Work Text:

Day 1 - Fuyumi

When Fuyumi steps into her home, she expects to be greeted by silence or the sound of her father training. What she doesn’t expect is to hear a voice greeting her, “Welcome home, daughter of the Number One Hero, the Number Two Hero Endeavor!”

She looks up in confusion, body still positioned to take off her left shoe, only to meet eyes with the man who took Endeavor’s Number Two title. She raises one eyebrow, and breaks eye contact to look at her father, a billion questions raising in her stare. Why are you home so early? Why is there a guest here? Why is the guest Hawks?

Because of her lack of response, she doesn’t realize the silence in the air until Endeavor clears his throat, “Hawks is here on business, Fuyumi,” he explains, answering one her unsaid questions, and the way Hawks perks up upon hearing her name does not go unnoticed by both Todoroki’s, “he has a few files to bring me. I instructed him to drop them off at my office, but he insisted on coming over… unannounced.”

She nods in understanding, and looks back to Hawks, who has said files tucked in his arms and two thumbs up with a toothy grin. “I figured he wanted to see these,” he says, referring to the paperwork, “some Super Top-Secret Hero things. You’d probably be suuuuper excited to hear about it,” sarcasm, she can tell by the way he bends his words and his over exaggerating facial expressions. She wants to laugh, but she doesn’t want to be rude.

Instead, she ops for finally taking off her shoe. Straightening herself up, she bows in the manner she was taught, “Nice to officially meet you, Hawks. My father has told me… many things about you,” she finally speaks. Many things indeed, but not a lot of them positive. She only knows what she hears about Hawks on the news and what her father says about him in passing.

Endeavor grunts, “I’ll take these,” he says, taking the files from Hawks, “if you would wait right here, Hawks,” he instructs, turning his body to the direction of his home office and making his way to put the files somewhere safe.

Hawks waits until he hears the door click shut, then he strides over to Fuyumi, “I knew Number Two had a daughter, but I didn’t know she was stunning,” he flirts at her, bodies a little too close for comfort (though there was a good distance in between them).

Something about his aura makes Fuyumi want to bite back at him, poke some fun. She takes note that her father isn’t here to tell her how to act around a house guest, so she lets herself (and her mouth) loose just a bit. “And I didn’t know that the Winged Hero had the nerve to hit on Endeavor’s daughter.” Okay, maybe she wasn’t the best at comebacks at the moment. She blames it on the way Hawks looks at her.

He lets out a laugh. “Guess I can’t help it, when there’s a lovely lady in the room I tend to get ahead of myself.”

Fuyumi’s face feels warm. She opens her mouth, about to respond, when she hears the door of her father’s office click open. Hawks notices as well, and takes the opportunity to take a few steps back from her. She wants to grin. Of course, he wouldn’t want to be seen getting comfortable with Endeavor’s only daughter.

Both Fuyumi and Hawks are sure that Hawks moved just before Endeavor stepped out of the room, but his eyes are darting back and forth between his daughter and his comrade. Fuyumi can’t tell if her face is just warm, or if her face is both warm and red, but she fights the urge to cover her cheeks with her hands. Hawks eyes are travelling around the room, as if he was always fixed in that one spot. Damn, was he good at keeping his cool (Fuyumi usually is, too, but not under this particular circumstance).

As Endeavor walks for the front door, Fuyumi steps away from it and makes herself more at home. “We’ll be on our way out. No need to wait up for me.” She bows in response as he opens the door for himself and for Hawks, letting himself out first while Fuyumi straightens herself and holds the door open for the Heroes.

“Very nice to meet you, Hawks,” Fuyumi looks up at him, and, to her surprise, he grabs her free hand to kiss it, a quick gesture before the Number One Hero can even turn to look at them.

“Likewise,” he says, toothy-grin and all.

How forward

Day 5 - Fuyumi

Hawks, Fuyumi thinks, is more annoying than anything the social media portrays him to be. Not that they would ever portray him as that or obnoxious, and not that his cockiness just screamed annoying to her whenever he spoke on the news. Those who interview him have called him charming, daring, a people-person.

Fuyumi isn’t sure how true those statements are, but over the course of the last few days, Hawks has shown up uninvited (at such weird times of the day), has put his feet on the coffee table (something that just irks her very soul, but she’s given up on trying to tell him to stop doing that), has taken control of the tv remote (seriously? It’s not his house), and has eaten so much food in places that aren’t the dining room (okay, granted he brings food for everyone, but she hates finding bits and pieces of crumbs everywhere after he has left). So far, the only charming thing about him seemed to be the different ways he smiled at her. But she would rather eat her dirty sock than admit that to him.

