Work Text:
Hoseok hated phone calls. He doesn’t care who it was, texting was a thing for a reason. That or the person could just come over or something. Whatever it was, there were better alternatives for calling, and Hoseok was grateful for them. Everyone he knew either had the same mindset or respected Hoseok’s preferences.
Which is why he didn’t understand why his phone was blasting his obnoxious ringtone, vibrating steadily across the top of his desk, echoing the sound. He stared at the ugly selfie of Jungkook on the screen, ggukie and two bunny emojis running across the top. His phone had vibrated enough that it was at the end of the desk, threatening to fall over, but Hoseok couldn’t bring himself to answer. Thankfully, the call ended itself and he could sigh in relief. Maybe Jungkook would just text him instead.
But of course… he didn’t.
Once again, his phone lit up with the same picture and caller ID and this time, his phone did topple over the end of the desk, landing flat on . Hoseok lunged himself at the floor to pick up his phone, heart racing in fear that the object could be damaged. Turning over and examining the phone, Hoseok relaxed when he saw it was intact. This time, he did respond to the call.
“Yah! You better have money to pay for my phone!” Was the first thing he said when he answered.
“Eh? What did I do?” He heard Jungkook gasp, confusion clear in his voice.
“My phone is the unfortunate victim of all your damn phone calls!” He huffed, moving to sit on his bed, praying this phone call would end soon. Jungkook laughed on the other end of the phone, his voice low, sending little waves of butterflies through Hoseok.
“Sorry, Hyung!” There was no remorse in the youngers voice whatsoever and Hoseok could tell he was smiling.
Then there was that awkward silence that Hoseok dreaded when it came to phone calls. The elder looked around the room in search of something, anything, to talk about. Then it suddenly hit him as to why he was in this situation in the first place.
“Why are you calling me?”
He was met with silence on the other end of the line, almost as if Jungkook was thinking of a response, which the elder found a little weird. Did he not know why he called?
“Jungkook-- “
“Oh! Um.. I wanted to know if you wanted to grab some lunch later?” He rushed out. Hoseok felt his face morph into one of confusion. Lunch?
“Couldn’t you just text? You’re always calling me for such little things.” He asked, curious as to what the younger’s response would be. Was this just a spontaneous call? Was everything okay?
“Ah, hyung come on, don’t make me say it..”
Now Hoseok was really confused. He had no idea what Jungkook was referring to. He was really starting to be concerned. Maybe something was actually wrong.
“What? Say what? Kookie, is everything okay?”
There was silence again but this time Hoseok waited for Jungkook to say something. Whatever was going on, it sounded like he needed to take his time with what he was going to say. He heard the younger clear his throat.
“Well you see hyung.. I just like hearing your voice.”
…
…
What?
WHAT?!
Hoseok blinked a few times and he felt his heartbeat begin to accelerate. There’s no way he heard him correctly. There was absolutely no way Jeon Jungkook, the boy Hoseok had had a crush on for god knows how long, only called him to hear his voice. Nuh uh, no way.
“Hyung? You still there..?”
The older sputtered and opened his mouth to say something, but nothing would come out.
“I uh-- I-- I’m sorry what? I don’t understand.”
Jungkook laughed. “I don’t think I can be more forward than that Hyung. I call you all the time because I like hearing your voice. It’s nice. Like you.. I like you as well.” A beat of silence. “So.. lunch?”
Hoseok felt like he was going to explode. His heart was going to beat out of his chest and he felt hot all over. What was happening? He was shaking. Jungkook did not just say that.
“I um-- um huh?”
Jungkook laughed harder. “I’ll pick you up in half an hour?”
“Yeah.. okay.” That was all he could really say.
And then Jungkook hung up and Hoseok let his phone fall onto his lap. He felt the corners of his lips pulling up into a wide smile.
Suddenly, he didn’t hate phone calls that much anymore.
