Extract from A Puppy and A Thief's Life

Summary:

Another dull day on the Yokohama chessboard, where the usual activities are occurring: bombing random buildings, chasing tigers, worrying about your tea going cold...

Notes:

The list of acronyms for y'all:
(F/N) - first name
(L/N) - last name
(E/C) - eye colour
(S/E/C) - second eye colour (used whenever reader uses her ability)

Another part of the Akutagawa x Reader project. This work is based on the third episode of season 1; a simple continuation of the action from the mafia POV, mixed with my own ideas (as to not re-tell the whole damn thing only). I'll try to put up the next parts as soon as I'm done with them. Drop opinions and constructional criticism down in the comments. Enjoy!

Work Text:

“I’ll wait for you outside. Don’t take too long, I need to get back to HQ after all this.” I demanded with a blank face.

“Mori-san?”

“Nah, my tea’s gonna run cold.”

With a roll of his eyes, Akutagawa proceeded to enter the police station. Mori-san gave him another batch of quick jobs around the city, and I decided to tag along as I was bored out of my mind, as usual. Positioning myself at the door, I listened in on the conversation between the three men.

The ‘respected’ (L/N) family is widely known for their gambling addiction in the underworld (AN: Kakegurui anyone?), a trait that has been passed to me as well. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to bet with Akutagawa on how quick the authorities will realise they’re face to face with the Port Mafia ‘Puppy’. Akutagawa said he’d last until he finished the ‘lost and found’ form. I disagreed; I said he’ll only last until he places the bag on the counter.

“I found a bag on the ground. I think it’s been lost by it’s owner.”

“Ah, lost and found. Then if you could fill out this form…”

“Hm? I’ve seen you before.”

(L/N) gambling skills strike again! He’s gonna be all grumpy now… Hehe don’t mess with me, Puppy.

“That’s impressive. I’ve already been found out.”

“Wait, is he the wanted fugitive?!”

Chuckling, I take a peek inside, awaiting the slaughter to begin.

“Stop!”

“The military police of this city are a distinguished force.”

The slicing and impaling were everything you could hear and see. Blood oozed out of their lifeless carcasses, painted the walls and everything around them.

I see him turn towards the door, so I slowly start walking away from the station. Meanwhile a lady enters the station, clueless about what she was going to witness.

Akutagawa falls in step with me, wearing a pretty annoyed expression. With a malicious grin, I press the button in my coat pocket and revere the satisfying explosion behind us, fluttering our long coats. (AN: Cool guys don’t look at explosions…) Akutagawa whips out his phone and reports the success to Mori, asking for the next location.

“You owe me that cuddling time now, Mr. Akutagrumpy.”

“Shut up.”

Aww, he’s too cute when he gets annoyed over these little things.

“So, what’s the location of the next beacon?”, I asked.

“This was the last one. Boss instructed me to regroup with Higuchi and capture a runaway tiger.”

“The tiger that’s been sighted around lately? How much for it on the market?”

“7 billion.”

“Oi oi oi, that’s a bit too much for a tiger, isn’t it?”

Akutagawa didn’t continue, only marched further towards his safe point. I decided to take another path towards the capture point, where Chi-kun will bring the unsuspecting target. Positioning myself on top of a nearby building, I spot Chi-kun along with three detectives I recognised were from the ADA coming through the back-alley. When Higuchi revealed her identity, it seems the three were pretty shaken by hearing Ryuu’s name. Cute, they’re so afraid of my little puppy, it’s hilarious.

Chi-kun started shooting everywhere trying to hit the boy who camouflaged in his snow-screen. I was right at the edge of the screen so seeing him move behind Higuchi was easy. Said boy appeared behind Higuchi and proceeded to kill her by choking her. But you may ask yourselves, ‘(F/N), why aren’t you moving to save your fellow Mafia member?’. Well guess why: because my beloved idiot would behead me for interfering in his mission. Saving Higuchi was part of the mission, and I still want my head on my shoulders… although it won’t be easy to behead an executive, but oh well, I’d still have to deal with the grump at home.

Another impale for the day, God, this is becoming more and more boring…

“This is your karma, jinko.”

“My karma?”

The terrified neko-boy (he’s too cute for a vicious tiger) decided to further disobey Akutagawa, which resulted in the lack of his leg. Sigh... Bloodshed could be easily reduced if they would just come quietly, seriously... But no, you just have to scream on the top of your lungs, making it harder for you and harder for us.

