we ran slowly out of luck

Summary:

ten drabbles inspired by each episode of season 1

Notes:

what is this? a new story even though i'm in the middle of writing four others? yes, stop judging me. i was hit by runaways feels out of the blue a few days ago, so to try and coax myself into writing more of my wip(s), i decided to re-watch s1 and write a drabble inspired by each episode.

title taken from '24' by emmy the great.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: disconsolate

Summary:

set when gert was waiting at the coffee shop

Chapter Text

Gert had made a hundred flashcards and he still hadn't shown yet. She didn't know why she was still waiting.
(he stood me up).
Maybe she stayed because she had faith. Maybe she stayed out of some kind of twisted curiosity. Maybe she stayed to punish herself.
(the boy i like doesn't like me back, and here's the proof).
The small, nasty voice inside her, the one that sowed doubt and disdain whenever she felt vulnerable, had begun to make an appearance.
(why would he like me. i'm pathetic. i can't even gather the courage to send him a text).

Chapter 2: apprehension

Summary:

set during the montage where the pride and the runaways are catching up

Notes:

if i weren't only writing 100 words, i would have preferred to make this a few hundred words longer, expand on what Chase is feeling a bit, give it a proper ending, but i had already had to start over when my first ep 2 drabble went a couple hundred words over the limit (i'll be finishing it off and posting it in my ficlet collection in a few days). maybe one day i'll expand upon it, but for now this is what i'm posting.

Chapter Text

When the tension between Nico and her mother became too thick her even Chase to deal with, he excused himself, lying and saying he needed to ask Gert’s parents about the best herbal bruise remedies. He was halfway across the room when he realised that meant he would need to have a conversation with Gert. He spent the next second panicking, before awkwardly arriving in front of the Yorkes’ and holding out his hand, only to find himself pulled into a hug by Dale. Chase, not exactly accustomed with any type of fatherly affection, shared an uneasy look with Gert.

Chapter 3: flustered

Summary:

set in between gert and chase searching his dad's workshop and searching her parents basement

Notes:

so i wrote this while in the same room as my grandparents and i think you should all know that.

the next chapter will probably take a couple days to get up because i'm writing them after i re-watch each episode, but i can't stream at my grandparents place.

Chapter Text

Apparently, using the x-ray goggles to check someone out meant Gert isn’t responsible enough to use them. At least that’s what Chase said when he insisted she hand them over. Gert would’ve usually been able to come up with a rebuttal, but the combination of Chase talking about her looking at his dick and smirking had her too tongue-tied to deliver a coherent reply. Despite what he claimed, she knew that Chase would be equally immature if he had the chance, so in retaliation, she grabbed one of his father’s lead-lined smocks to prevent him from leveling the playing field.

Chapter 4: perturbed

Summary:

set during the conversation Chase has with his lacrosse team mates

Notes:

it has been a while because i am unreliable as fuck, but at least i updated. i'm probably going to update more infrequently now because i'm just about to start a big project that is going to take a lot of effort, so i guess the writing 100 words per ep thing succeeded in getting me writing again.

also this is canon compliant so trigger warning for brief mentions of rape.

Chapter Text

Gert turned and saw Chase’s lacrosse dipshits walking towards them, and decided that not even sitting with Chase was worth spending time with those morons. She was going to walk away, but she overheard what they were saying and was curious. As the conversation progressed, she only became confused. They were talking about the fight they had at the party, but it seemed like there was more to it than Gert’d assumed. She thought maybe it had been over some stupid guy shit, but then Chase implied that the lacrosse assholes almost raped a girl and her blood ran cold.

Chapter 5: jealous

Summary:

set during the conversation the group has at the coffee shop after they freed Alex

Notes:

i'm not even going to comment on how long it has been since i last updated. but i'm doing a whole series re-watch before i start s3 so i've decided to finally finish these.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The self-conscious pride Gert felt when Molly told everyone about her dinosaur surprised her. The delight she felt when Chase complimented her did not. He always managed to make her feel special. The jealousy Gert felt when she discovered that she wasn’t the only person Chase was keeping a secret for also wasn’t surprising. She was used to the sharp twist in her chest whenever Chase talked about Karolina. It was the way he looked at Karolina that really hurt. Like she was the most precious thing he had ever seen, and he couldn’t help but be enamoured by her.

Notes:

(but what gert didn’t know, what chase never wanted her to know, was the way he looked at her. Because she was his guiding star, the thing he oriented his entire life around, and he knew that when he looked at her he couldn’t keep his feelings off his face.)

that doesn't technically count as part of the drabble, but i wanted to include it anyway.

i am much happier with this drabble than i am with any of the others. i feel like it actually tells a complete story, unlike the rest. so yay! i hope this means that i'm slowly getting to be a better writer.

Chapter 6: combative

Summary:

set at the gala when Gert and Karolina talk

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Gert is a bad feminist. Here she is, fighting with another girl over a charming stupid boy. He isn't worth it, she knows that. Gert likes Karolina, values her friendship. And yet, she still pulled Karolina to the side and let all the nasty impulses she tries to keep hidden get the better of her. But Karolina isn't the perfect church girl anymore. She doesn't stand back and take Gert's selfishly-intentioned prying. So it hurts when Karolina speaks nasty words of her own, hurts when she is right, hurts when she toys with Chase, hurts when he listens to her.

Notes:

i don't love this, but once again the first time i started writing this drabble, it got way too long, so this is my second attempt. i don't think it really follows the actual events of the scene very well, but i can't bear to look at this anymore so this is what you get

Chapter 7: admiration

Summary:

set during the conversation when the runaways arrive at school

Notes:

i have decided to stop promising that i am going to finish this soon in the chapter notes, because i jinx it every time.

i didn't feel very inspired by ep 7, but i also did not want to be revising for my exam, so here we are.

Chapter Text

Chase knew Gert. He knew that she could be prickly. It wasn’t surprising when she walked over and made some scathing comment about double dates and escape rooms. And maybe if someone else had said that, he would be offended. But this was Gert, the most caring and selfless person he knew. So Chase looked past the biting tone and heard what she wasn’t saying. That she felt left out, excluded. So Chase looked over and acknowledged her, and hoped she could hear what he wasn’t saying. That he saw her, cared about her, would never leave her out again.

Chapter 8: devotion

Summary:

set just before chase gets to his room and finds old lace

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Gert is waiting for you.

Those five words were all it took to get Chase back to his room. He’d missed her so much during those two years when they weren’t friends, but now she’s here. There was a time when he’d thought that he’d lost her friendship forever. But Gert actually cares about him. At least, cares about him enough to come when he asks her. And while maybe she doesn’t care about Chase as much as he cares about her, having Gert as a friend will always be better than not having her in his life at all.

Notes:

i should be writing an essay. instead i wrote this. whoops?

Notes:

if you liked this, i sometimes post writing updates, unfinished work, and general gertchase and runaways content on my tumblr.
