Falling in love with: Stars

Summary:

You enjoy a heartwarming moment with Jungkook under the stars. Drabble. Part of the "Falling in love with... " vignette series. Crossposted from my Tumblr blog honeyyvee.

Work Text:

“You’re burning your marshmallows too much!” you giggle as you retrieve your stick from the heat.

“So? I like them toasty.” He shrugs, stubbornly sticking the brochette of 5 plump marshmallows further into the fire.

“That thing will turn to a gooey mess in about 3 seconds” you point out with your own brochette.

Jungkook sticks out his tongue at you, and soon enough his marshmallows slide off the stick in strings of white goo.

“Waah!”

“Okay maybe two.” You fight back a shit-eating grin as you look on with amusement at the scene unfolding before you. Jungkook is staring with his eyes blown wide at the stick that barely holds now two marshmallows. His mouth loosely agape as he stares in comical befuddlement at the missing pieces on his brochette.

You take a bite off your own warm sweets. “Consider yourself lucky those two even stuck with you.”

His gaze drifts back to yours, a slightly perplexed look on his boyish features. A soft smile spreads across your lips as you can’t help but stare back into the gleaming lights of his beautiful doe eyes. They fickle with the warmth of the bonfire’s heat, and you helplessly watch in wonder as they glow for you. Your heart shifts uncomfortably inside you.

“Yeah, yeah, maybe you were right” he concedes, flashing you his bunny teeth smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Your heart drops and leaps in your throat. Woah man, uncalled for.

You feel like choking on air, except you’re actually choking on the crackers you were munching away. It takes barely a couple of coughs before the sweet boy runs to your rescue with his own bottle of water in hand. For a stupid, childish reason, you’re ridiculously hesitant of drinking from Jungkook’s bottle. You throw a couple of raspy ‘I’m fine’s that do nothing to appease jungkook as your coughing fit gets worse. He practically shoves the uncapped bottle into your hands.

You feel like a child as your heart rate skyrockets at the touch of your lips with the bottle. You empty its contents, drowning out the stupid lingering thought of a 6 year old version of yourself screaming at the idea of both of your lips indirectly touching.

“Thank you” you croak out averting his gaze, looking for the trash bag to throw the plastic away. You turn around and notice he’s already back to his spot on the log perpendicular to yours, happily munching away at his marshmallows and crackers.

You feel your cheeks heat as you steal glances at him. Maybe it’s the peaceful silence of the night enveloping you, the warmth of the fire, or the fact that both of you are alone, but you can’t help but be drawn to him. To his twinkling eyes like stars.

“Pass me the bag of marshmallows” he interrupts your thoughts, pointing at a spot behind you.

“Nope. No sir, no more marshmallows for you.” You cross your arms over your chest.

“There’s still my brother left and there’s only five more marshmallows in the bag. You had your share and lost your chance Kook, I’m sorry. ” You bat your eyelashes at him.

“Since when do you care about your brother? ”

“Woah look! You can clearly see Ursa Major from here ” you ignore his comment, suddenly immensely interested in the night sky.

“Wha- are you trying to switch the topic?”

“Just look!” you point to the sky with insistence.

“I can’t find it…” You hear him mutter. You steal a glance to find him scrunching his nose up at the night sky.

“Ugh, come here dummy. Let me show you where it is.” You hesitantly offer, and Jungkook perks up at your words like a puppy that’s been promised a treat.

He rushes to your side on the log and sits awfully close for your comfort. Shoulders rubbing, legs touching kind of close. Which, you note, is a bold move coming from him. Where is the shy bunny you make fun of?

“Well… ?” he drags the word as he stares deep into your eyes “Show me.” He smiles, bunny teeth showing and all. You gulp. Damn.

“Oh, I’ll show you. You’ll see.” You break away from his gaze.

"It’s right there, the brightest cluster of stars. They form a square, it has something like a tail coming out of it.” You point out.

It’s a simple enough explanation, but it seems to go over Jungkook’s head as you watch him stare with wide eyes at the sky in obliviousness. The adrenaline rush from being so close to his face throws your judgement out the window as you take his hand in yours, and point to the specific spots on the sky for his eyes to follow.

"Oh…” His eyes grow comically wide in amazement, a soft blush dusting his cheeks.

His skin is warm under your touch and soon enough your palms get sweaty. You drop his hand like it burns. And it does: your skin buzzes in excitement.

Both of your heads turn at the same time, your noses almost touching. You have his undivided attention, and you find yourself lost in his big bright eyes for what feels like eternity.

“Is this the part where both of you suck face? Because if that’s the case I can go back where I came from.”

You both jump out of your skin. “That’s not -!”

“Yeah sure, I’ll just take my marshmallows and leave.” Your brother interrupts, casually strolling towards you to retrieve the bag of sweets.

“Geez, you can cut the tension between you two with a knife.” He chuckles.

“No Dohyun, it’s not like that! I was just showing Jungkook the Ursa Major.” You rush to explain.

“Oh, you were?” He raises an eyebrow.

“Yeah, this dummy couldn’t find it without me.” You scoff, playing innocent.

“Oh I’m sure he couldn’t… Especially since Jungkook was a boy Scout for five years” He comments, ever as casual. Your jaw drops.

“Top of his troop, the very best there was…” he smirks, and the air between you grows heavier. “Goodnight you two.” He winks, a shit-eating grin plastered on his face as he leaves for his tent with the marshmallow bag in hand.

Both of you scurry away to your respective tents after a hurried exchange of goodnight’s. Minutes tick away as you remain sleepless inside the warmth of your sleeping bag. Your heart hammers against your ribcage at the memory of the stars, and how close they were to your reach. A pair of twinkling eyes, bright like constellations.