“Nani?”

I return my focus on the scene below, where the jinko leaped onto the wall, surrounded by the familiar glyphs and a unique blue hue. I take back what I said earlier; this is becoming interesting.

“He regenerated his leg!”

“Yes... this is how it should be!”

The now fully grown, snowy tiger is attacking Akutagawa, who in return activated the Spider Thread to shield himself from the surprisingly fast charge. After being promptly slammed into the wall, Higuchi started shooting into nothing, as the illusion-ability boy was still breathing a few meters behind them. As dark matter and white claws almost collided, a familiar, yet terrifying figure, was able to stop the two gifteds just in the nick of time.

“Dazai-san...” I murmured to myself.

Closing my (E/C) eyes, I concentrate on the space around me; smirking, I mutter:

“Ability: The Time Thief”

I open my eyes to meet my own reflection in a nearby rooftop window, (S/E/C) orbs meeting my own.

“Excellent. Now the fun begins.” I speak to nobody in particular.

A five-storey fall later, I graciously land next to Dazai’s frozen figure and escape the deathly silent time-freeze. The ‘shiiiing’ of the katana at my back being unsheathed resonates throughout the gloomy alley and halts at my former mentor’s neck.

“Well, well, well... come to rescue your little pet, traitor?” I inquired with a constant playful smirk.

“Well, I couldn’t help but listen to the beautiful lady after I saw her.” He threw a suggestive look towards Higuchi who started roaming her pockets. In her hand was a small microphone.

“So you knew my plan from the start?” Higuchi was pretty riled up by now.

“Sigh, it’s pretty hard to outsmart this one, I’ll admit. But it’s not impossible...” I pressed the blade closer to his skin. “For example, your ability works on contact, while mine takes away your time, therefore it renders you—“ I step away from him, lowering the sword and clicking my fingers in his direction “motionless.”.

Only his figure was deprived of movement, as the others watched in awe how Dazai’s eyes were frantically moving, conscious of his unfortunate and amuzing situation.

“You didn’t consider me the most valuable possession of the Port Mafia for nothing, Mr. Devil Prodigy.”

With this, I released him from the time trap and took my place next to Akutagawa, who was pretty silent (probably concentrated on his senpaiiii~).

“Your jinko is gonna wake up soon, and those two aren’t gonna last long. We’re gonna go back for now, my tea’s getting cold.” I informed them all, smiling.

Unexpectedly, Akutagawa decided to add a few parting words.

“That jinko has a bounty on his head.”

“How much?” Dazai seemed calmed about this.

“7 billion.”

“That’s very generous.”

“The bounty will belong to the Port Mafia.”

“Is that a declaration of war on the Agency?”

Higuchi intervened:

“You are part of an insignificant organisation with a dozen workers or so, while we control the underworld with economic, political and financial ties everywhere. You wouldn’t last 3 days if we were to go after you.” She pointed her gun at Dazai.

“I know all of that.”

Chuckling, Akutagawa silenced her.

“Stop it, Higuchi. It’s useless for you to go up against him.”

“But Akutagawa-senp—“

“Oi (F/N)! Let’s go.”

“Hey, don’t order me around, puppy.”

Akutagawa and his partner started towards the exit of the alley. I remained a few feet behind so they could get out of hearing-reach. I turned around and found that familiar grin splayed on his face.

“How have you been, (F/N)?”

“Funny you ask, I thought you didn’t care about Ryuu and I anymore, only about Sakunosuke-san.”

“Don’t be mean, (F/N)-chan!”

I could only smile and shake my head at his sweet and innocent façade.

“On another note, how’s it like, dominating Akutagawa-kun?”

At the sound of that, I choked with my own spit.

“E-Excuse me?”

“How’s it like bossing Akutagawa-kun around, as one of the five executives?”

Ah, that’s what he meant.

“You would know best, Dazai-san.”

At that, he let out a laugh.

“Based on your reaction, he also finally confronted you romantically, did he not?”

“Sharp as when you left. Yes, seems it took him two years to get a pair of balls.” I laughed.

“Well, I’ll be off. Atsushi-kun here is waking up, wouldn’t want him to know too much.” He winked at me.

“About your membership or my relationship?” I asked laughing.

“About your connection to me. He’ll find out about Akutagawa-kun, but he should remain oblivious about you. For now.”

Sigh, again with his secrecy and confidentiality. As if I hadn’t had enough of that 4 years ago...

“Fine. Say hi to the president, that is if he still remembers me.” I said smirking.