It feels like every day he finds something new to taunt her with. Yesterday, it was the clicking coming from his mouth, the day before it was humming some pop song that she thought she liked, but having heard him hum it nonstop for the better part of 3 hours just crawled up her skin. Today, it was scooting his chair inch by inch closer to her chair. She knew he was intentionally making the chair squeak against the ground, but she wanted to ignore it in hopes that he would drop the act.

Squeak.

Squeak.

Squeak.

“Stop doing that,” Fuyumi looks up from her phone, “you’re gonna ruin the floor.”

Hawks folds his arms and pouts, bottom lip out and everything, “But you aren’t paying attention to me today. I thought we could spend some quality time together.”

“You’ve been coming here for 5 days straight. That’s more than enough quality time don’t you think?”

With a long scratching sound emitting from the floor, the Hero was now sitting on the other side of the table right next to his target. A smug smirk appeared on his face. “Not nearly enough.”

He attempts to put an arm around her chair, when Fuyumi gets up, grabs her chair, and carries it to the other side of the table. They were facing each other once again. Hawks lets out a snicker, “You’re impossible, Todoroki.” He leans forward on the table, arms folded in front of him and eyes not leaving her own.

She breaks the contact by looking at the time on her phone. “What are you doing here so early anyway? Father won’t be back for another hour.”

Another winning smile seeps its way into his features. “To see you,” and he wasn’t shy to admit it. Endeavor arriving in an hour is exactly why he came here so early. He unfolds his arms by propping one of his hands under his chin. He’s boyish, she decides, and covers her face with her hand sighs.

But the cover-up and the sigh doesn’t do much to hide her tinted cheeks. How can he say things like that so casually? “You’re the impossible one,” she mutters, loud enough for him to hear.

Day 7: Hawks

Walking into someone else’s home unannounced is rude. But leaving the front door unlocked is dangerous. Hawks thinks he is doing the Todoroki family a favor when he walks in uninvited when their father isn’t home (again, he is there an hour before Endeavor gets there); what if they get attacked and Endeavor isn’t here? He’ll be the backup they need, he rationalizes.

He closes the door quietly behind him, then turns around and slowly locks the door. There you go, now everyone is extra safe!

He stands at the doorway just listening for a few moments. By now, he would have pinpointed where Fuyumi was, and he thinks he hears her footsteps down the hallway. The footsteps seem just a tad bit too heavy, though. Who else was home?

Hawks peeks his head further into the home, and sees a mess of white hair.

“Hawks?” Natsuo stops in his tracks, book bag slung lazily over one shoulder and a baseball cap gripped in one hand. His face is confused at first, then he smiles. “How’d you get in?”

Hawks points over his shoulder with a thumb, “The door was left unlocked again!”

“Ahh, really? My bad,” Hawks smiles. So Natsuo was the one who made it easy for him to come inside. “I was in a rush to get my things before my dad got home. Did you need anything?”

So polite. Hawks has the urge to ruffle his hair, but decides that would be weird. They weren’t that much different in height or in age. He settles for a light, playful punch at his arm. “Nah, I’m just waiting for Endeavor to come home. Hero stuff.”

Natsuo nods and puts his cap on. “Okay! I’ll be off then. Fuyumi is here, so don’t go throwing a wild party thinking you’re alone!” he teases, sliding his shoes on and giving him a quick wave before leaving Todoroki Manor.

He lets a smirk play across his face as soon as he hears the door shut. Fuyumi’s always here when he arrives. But he knows that she didn’t hear him enter the premises, otherwise she would have been there to greet him.

He steps further in the house now, shoes off and taking quiet steps. Where was she? He wanders to the common room, no one is there and the tv isn’t even on. He goes to check the kitchen, but it’s clean and pristine with no sign of people even living there. He hears water running down the hallway that Natsuo came out of earlier. The bathroom.

He tiptoes back to the common room, settling himself behind the couch, sure that he was out of view. He held back any sort of laughter that bubbled up inside him, his foolproof Scare Fuyumi plan was destined to succeed. This would be a good prank, she would walk in, totally unsuspecting, reach for the remote, and then he would—

“I can see your wings, Hawks.”

Oh, right. He forgot he had them.

