“Xuanxuan!”
Shi Qingxuan peeks his head inside the room, a bright smile on his face. He Xuan looks up from his documents, his hands paused in mid air. He had a frown on his face, but Shi Qingxuan was a master at reading his husband’s normally monotone features, and he could see the way his eyes softened at the edges. Like a stone cracking just a bit to let the sunlight gleam over the hidden diamonds inside.
Shi Qingxuan wobbled over, not yet used to the newly acquired limbs that adorned him. He stumbled a bit, and from the corner of his eye he saw He Xuan jolt slightly in his seat.
He rolled his eyes at him playfully.
“Really, I’m fine! I’m not that delicate you know?” As proof, Shi Qingxuan waved his arms back and forth, showing off his undelicateness. “You don’t have to wo--”
As if the heavens were mocking him, when Shi Qingxuan walked through the threshold, to busy waving his arms, he didn’t see the bottom floor board and his foot, oh god his foot , got stuck.
Shi Qingxuan watched the world fall around him.
Shi Qingxuan didn’t know how he got such bad luck.
A swift flash of black invaded his vision, before sturdy arms embraced him, and Shi Qingxuan’s face met He Xuan’s furrowed one. Shi Qingxuan’s arms automatically found their way to He Xuan’s neck, latching on tightly.
“Forgive me for worrying so much, my dear,” A soft voice resounded near his ear, sending shivers up his spine, “But with your uncoordinated movements, I’m afraid you’ll hurt yourself one day.”
“I’m fine,” Shi Qingxuan scoffed, “I won’t hurt myself.”
He Xuan’s hands were supporting his back and the curve of his knee, keeping Shi Qingxuan from moving and hurting himself from any other offending objects that might, god forbid , harm him. He Xuan’s hands were naturally cold, and they seeped through Shi Qingxuan’s robes, causing the hairs on his body to rise up.
He Xuan merely glanced at him before carring him to the bed that he had in his study, when the documents were too much and he needed to rest his eyes. Not that he uses it much anymore, Shi Qingxuan thinks idly.
Whenever He Xuan got irritated at the idiotic ghosts in his domain or the constant pilling documents on his desk, he’d come find Shi Qingxuan everytime. Honestly, Shi Qingxuan didn’t even know how his XuanXuan managed to find him every time in this huge palace of his. He’d then wordlessly drap himself over Shi Qingxuan, not mattering if Shi Qingxuan was reading or snacking on some sweets and bury his face on some body part of his. Most of the time it was his shoulder or head, but one time he had passed out on Shi Qingxuan lap and Shi Qingxuan was glad that He Xuan wasn’t conscious enough to see the ugly splotches of red that had made its way up Shi Qingxuan’s cheeks. Shi Qingxuan flushed at the memory.
He Xuan gingerly set him on the bed before softly brushing away the stray hairs on his face. Shi Qingxuan closed his eyes and leaned to the touch, curling around the cold fingers like a cat. He heard He Xuan’s soft huffing laugh, the sound curled around the air, and Shi Qingxuan sought after it greedly.
“Be careful next time,” He Xuan murmured softly.
“Mmm,” he hummed back, “You worrywort.”
The fingers left his face, Shi Qingxuan opened his eyes and was just about to complain when the ice cold fingers came back to his face, cupping it this time. Shi Qingxuan was forced to look up at his husband, blinking up at him in question.
“I don’t want to see you hurt,” he spoke solemnly at him, “I don’t think I can handle it again, my dear.”
His brows were furrowed, lips set to an avaggratting line. Shi Qingxuan could see the flickers of deep seated fear and panic in his husband’s and itched to kiss away his worries.
And that’s exactly what he did.
His lips numbed slightly when they met He Xuan’s own, but he pressed on, despite the rising blush tainting his skin. The kiss was short and he pulled back as abruptly as he started, relishing in the widened eyes and shocked expression on He Xuan’s face.
“I’m not made of ice,” Shi Qingxuan continued on stubbornly, warm hands grasping He Xuan’s own equally cold ones. “You won’t break me again, XuanXuan, trust me.”
He Xuan’s lips twitched at the nickname, but the harsh plains of his face had softened into quiet adoration, all directed towards Shi Qingxuan.
Shi Qingxuan grinned and delved back to kiss him again.
He doesn’t think he’s ever been so lucky in his life.
