtime, revising for the famously difficult entrance exams for UA high school. For years, it bad been a shared dream of theirs to get into UA, and they were determined to do it together.

Tsuyu was far smarter than Mina, and so a lot of their studies revolved around Tsuyu tutoring her.

“Sorry I’m so dumb,” Mina said one day, struggling to retain the information she just read.

“You’re not dumb,” Tsuyu said, patting her hand. “You’re just not good with books. But you’ll do this. We’ll do this, ribbit.”

Mina smiled and nodded. “Yeah, we’ll do this.”

And they did. On exam day at UA, the pair took their exams along with many other teenagers, and Mina had a feeling she may had scraped a pass in her written exam. But she didn’t have time to talk to Tsuyu about it, because students from the same middle school were split up and herded off to different locations for the practical exam.

The practical was amazing. Mina could use her Quirk to her full advantage, destroying the robots with powerful acid and taking down robot after robot. Although she did wish she could see what Tsuyu was doing.

At least they got to talk once the exams were over and they headed home. The best friends held hands and talked about everything that happened that day.

“I think I passed the written exam,” Mina said. “No doubt thanks to your tutoring.”

Tsuyu blushes slightly, smiling. “Ribbit. No problem. It went all right for me too. What about the practical?”

As they continued their walk away from the school and Mina listened to Tsuyu talk about how she destroyed robots in her exam, Mina’s chest went tight. Her face heating up, she stared at her friend, and…

Am I in love with her? She thought, her heart pounding.

---

A week after the exams, Mina received her news: she got in!

And she screamed with delight as she raced around her home, her parents almost as happy as her. She couldn’t believe it. She was really going to go to UA! It was amazing.

But there was something she needed to know; did Tsuyu pass too?

So Mina rushed out of the front door and ran to Tsuyu’s house. They lived quite close, but she was still out of breath when she arrived and knocked on the door. It was opened by Tsuyu’s mom, and from the look on her face Mina knew exactly what had happened.

“Mina!” Tsuyu said, rushing over. “I got in! Did you?”

Mina nodded, grinning. “We’re going to UA!”

She hugged her friend tightly, so totally delighted by this. They were going to go to UA, together.

Tsuyu invited her in and they went into her bedroom. Sitting on the bed beside her best friend, Mina’s chest felt weird again. would… would this be a good time to tell her?

“Uh, Tsu?” she said. “There’s… something I need to tell you.”

Tsuyu looked at her, tilting her head to the side slightly. “What’s up?”

“Well, you know how we’ve been friends for so long, and… Tsu, I think I’m in love with you.”

“Oh,” Tsuyu said, and then there was almost a minute of painful silence. But then Tsuyu said, “Ribbit. Well…” She went bright red, faltering over her words. “I…”

And Mina sat dead still, waiting for it, waiting for the rejection and the awkwardness and the end of their friendship. But none of that happened.

Because Tsuyu leaned towards her and kissed her.

Her eyes widening, Mina stared when Tsuyu pulled away.

“Uh, sorry, I…”

“No, it’s… it’s fine,” Mina said. She reached for Tsuyu’s hand and squeezed it tightly. “So, does this mean…?”

Tsuyu nodded. “Yeah… I love you too.”

And Mina laughed with sheer delight, so amazed that she had got into UA and got a girlfriend all in the same day, and kissed Tsuyu.
