Work Text:
Bakugo sat up from his bed, the bags under his eyes darker than the day before. The usual routine as he noticed and stopped panicking over it since it was deemed useless to care at this point.
He lifted a weak hand to grab his phone, thankful his mother had plugged it in for him. The night before he was far too weak to stay awake on his own so he didn’t know what time he fell asleep or how long he had been sleeping. Energy was a rare thing for him so most his days were spent under his covers, always cold despite how many layers he had covering him.
The time read 11:48. Almost noon. This was early for the ash blond to wake up, so he definitely wasn’t complaining. He rubbed his face and let out a sigh, trying to force himself out of bed. It took a few minutes, or maybe a lot, Katsuki didn’t know. It felt like an eternity no matter how long it took.
His legs trembled underneath him, causing him to clench his jaw at the unsteadiness. He leaned against his nightstand, taking a step or two before stumbling, catching himself on his wardrobe. This was further than he had walked in the past week.
Bakugo was about to take another step until his mother walked in, her immediately rushing to his aid. “What have I told you about leaving bed without any assistance?” She huffed, not having her usual bite to her words. Her bite had left months ago whenever she found out her son really was slipping through her fingers.
“I can do it..” he muttered coldly, his voice barely audible. “I don’t need bullshit assistance.” He was determined, too much so. He knew he shouldn’t try to do things on his own but it was better than feeling like a nuisance to everyone around him.
Mitsuki softly sighed and shook her head, forcing a weak smile. “Katsuki.. you don’t want to strain your body much more. You need to save up as much energy-“ he cut her off.
“What energy?! There is none!” He barked, glaring up at her. His temper was oddly shorter than before, though now he had less energy to express it. “I-I don’t have long so isnt it my choice on how I spend my ‘energy’?!” He weakly lifted his hands for a small attempt at his finger quotes.
Mitsuki sharply stared at her son, trying to ignore all the conflicting emotions she felt at once. She was upset Bakugo yelled at her, but was thankful he had the strength to move around and raise his voice. It was only the little things that could brighten her mood these days.
“Eijiro is coming over later. He wanted to spend time with you since he’s missed you at school.” She ran her small hands through Bakugo’s hair, both of them enjoying the small touches. Bakugo huffed and gave a small nod, thinking of it to be useless to argue about seeing anybody when he was in this state. It’d probably be best for him to see the red head now as he definitely wouldn’t be looking any better anytime soon.
The blond had let out a distressed groan, his energy immediately fading again upon hearing the red-head’s name. Loud. Bubbly. Optimistic. Everything Bakugo wasn’t and that was a pity.
Mitsuki gave a nod when she got tha groan as a response rather than any verbal words. Without saying anything else, she turned and left, her son hearing her say something about breakfast. Bakugo tried to think of what she said, taking a moment to process it before nodding, finally realizing how hungry he was.
Yes, it was almost lunch time, but since it wasn’t even noon yet, Bakugo always took it as a chance to have breakfast. Anytime he’d wake up early enough was a small victory for him, loving his mother’s cooking of classic Japanese breakfast.
The blond grabbed his small portable oxygen tank, it was small, not too much weight for the frail boy. He placed on the nose piece, letting the tubes run over his ears and meet against his chest to only lead down the the tank he could carry as a backpack.