He stands up from behind the couch, arms up and face in a grin, “You got me. I just wanted to surprise my favorite girl.”

Fuyumi is rolling her eyes as she walks to the coffee table to grab the remote. Hawks has already taken his seat on the arm chair off to the side of the couch when Fuyumi makes herself comfortable on the couch. “You’ve been coming around every day.”

“I’ve got a lot to talk about with Daddy Todoroki.” He glances at her from his angle, forming cheeky grin on his face when he sees her head snap his direction to give him a disgusted look.

“Don’t ever say that again,” she bites, embarrassment in her tone, “don’t address him like that!”

Hawks belts out a laugh, then it dies down a chuckle that he can’t contain, holding his sides and forming a small tear at the corner of his eye. “Alright, alright! Sorry.” His attention turns to the tv, “So what are you gonna watch today?”

-

Day 9: Hawks

Unlike a couple of days prior, Hawks decides that he will try to knock on the door to Todoroki Manor instead of just trying the doorknob first. So, with a paper bag of food in hand, when he steps up and does just that, he’s surprised that no one answers right away. He waits a few seconds, then tries rapping on the door again. Still, no answer. He takes it as a sign that he should just try the doorknob, and lo and behold, it’s unlocked once again.

He does as he did before, and locks the door once he has entered, then takes off his shoes. “Anyone home?”

The television is on in the common room, so he makes his way there in hopes of seeing Fuyumi watching the news. Maybe it was too loud for her to hear the knock on the door? “Fuyumi, were you ignoring me on purpose?” he calls out in a pretend-hurtful tone. But he doesn’t get an answer. He sees why when he’s finally in the common room.

Fuyumi is fast asleep on the couch, television remote still in hand with her cellphone on the coffee table. Hawks lets a low whistle, “Must have been a long day at school, huh?” He makes himself comfortable on the armchair he loves to claim when he visits. “Too many papers to grade, am I right?” He doesn’t get a response back, but he loves to talk to a sleeping Fuyumi regardless.

He leans his elbows on his knees to get a closer look of her from where he’s sitting. It’s not every day that Hawks sees a comfortable Fuyumi. This would be his first time since meeting her that she’s been calm, even if she was sleeping. He senses that she’s always on edge when he’s around, and he doesn’t blame her. They practically just met last week.

He tilts his head for a better view. “You’re even cute when you’re asleep,” he says softly, mostly to himself, but if there was even a small bit of chance that she could hear it he wouldn’t mind.

He thinks that she is responsive when he sees her body start to shift. He holds his breath in anticipation. Is she gonna wake up? No, no she’s not. Her body goes from facing the television to facing the back of the couch. He hears a small yawn come from her, and a tiny smack of the lips. He smiles. “How endearing.”

Hawks lets her sleep as he waits for Endeavor to get home. Even when he arrives, he doesn’t bother waking her up. Even she needs a break from his charm.

Day 11: Fuyumi

For the most part, though she would never admit this out loud, Fuyumi enjoys the company Hawks offers. So often, it’s just her at home with her own thoughts, and most of the time that gets boring. When she isn’t grading papers, making up lessons plans, or cooking meals for when her father gets home, Fuyumi is lounging around either tapping away at her phone, clicking away at the television, or doing mental exercises to keep her brain alert (Sudoku, cross words, the likes).

Hawks gives her something to do with her free time. She both hates it and looks forward to his drop-ins.

Right now, he’s testing her breaking point with the remote. It’s been misplaced. Again. She sighs and gets up to look for it. “Must you do this all the time? Where did you carry it off to now?”

Hawks is there, shit-eating grin and all, face looking at the television left on the news and head rested on his knuckles. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Fuyumi huffs. “The remote. You moved it again!”

His head snaps to her, a look of pretend-innocence plastered all over his face. “But, I haven’t moved from my seat at all!”

“You don’t need to move from your seat for your feathers to do the dirty work for you.” She eyes him before checking under the couch cushions.

She hears his chuckle from behind her. “Ouch, dirty work? I like to think of it as advanced hide-and-go-seek.”

She stands from her crouching point and moves to stand in front of the sitting Winged Hero, arms at her hips and head tilted to one side and lips pursed in a way that represented annoyance. “Hawks, give me the remote.”

Fuyumi swears she sees some sort of internal conflict in Hawks eyes, because he’s just staring at her dumbfounded with his mouth agape, no doubt because he wanted to say some smart comment back at her. Interesting. So, the tables have turned, she thinks. Who’s on the flustered side of things now?

