Toshi and Inko's American Adventure

Summary:

Snapshots of Inko and Toshinori's American road trip honeymoon.

Notes:

First My Hero Academia fic Heyyyyo. I started this anime like 3 weeks ago and I watched all of it and I LOVE IT. I also ship these two something fierce, in that cute older couple kinda way. Where they just take care of each other. A couple of notes---Sorry if there are glaring errors with the wedding part. I'm not sure if the type of kimono would be appropriate since Inko had been married before. I just thought Toshinori in traditional clothes would be so cute!
Not a lot of plot, I just like Toshi being an American nerd (I included the headcanon of him being half American even though I think the allusions to America in the series is because All Might is the the Western ideal of superheroes) and getting do mom and dad touristy things.

Work Text:

Money had never been something that Toshinori Yagi had spent too much time concerning himself with. Of course he got a hefty salary and there were also the royalties that came in from the ubiquitous merchandise that featured his likeness. This all meant that as long as he could remember, he had had more money than he ever knew what to do with. He lived simply, and for most of his career he had solely focused on fighting villains and saving people. He gave away vast amounts anonymously to various charities, but still held onto a generous amount just in case something happened to his hero career.

Well something did happen to his life as a hero. It ended . Spectacularly. In front of the entire nation. And now he was doing something that he never thought he would get to do --- he was going on his honeymoon.

Just as he had ignored finances, his love life had never been an issue to him before. Being the Symbol of Peace gave him enough fulfillment, and dating would’ve just distracted him from that. And plus, he never could’ve been sure who was actually interested in him and who just wanted to be caught on All Might’s arm. That was until he had passed along his power and then met the mother of his successor.

Inko Midoriya had surprised him in many ways. They had fallen into a routine over coffee dates and walks in the park, meetings that Toshinori had set up to assure Inko of her son’s safety and progress. A gentle companionship had developed and Toshi would find himself wrapped up in her apartment in the dead of winter, warm cup of tea in his hands while sitting under a kotatsu, listening to Inko rattle on for hours. It had been so nice, to be taken care of. To have someone who saw him just for who he was, an older man in a slightly less than functional body, not a former hero withered from his once great form. Inko often commented that it was hard thinking of Toshinori as the man that her son had idolized all those years, and while some might have been offended at her statement, she would smile sweetly at him and say, “You’re just Toshi to me now.” Toshinori found that he liked being just Toshi for once. It was all he could be anymore, and it was all Inko needed him to be.

Before their marriage was official they decided to move to a rural hot springs village, buying a house there with Toshinori’s excess funds. Visiting the local onsens would help Toshinori’s damaged muscles and the seclusion would afford them a bit more privacy. Izuku was a bit glum about having his parents live so far away, but Inko had waved him off, saying he was so busy climbing the hero ranks that he never visited anyway.

The wedding itself took place in the early morning at a local shrine in the village they had claimed as their new home. Izuku had been the only guest in attendance, Toshinori saying he wanted to keep the ceremony family-only.

“Well that certainly keeps the numbers low,” said Inko.

“Yes! And that means I can be one of the few that gets to admire you in your wedding kimono,” said Toshi, smiling his wide grin down at the woman. “Oh Toshi!” remarked Inko, playfully shoving him.

And she had looked beautiful that day, wrapped up in the white shiromuku. She had marveled at how handsome her boys looked in their hakama, especially Toshinori with his blonde wild hair fashioned into a bun. “I can’t believe I am seeing you in traditional clothes! I don’t know why, I guess I’d thought you would come in a suit,” Inko had said as he took his arm.

The ceremony had been short and simple and the three had feasted afterward in their new small home. It had been Izuku who had brought up the idea of a honeymoon, which had caught Inko by surprise. “Oh I don’t know, Izuku. I mean we already spent so much moving here,” she said.

“But we do have plenty left,” said Toshinori, setting down his chopsticks.

“But you never know what could happen! We might need to not touch it, or invest it,” she argued.

“You are still working and the royalties from everything All Might-related are still coming in. It’ll take a while for that to dry up, maybe when young Izuku is number one and everyone forgets about me,” said Toshinori. Izuku became flustered and awkwardly protested against his statement.

