Summary:

“Sawamura, I heard you got subbed out.”

When Miyuki returned from Inashiro, all anyone could talk about was the game that Sawamura pitched. Yet the loud-mouthed pitcher didn't welcome him back nor was he anywhere to be found. Miyuki was not going to leave it at that.

Some spoilers for the latest chapters.

Notes:

MIYUKI IS BACK BUT HE HASN'T REUNITED WITH SAWAMURA (YET) SO I TOOK MATTERS INTO MY OWN HANDS BT (like any thirsty fan would want/do).

I haven't seen the raws for this chapter yet, I've only read the spoiler summary on the Daiya Facebook group (which I assume is from GDV). So, please ignore any inconsistencies. I also tried posting this yesterday but the archive was facing some problems. T_T

Anyway, please enjoy!

Work Text:

“Sawamura, I heard you got subbed out.” Miyuki teased as he entered the room, begging off Kuramochi from returning for at least half an hour so he could have Sawamura all to himself.

On the bed, Sawamura frowned. He wanted to go welcome their captain but he was tired, he didn’t have the energy or patience to deal with Miyuki. Especially since he got subbed out. He didn’t know how to face his catcher after confidently promising him that he would defend Seido’s winning streak until he came back.

Miyuki frowned lightly when Sawamura shifted on the bed to cover himself with his blankets. “Hey...that’s not what I meant, idiot. Move.”

He took a seat on the corner of the bed with a little sigh. For a moment, he allowed him to stare at the pitcher’s back, waiting to see if Sawamura would actually stop this and face him. When that didn’t happen after a few seconds, Miyuki pulled the younger boy out from under the blankets and gathered him in his arms.

Sawamura frowned for being manhandled, but let himself be hugged as he leaned all his weight on Miyuki and rested his chin on the catcher’s shoulder. “I got subbed out.”

“Yeah, but you should hear what everyone told me.” Kazuya chuckled, rubbing a hand up and down Sawamura’s back. “They didn’t ask me about Mei for once, they were all talking about you.”

At that Sawamura’s shoulders jerked lightly and Miyuki grinned to himself. “Really? What did they say?”

Miyuki snickered, “why don’t you ask them for yourself?”

“Miyuki—“

“Don’t yell by my ear, idiot.” Miyuki reprimanded him playfully as Sawamura pulled himself away to glare at him. He grinned slyly at the pitcher, “well, too bad you’re tired. I still had some energy left, I wanted to play catch. Oh well, I’ll just have to—“

“I’LL PLAY CATCH WITH YOU!!!”

Miyuki laughed, “I’m joking, idiot. You should rest.”

Sawamura frowned, his shoulders immediately sinking. “You’re really the meanest captain.”

Miyuki chuckled and pushed Sawamura back down on the bed. It didn’t take much effort, the pitcher fell like a heavy sack of balls, evidently tired. And this was the guy who just enthusiastically offered to play catch with him. He was more than just a handful, but he’d have Sawamura’s brand of annoying than Narumiya’s any day.

He pulled up the blankets and tucked Sawamura in, amused that the pitcher didn’t even complain about being treated like a child.

“Yes, yes. And you’re the most annoying kouhai.”

Sawamura huffed through his nose and turned away from him. Miyuki patted him gently on the side and made to rise so he could leave the pitcher to rest, but he paused mid-action when the other spoke.

“Listen, I’m sorry we lost after I told you we’d defend Seido.”

Miyuki was surprised to hear that coming from him. Sawamura didn’t lose a single game, and yet he shouldered the defeat of the team as his own. And it wasn’t said out of arrogance, Sawamura cared for the team and played for the team. Miyuki couldn’t help but smile as he reached his hand over to run his fingers through the other’s hair.

“Idiot,” he said, drawing the word out just to tease a little. He leaned his body close and continued, “I haven’t seen the video yet, but I know you were good today.”

He felt Sawamura jerk at the praise and smiled freely at the reaction. “Get some sleep, Sawamura. I really want to see you pitch like that again, so don’t get yourself too worked up over today.”

Sawamura responded with a small but stubborn and cheeky sound. As punishment, Miyuki leaned closer and gently blew on his ear. The pitcher shivered, letting out an annoyed groan but before he could even fire back a wise one, Miyuki whispered to him in a low voice.

“Your reliable senpai will be making the calls for you next time, Eijun. So, prepare yourself.”

Sawamura stiffened, going unusually quiet save for his heavy breathing. Miyuki had to make an effort to stop himself from laughing so he pulled away before he lost control of himself. Yet he couldn’t stop the grin from spreading when he saw how red the other’s ears were.

Catching for Sawamura was never a dull moment, he thought fondly as he turned off the lights and left the room. He was sure he wouldn’t be able to deny any of Sawamura’s requests to play catch the next morning. His fingers were already itching to catch for him and Miyuki knew with certainty that things will only get interesting from here on out—but first, he needed to get the videos from Nabe.