If Hawks wants to play games, she could play his favorite one.

“Hawks,” she coos, dipping down to put her hands on her knees, the motion bringing her closer into his personal bubble. She sees him practically sink into the armchair, and if she wasn’t wearing her glasses, she would have missed that hint of pink that surfaced for one second on his features. It’s her turn to smirk.

“Yes?” she catches the crack in his voice the same time he seems to. Then he clears his throat to try again. “Yeah?”

She doesn’t want to get too close, but she attempts to lean in just shy of an inch more. “Tell me where the remote is, please?” She feels one of her hands begin to shake. She doesn’t think she can keep this up any longer, because being this close to someone is starting to scream uncomfortable.

She searches his eyes, and she doesn’t see any sign of him knowing her little inner turmoil. If her quirk weren’t ice-related, then maybe she would have already been red in the face.

Hawks breaks the eye contact and reaches under him to grab the remote. She grins, hands out and fingers wiggling, then closing when the remote hits her hand. “Good birdie,” she chirps, straightening up and walking her way to her spot on the couch.

When she glances at him, his still sunk into the chair, but one arm is crossed over him and the other is propped on the arm of the chair. His chin is in the palm of his hands and his fingers are curled up, covering the smug smirk she could so clearly see. She almost misses the murmured “Well played, Todoroki” coming from him.

Day 13: Hawks

Day 2 of thinking, and Hawks struggles to get his mind to wrap around the thought of Fuyumi besting him at his favorite, unnamed bad flirting game. Not that he minds, he doesn’t. It just caught him off guard. And if he were being honest with himself, he wouldn’t mind being caught off guard again. As long as it’s her.

But he pushes that thought aside quickly, when he hears Fuyumi re-enter the common room with a glass of water in each hand. She sets one down in front of him on the table, and brings the other to her mouth to drink before sitting down herself.

“You’re in civilian clothes today, Hawks. Shouldn’t a hero always be prepared when they’re out and about?” Does he hear a hint of playfulness in her voice?

He shrugs. “I guess so. But the costume doesn’t make the hero.” She nods at that. Then, allows herself to sit back further into the couch.

“Where do you keep your wings when you aren’t using them?”

He grins. “Curious today, aren’t we?” Instead of his usual lean towards the tv, he leans in her direction. He lifts an eyebrow. “What’s the occasion?”

She rolls her eyes. “No occasion. I’m just wondering. If you don’t want to answer—“

He puts up both hands to stop her, “No, no! I like the questions!” he clears his throat, and jabs his thumb behind him towards the corner of the room. “See that bag?”

“That messenger bag you always bring with you?”

He hums and nods. “When I’m not in my hero get-up or using my feathers, I actually place them in that bag.”

“So you stuff—“

“Not stuff. I place. My wings are my babies.”

“Oh, I’m sorry I used the wrong word,” she says, and he hears it as genuine. Sometimes, he forgets that Fuyumi was raised with better manners than him. He waves a hand, signaling it was alright, and she continues to speak. “What about your clothes? If you don’t have most of your wings on you, don’t you need to wear things with holes in the backs?”

Instinctively, he moves his head and casts his eyes downward to peek at his back. “For my shirts, yes. But I try my best to wear loose jackets so that I don’t have to buy things with holes in them.”

“I see.”

Hawks thinks that he never has had a proper conversation with Fuyumi. Most of the time, they’re watching the news while waiting for endeavor to get home, or he’s too busy trying to press her buttons. But he finds it nice that she’s still able to talk with him like this, like normal, even though he gives her a hard time on purpose.

“What made you so interested in my clothes just now?” he questions, lips turning upwards in an amused smile. “Were you wondering why is it that I manage to look handsome in both my hero costume and my regular attire?”

Another eye roll and then a scoff. “As if.”

“You know what else I look good in?”

She eyes him and says nothing. He doesn’t say anything either, only waits for a response. After a beat she sighs, “Okay. What else?”

He leers at her and winks. “My dating clothes.”

She groans at the same time he belts out a laugh. “You’re not that funny, Hawks,” she replies, a hand going to rub her forehead.

When he calms down he finds his voice again. “Not right now, but maybe if you go out to dinner with me some time, I can show you that I am,” he tells her. “And you can see how good I look on a date,” he adds as an afterthought.