“Im sure he won’t forget your face too soon, Little Time Thief.”

“I’m glad. Well then, good luck in your search for beautiful ladies with suicidal desires.”

With that, I clicked my fingers and glanced at my reflection in a small squared window, observing my (S/E/C) eyes again. I turned towards the boulevard, and took my leave catching up to the angsty mafia pair.

“So, what’s next on the agenda?” I think I startled them by almost screaming this in their ears.

“We’re done for today, (L/N)-san.” Higuchi answered with a very serious and submissive tone, trying to cover her momentary shock.

“(F/N), stop your stupid games. Hurry up and get your damn tea.”

This is nothing new, to be honest. Akutagawa has always carried that tsundere personality around me at work. At home though... to be continued I suppose hehe.

We enter the skyscraper base of the mafia, where our offices were located. The guards there instantly raise their weapons at us, to which Chi-kun simply answers “Higuchi desu.”. Akutagawa doesn’t even bat an eye at them; they can feel his impatience and dark aura therefore they don’t ask questions. As for me, I’ve already entered the freeze and reappeared behind the guards.

“You don’t remember me? I’m very hurt, how could you?” I fake-whined.

Hearing my voice, they instantly spun around, shocked as to how I even slipped past them. When they realised who they were pointing their guns at, they lowered them before I could even crack a smile at them.

“(L/N)-san, we apologise.”

“Apologies, huh? Dunno if I could apologise if I let my blade slip past your neck... There would be nobody to apologise to...”

At the sound of my threat, the two were startled enough to scurry to the sides of the hallway, making way for Akutagawa and Higuchi to pass through.

We headed for our offices respectively, Akutagawa getting slightly closer to me as we advanced into the base. Feeling a little tap on my elbow, I smile in understanding.

Someone’s impatient... that’s not necessarily bad. :>

I turn right to a mahogany door with a nice ‘Keep the fuck away’ sign stuck to it in big ivory letters. Pressing the handle, the door reveals a large, black and white-based room, accompanied by a creak of the hinges and the soft thump of the door shutting.
The petit, vintage sofas around the glass coffee table welcome me into what I like to call the ‘Paperwork-Cage’. Most of the walls are indescretely filled with paintings and photographs, while one of them holds pictures, newspaper articles, scientific reports and strings linking them all together, along with the title ‘Tenma Institution: Case - Study of Subject 9, (F/N) (L/N)’.
Towards the back of the room, a pristine white desk equipped with two small stacks of papers, a bonsai plant, a silver laptop and a simple black mug half filled with my white tea was visible, all in front of the huge glass window, looking over the Yokohama port and the horizon on the sea at a tangerine dawn. The high backrest of the obsidian chair jammed into the desk seemed very welcoming, ensuing the chase after tigers and detectives. The familiar creak behind me captured my attention but did not alarm me; I told you someone’s impatient.

“That was fast. Isn’t your office on the other side of the floor?” I inquired, smiling.

“Who says I went there?” Akutagawa instantly responded with his usual straight face.

There was a pause. He paced around the room, despite being very well aquainted with it. As I expected, his gaze abruptly fell on the investigation board. Slowly, he took a few steps towards it and stopped at the most frequented area, full of strings of all colours. He extended a bony arm towards an old photograph of a 7 year old (F/N) in a subject file.

“Any progress in tracking them?” He questioned.

“If I got so much as a whiff of them, they’d have spilled their intelligence and then dropped dead by now.”

Another uncomfortable pause.

“It’s— It’s as if they’ve vanished, swallowed by a black hole.” I despaired.

I felt a reassurring hand on my back, which was ironically unsure of its own actions itself, compliments of Akutagawa’s tsun-tsun personality. I felt a pair of lips closing in, and the soft, warm breath tickling my earlobe. An unusually rare and gentle tone made its way to my ear.

“We’ll find them. I’ll make sure of it.”

“Thank you, Ryuu.”