Toshinori smiled at his new stepson and then looked back at his new bride, “So where would you like to go?”

Inko’s first honeymoon had been to Okinawa and she hadn’t done much travelling after that. She’d been to Korea and China, and had almost gone to Australia on a trip with her first husband but had had to cancel when found out she was pregnant with Izuku shortly before booking the tickets. The world seemed so vast to her, she wasn’t sure where to begin.

“Um, well, you could show me America, if you want. I know you love it there,” said Inko. Toshinori’s mother had been American and he had spent some time visiting relatives there in his youth. He loved telling the stories of the adventures he had had.

At the suggestion, his eyes had sparkled and one might have expected him to transform into his All Might form, something he hadn’t managed to do in years. Izuku had interjected, “Mom, America is really big, I think you need to pick a city or a region.”

“Nonsense! It’s open and free! We’ll drive,” said Toshinori, gripping a fist in determination.

Izuku had been unsure of the suggestion, arguing how unsafe it seemed at which Toshinori had leveled him with a glare, “Do you think I am completely helpless, young man? That I would put your mother, my wife , into danger?” Izuku had almost melted in shame and fiercely shook his head crying out his apologies.

Once the idea took hold Toshinori was off on a mission, researching everything he could about sightseeing, making lists of everything they wanted to see. He put up a map of the US on a corkboard in the office of their house and used pins and yarn to map their route. He knew there was no way they would be able to see everything and he regretfully marked off Mount Rushmore and some of the more kitschier landmarks off the list.

Finally came the day when Izuku was seeing them off at Narita Airport. Toshinori was buzzing with excitement, gripping his backpack straps tightly, while Inko checked for the tenth time that they had all of his medications. Izuku kissed his mother on the cheek and hugged his stepfather before Toshinori was dragging Inko through security, the young man yelling out to remind them to send postcards and updates.

And luckily Inko had been diligent in making sure her son was kept informed on the goings-on of her second honeymoon.

San Francisco

The email Izuku got his mom came the night their plane had landed in California. Attached to it was picture of a passed out Toshi, laying facedown on a hotel bed.

He managed to fall asleep on the plane which I am grateful for. I was afraid his muscles would cramp having to be shoved into that tiny seat for 13 hours. I made him do laps around the front half of the plane, though the poor dear had to bend slightly because of the ceiling. I’m so glad we did first class, for his sake but also because the service was wonderful! And the food! I had no idea what I’ve been missing out on. But anyway, Dad was excited again once we landed and went and collected the rent car. It’s nice but I think maybe he should’ve opted for bigger model, his knees hit the steering wheel! And you know I’m not the most confident driver, but driving on the right side of the road? No thank you. But we had a lovely dinner tonight, and then we walked hand in hand in the park around the Golden Gate Bridge. Dad’s already putting his English to work, though it must be rusty considering the confused looks we get. I’m glad I packed that pocket dictionary! :)

Redwoods

Izuku had been suiting up for patrol when he had gotten a text message from his mom. In it was first a picture of Toshinori with his arm around Inko with a large forest behind them and then a picture of Toshinori with his arms around a portion of one of the massive tree trunks.

I told Toshinori this really must be where his people are from. Toshinori-sized trees! :O

Grand Canyon

The newlyweds had driven south through the desert for a few days, sending sporadic pictures to Izuku, such as Toshinori posed next to a saguaro cactus. Finally they reached their destination in Arizona and Inko sent Izuku an email.

So many tourists here, but your Dad hasn’t been recognized once! He told me that Americans only care about American heroes and I think he was right on the money. But Izuku, the view here is amazing! Our hotel balcony backs up to the canyon and Toshi and I could drink tea out there for hours, just admiring the view. He told me in his prime he could’ve leapt over the whole thing, It’s much nicer to take in your surroundings I think.

The Rockies and Yellowstone

The couple then headed East and drove up through the Rocky Mountains, and Izuku got a series of postcards one after another showing off the scenic nature. They got to Yellowstone and Izuku had laughed at the picture of Old Faithful spouting into the air which his mother had captioned with “Reminds me of Katsuki!”