In the end, she doesn’t give him an answer. And he doesn’t blame her, because it did sound like a joke on his end. He tells himself to let it go this time, but the next time he wants an answer to that.

But Hawks can’t wait for the next time, so he opts to try twice in a day.

He waits for the news to go to commercial when he clears his throat. “The offer still stands,” he says, trying his best to make light of the situation.

He takes a peek at her for her reaction, and he’s pleased to see that she’s blushing while trying to keep her eyes on the commercial for gum playing in front of her. “And what offer are you talking about?”

“The date.”

He sees her check her phone. “It’s July 23rd,” she replies with a straight-face. And he wants to laugh at her joke. It’s adorable.

He settles for a snicker. “I meant dinner.”

“I’m cooking Zaru Soba. Shoto is visiting me today.” Her blush isn’t disappearing, but he finds it amusing that she’s trying to play dumb while dodging his advances.

He doesn’t falter, though. Instead, he’s smiling again. “Dinner. You and me, any day you want. How’s that sound?”

Fuyumi finally looks at him, and he thinks his cool façade is gonna break because he feels his heart in his throat.

Wait, is he nervous?

“Well—“ Fuyumi’s sentence is cut short when they hear the front door open.

Both jump, but Hawks makes sure to put that same cocky, grinning mask he had on just moments ago when he gets up to greet Endeavor, shouting out a Dad! and jumping in for a hug that he knows will be rejected.

Day 14: Hawks

To say that Hawks knew he was charming was an understatement. He knew all too well. It’s why his popularity ratings are so high. And he was good at using his charms to his advantage. You could say that it worked on everyone. Almost everyone. Except the Todoroki’s.

To say that Fuyumi was hard to charm was also an understatement. She was almost impossible to charm in Hawks eyes. But he finds himself thinking time and time again that he would not have wanted it any other way.

As he reflects on the past two weeks of constantly visiting the Todoroki manor, he catches his thoughts reverting back to Fuyumi Todoroki, who he found napping again in the middle of the day. (She had left the door unlocked again, tsk tsk) At first these thoughts weren’t alarming; she was almost always the only one home when he stopped by before Endeavor would get home. And, even though it outwardly seemed like she was fed up with him, she always stayed to keep him company in the comfort of the Todoroki’s common room.

It wasn’t like he planned on flirting with her every time he stepped foot in the Todoroki manor, it would just happen. Most of the time, things just came out of his mouth. He didn’t mind making a fool of himself in front of her anyway, it was part of the charm. (Plus, he liked the variety of reactions and comebacks that came his way from her)

Now, he felt her getting the better of him, and that was entirely his own fault. Not that he would ever show it, but the times she chose to be bold around him had really put him in place. When she should (pretend to) flirt back, he would be so surprised that he felt his tongue tie itself into a knot. His tongue is in the same predicament now thinking about it.

He sighs. “You’re gonna make a mess of me,” he says to her sleeping form.

He stares at her for a while, taking his sweet time studying her features for the first time. He’s commented on her looks on multiple occasions, mentions how pretty he thinks she is, but has never quite looked at her.

“You know, it’s really cool that your hair does that thing,” he points out, and he tugs lightly on a strand of his own hair, “That thing where some of it is a different color. That’s, like, badass in a ‘I was born like this’ kinda way.”

He loves to ramble on and on and on when he finds her sleeping, not doubting that she could hear anything he’s even saying. He thinks that maybe she’s a deep sleeper.

She curls herself in a ball.

His mind wanders again, reflecting. And it goes to a few days ago, when he hid the remote, and the way she managed to make him crack. He bites a knuckle thinking about it, because dammit he’s supposed to be working his charm and sending her in a state of speechlessness. Then he thinks of yesterday. He never did get an answer.

He frowns just for a bit, then perks up again. “I’ll ask you again some other time.”

Then he wonders why he’s been going to such lengths to make the trip to her every day. He could easily just go to Endeavor’s office. He chuckles to himself, he’d much rather stay here than go there.

Because he knows Fuyumi will be home.

Then the realization that he was actively avoiding comes to light. The Number 2 Hero has developed a small crush on The Number 1 Hero’s daughter.

He doesn’t know whether to groan or to snort. But he knows that he’s already starting to form plans to win her over.

Hawks leans forward and puts his elbows on his knees. He turns his head to face her again, and gives a half-smile, “Guess I don’t have anyone else to blame but myself, huh?” he says, mostly to himself than to her.
