Where is she?
Teshima never takes his eyes from the clock, bouncing his leg in an attempt to burn nervous energy.
Seriously, where is she?
Aoyagi said she would be back by 8pm at the latest. But it’s 8:40pm and there’s still no sign of her.
It’s dark out there and Teshima knows that basically anything can happen on a bicycle ride. You can crash and fall off and get knocked unconscious. You can get hit by a car. Your bicycle can get a puncture and you have to stop at the side of a busy road to fix it. You can get hurt or left stranded or… killed in various ways.
He and Aoyagi usually never go out alone. But his datemate needs to practise for a race at the weekend and Teshima’s sore back has left him unable to ride for a few weeks, so she went out alone.
She’s okay, right? He’s just being paranoid, right? There’s no way something could have happened to her… right?
“Calm down,” he mutters to himself, anxiety pulsing inside him.
But he can’t. What… what if someone has hurt her? What if Aoyagi was stood at the side of the road and some evil person pulled over and…? What if someone abducted her?
No, he has to calm down. He can’t let himself get carried away.
She’s safe.
Isn’t she?
When the back gate slams, Teshima jumps. He hurtles out into the yard and…
Aoyagi stands there, both her and her bicycle covered in mud. She stares at him, a slight smile twitching on her face.
“Sorry I’m late,” she mumbles. “I crashed earlier.”
All that pent up anxiety bubbled away, and Teshima darts over. He hugs her, not caring about the mud, and whispers, “I’m so glad you’re safe.”