His lips now enclosed around my earlobe, lightly biting and sucking it. Slowly getting into it, he proceeded down my neck, peppering soft kisses wherever he could get. Nothing seemed forced or sexual; this was a geniune exchange of love through less animalistic means (lol). It seems that the right side of my neck wasn’t enough to satiate his need, therefore I found myself being turned around by a curious pair of hands which roamed around my waist.
All throughout his ministrations, my eyes were closed; when we were face to face, I opened my eyes to a most endearing sight: my Ryuu, my scary, deadly, hotheaded, tsun-tsun, cinnamon roll Ryuu, was reduced to an honest smile which I bet only Gin was able to ever see. I could only smile myself at this, since I know it’s not something he does everyday.
His hands were anxiously pulling my form closer, as I was now shifting my palms towards his raven hair. His quicksilver eyes bore into mine as we unconsciously pulled closer at each other, until we could no longer resist the temptation. Dry lips met moist lips in a passionate touch, which evolved into more, as he delicately opened his mouth and lightly touched my lower lip with his tongue. I complied, as I couldn’t resist any form of teasing at this point, opened my mouth and joined his game of dominance through our tongues. It may have been ten minutes, it may have been ten seconds, there was nothing we could feel except for each other; my eager hands tugging at his charcoal strands, his needy hands massaging my waist and lower back with tender touches full of love.
The need to part was huge, yet the desire was null; a thin string of saliva connects our lips, proof of the emotions we shared in those moments, and yet when we looked each other in the eyes, it was definitely not enough for either of us. A small “Fuck it” was audible from him, and we lunged at each other, careless of the outside world, of mentors, tigers and illeagalities.
Anyone looking in would be confused, wondering if this was a brawl or really, a fierce exchange of warmth fueled by years of being deprived of tenderness and care. Well, nobody would guess that, what am I saying...
We crashed into one other, in a small leap, where I crossed my legs around his waist as he gingerly picked me up by the legs and rear. Our lips meshed together perfectly, while my restless hands craved for Akutagawa’s soft onyx locks and clawed at his bloody trench coat. To my surprise, I was able to feel movement during this sensation of numbness: he took a few steps towards one of the luxurious couches situated close to the door, which, if I remember correctly, was probably still unlocked. My back hit the soft material of the sofa and his body quickly followed downwards, landing on his elbows and forearms, just barely keeping himself from crashing onto my form.
The feverish kisses didn’t halt for a second, his lips gradually making their way down my neck, instantly figuring out my sweet spot. Impatience can hurt it seems, since Akutagawa sucked and bit that spot until he left me moaning and bloomed a deep brown mark there. His hands now travelled lower on my torso, hooking at my disheveled white shirt’s buttons.

“R-Ryuu...mmh... Ryuu wait—“ I half moaned.

He detatched his warm lips from my glistening skin and asked a silent question through his lustful gaze.

“N-Not here... it’s the damn headquarters. Fucking Tachihara will listen in...”

Akutagawa’s mood shifted to a very irritated one at the sound of Tachi’s name. The poor guy is too head over heels to heed my warnings concerning Ryuu’s wrath. He growled but complied and sat up, giving me space to stand as well.

“Fine, but I don’t believe I’ve completed your reward for the bet yet...” he added, his face showing a stirring pout, almost pleading to let him continue.

“I haven’t forgotten about it one bit, Ryuu. Why do you think I asked for it? Your apartment is closer, you know...”

He remained silent, although a smile was slightly visible on his mouth (that did wonders btw). We fixed ourselves quickly and I proceeded to grab my stuff sprawled around the office.

“Ah shit. My tea is now ruined.”

In that moment I swear to God I heard a light chuckle behind me. Realisation hit me, so I clicked my fingers and looked behind me, where and even more heartening sight awaited my gaze: Ryuu, frozen, with his eyes closed shut, a hand partially over his mouth and a toothy-smile behind it, confirmed my suspicion.

“Ohhh well... since we’re already here... might as well do this...”

I fish out my phone from my coat pockets and quickly peek at two (S/E/C) orbs through the black screen which immediately lights up. Pressing on the camera, I capture this rare sighting and store it carefully in my special little folder, tucked away somewhere in the corner of my phone gallery.

“Ahh, nothing beats the gathering of blackmail material.” I speak to myself as I shine a grin at the fresh picture.

Clicking my fingers once more, everything regains motion and life; the figure in front now trying his best to gather himself.

“Huuuuuh? What’s that? Are you perhaps disrespecting your superior executive? You think you’re in charge here, Puppy?” the madness in my voice seems to have frightened and confused him, but the amusement in my eyes probably gave me away.

Walking past him towards the creaking mahogany door, I quickly flash the recent picture in his face before tucking it away.

“Well come on then. Unless you want this to go straight to the broadcasting division.” I sang that last part.

Heavy steps followed right after, and a firm palm intertwined its fingers with my own. Sigh... once a Puppy, always a Puppy to me.