Texas

They turned South and hit Texas, and Toshinori and Inko were able to stay at a ranch owned by an old friend of Toshinori, a fellow retired hero. Inko had loved it there.

The animals are all so sweet, Izuku. I’ve been feeding the horses apples every morning. They keep trying to eat your Dad’s hair though, I think they think it’s hay :D. The portions here really are ridiculous though, they tried to get Dad to eat a steak the size of his head yesterday. Really--what’s a man without a stomach supposed to do with that? The hospitality here is amazing though. They gave Toshi his own cowboy hat that he is now in love with, I know I’m going to struggle keeping him from wearing it out in the village when he get back :-/

Attached was a picture of Toshinori wearing said hat with a straw between his teeth looking intensely off into the distance.

New Orleans

Izuku was met with an email when he came home from an uneventful patrol that announced they had made it to New Orleans.

Such an interesting city Izuku! So bright and colorful! A mixture of cultures. Toshinori had his palm read by a lady in lawn chair wearing a colorful shawl. She told him some stuff about bright things in his future and he nodded and kissed me saying that he already knew about that. Such a sap! We went out to eat at a restaurant in the French Quarter. The food here is so spicy! Mitsuki and her crew would love it here. But there was a jazz band and we danced until we were out of breath, which of course isn’t hard for Dad but still. It’s awkward dancing when there’s such a height difference between us, but I don’t mind just wrapping my arms around his waist and swaying. Oh Toshi’s not even bothering to try and communicate with the locals here by the way, their accents are so thick I’m afraid the strain would make him start coughing up blood.

St. Louis and Chicago

Izuku received some pictures in a text message of the next few cities they hit. Inko declaring:

It’s back to the big cities now, and Dad has become overly confident in his driving. It takes everything to get him to park it in a less dense area and use public transport.

The pictures showed them standing under the St. Louis arch and on the glass floor of the Willis Tower. Or at least Inko was, Toshinori was pressed up against the wall, his face in a grimace. It’s surprising that a man who used to leap hundreds of feet into the air could get such bad vertigo.

Washington D.C.

The email the young hero received contained a lot of pictures of various landmarks and locations.

What an interesting city Izuku! So much history, your Dad was so excited to explain everything to me. The distance between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial is a lot longer than it looks in the films by the way, we had to stop so Toshi could catch his breath (don’t tell him I said that though :P). And guess what? We witnessed a villain attack! It was just a bank robbery but those American heroes sure are flashy. They dealt with the villains pretty swiftly.

New York City

They finally reached their last destination and Izuku got his last email.

We went on a carriage ride in Central Park which was very romantic. It was nice being cuddled up against Toshi under that fluffy blanket :). And then we went to the Met which was great, though very crowded and hey! Dad got recognized a few times! Some of them were Japanese tourists like us but a New Yorker came up and asked for his autograph. Isn’t that something? It’s an interesting place here, with so many cultures and museums, but it’s so large and noisy. I am definitely looking forward to getting back to our little village.

Love,

Mom and Dad.

Tokyo

Izuku came to pick them up at the airport, paying for a axi to bring them all the way to their home. When Inko found out, she had admonished him as he put the couples’ bags into the trunk, “Baby, that’s too much, we could’ve taken the bullet train!”

“It’s fine, I got a raise,” said Izuku, slamming the trunk closed.

“Eh? What for?” asked Toshinori.

Izuku looked at his parents sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head “Uh for breaking the top ten.”

Inko gasped and flung her arms around her son, congratulating him with tears in her eyes. Toshinori slung a lanky arm around them both saying, “You’ll be at number one in no time, son.”

On the way out of the airport, Toshinori was already dozing off, while Inko was flipping through the pictures on her phone, smiling to herself and telling Izuku and the driver small stories about their adventures. She had a few shirts for Izuku from various locations. Izuku was sure that their house would be full of souvenirs.

Izuku peeked back at them from his position in the passenger seat and regarded his parents warmly, happy to know their new life together had started so wonderfully. They truly deserved it after everything they had been through. They deserved normal.
