Anyone Else but You

Summary:

Being best friends with Katsuki Bakugou since childhood, you've kept each other in check for a long time. A few months into your relationship with the blond, though, things start to get much harder to handle.

Chapter 1: New Transition

Chapter Text

The pleasant sounds of chirping birds could be heard coming from the newly blossomed trees lined up alongside the driveway. Morning sun shined brightly, encasing you in warmth as you opened the mailbox in front of you. Your mouth reflexively fell open in a gasp before a grin formed on your face, stretching from ear-to-ear with the white letter gripped sternly in your hands. Not a moment passed before you slammed the mailbox shut and dashed back inside your home; your (H/C) swayed and bounced in every fast step you took. Plopping yourself down on a chair in the living room, you scrutinized the letter you held for a few seconds and followed by ripping it out of the envelope. The most immediate detail you noticed in the letter that had fallen was it's vibrant red, white, and blue stripes cornered around the writing.

"Hello, (L/N) (F/N)! I'm sure you recognized the UA envelope the second you saw it!
We'll get to the point. You've been nominated to begin your high school years at UA through recommendations! Exciting, right? We've all taken a good look at your quirk, and needless to say, you're definitely something special with great capabilities. You're perfectly capable of saying no to this offer, but...it'd be a real waste if you did. We hope to receive word from you soon!
PLUS ULTRA!"

To finish off the breathtaking paragraph, All Might's signature was written on the bottom. In this moment, (F/N) (L/N) learned what it felt like to lose her voice due to the immense screaming that proceeded her reading that letter.

Life became extremely hectic for you ever since then, to say the least. Not to say that it wasn't before, though; having Katsuki Bakugou as your best friend and partner meant no day would go forgotten. From preschool to middle school, Bakugou's never failed to bring a lot to the table everyday. At this point, you've lost count at how many times just getting food with him has gone completely wrong; why can't this guy order like a normal human being? Does he know he doesn't have to furiously scream at the waiter and explode the menu when he didn't hear him the first time?

Speaking of Bakugou's anger - originally, he had planned to be the only kid from your middle school to get into UA, and was pretty mad when he heard about your letter of recommendation. He got over it, because it was you, but the same couldn't be said for one of your friends. After you passed you exam, though, you expected him to be even more livid with you, but instead he directed his anger towards said friend - Izuku Midoriya.

See...Bakugou's relationship with Midoriya was always really concerning to you. You were childhood friends with both of them, and it was really clear that they liked being around each other back then, so what happened in those years? You vividly remember the times where you and Midoriya would play follow the leader with Bakugou; you both were his biggest fans. You both desperately wanted to be like him, and he had no problems with that. Even today, he has no problems with you - just Midoriya; so why is that? You always wanted to ask Bakugou, and you've tried, but it hasn't exactly gotten you any answers.

"Haah!? You mean fucking Deku!? Don't even talk about that dumbass pebble. What's he fucking matter, huh?"

You learned not to do that again.

However, you couldn't help but be curious as well. Not angry, like Bakugou, but curious. You've known Midoriya since childhood, thus you also know he's never had a quirk. You even remember crying with him when he told you about the news; what could be more heartbreaking than that? After some thinking, you deducted that maybe he actually did have a quirk this whole time, but just never found it, somehow? That's really the only conclusion, though how he didn't manage to find a supposed superstrength quirk is beyond you. Regardless, it turns out that you, Midoriya, and Bakugou are all going to UA together now, which could be for better or for worse. And today was the day that chaos officially started.

For today being the first actual training day at UA, no one could say they expected it to be this level of...traumatic, really. Part of you halfway anticipated a break, after having the quirk assessment test paired with an expulsion threat the day before. You knew the second Bakugou and Midoriya were up against each other, it wasn't going to be pretty - which proved to be true. Midoriya's final winning counterattack left him completely, utterly debilitated - broken, even; it hurt you to merely look at him afterwards. His arms were no longer his original color of peach skin; they appeared as though they were blazed to ashes - eerily dark like burned paper. To everyone there, the fact that his own quirk did this amount of damage to him was quite unfathomable; you know you had definitely never witnessed nor heard of anything like it before. The screen you and all the other UA students had been watching for the past 15 minutes cut off as it panned to Bakugou's stunned eyes gazing towards the collapsing Midoriya. Thankfully, Midoriya ended up being alright, though not without a broken limb to boot; however, he wasn't exactly the main point of your concern after the training.

Peachy-painted skies with strawberry clouds coated nearly everything in a creamy pink tint; this indicated that another warm spring evening had now arrived.
"Katsukiiii!" your shout directed towards the explosive blond caught his attention, making him turn towards you. A few moments ago, you were with the rest of the UA girls watching through the window at Midoriya and Bakugou talking about something followed by All Might confronting him as well. You noted that the scowl on his face from before hadn't left as you ran past the entrance gate at UA.
"You gonna try to cheer me up? Well save your fuckin' time, I don't wanna hear it." he spat, angrily shoving his hands further in his pockets and continuing to walk.
"Well, yeah, can't say I wasn't planning on it," you raised your arm to rub the back of your head, "but I do still wanna know what was going on with Midoriya and All Might back there?"
"...Deku said some dumb shit to make me look stupid. That's it. I'm done talking about it." his response fell flat with his unadorned expression still remaining in place. Having known Bakugou for so long, you knew when he needed to just be in silence for a while; so you let your walk fall quiet for the next few minutes. Within the rather tranquil, fleeting minutes, you took a moment to more closely examine his face; you took note of quite a few bruises and scratches making home on his cheeks to his neck.
"...You mind if I heal those, Katsuki?" you inquired, pointing towards the left side of his face.
"Yeah. Fine. Whatever." the monotone sound in his voice accompanied his eyes directing themselves to the ground. You both had now paused treading home, standing in place as you reached the first corner walkway currently filled to the brim with traffic. While you waited for the pedestrian signal to turn green, you brought your hands to the more beaten side of Bakugou's grimacing face. Your soft fingertips gently brushed against the various cuts and bruises just momentarily, not taking more than a few seconds for the garnishes to fade completely.
"Yup, that's a lot better," a giggle escaped your lips, "bloody cuts and bruises kinda ruin your pretty boy face, y'know?" you flashed him a toothy grin.
"Oh, shut the fuck up," his harsh words contradicted the visible half-smirk half-smile he was making no effort to hide. You simply laughed again, reaching down to interlock your hands as you both proceeded to walk home together.

"...A healer, huh?"

...You must've just imagined that raspy, dry voice you thought came from around the corner. A quick glance you took behind you told you that nobody was there. No need to worry.
