Work Text:

JK
hyung? are you awake?

Yoongi grumbles a little as he stretches his arms above his head, blinking at the bright lights that surrounded the studio. The clock on the wall tells him it’s a little past two in the morning, a little past the time he promised he’d be home. He rubs at his eyes and saves the progress he’s made so far, briefly considering camping out for the night.

He shakes his head, runs a hand through unkempt hair. It’ll be rude to break a promise, especially one he’s made with Jungkook.

The computer blinks off once all the files are saved onto the drive, and Yoongi ejects the USB where he keeps copies for safe-keeping. His phone vibrates against his thigh as he exits his studio, locking everything behind him.

JK
you fell asleep, didn’t you?

It’s hard to reply and lock up at the same time, but he manages; the text he sends back is a little incoherent, but he knows Jungkook will be able to decode it. The tell-tale click of the lock resounded against the silence of the building, his shadow eating up the empty crevices of the hallway. The early morning always carries a haunting air with it, and it causes Yoongi to walk a little faster towards the elevators. He wishes he’d kept Jungkook around when he offered six hours ago. The boy’s practically his guardian angel, quelling all fears for the supernatural with a simple beaming smile.

JK
ah, this hyung. you should know when to
stop pushing yourself so hard. are you
coming back now, then?

Yoongi smiles down at the way his screen lights up again, then slides his finger upwards to find the flashlight option. The small light from the back of his phone illuminates the path before him, and he imagines Jungkook beside him, making funny shadow puppets on the wall. There’s something endearing about Jungkook in the early hours, and Yoongi finds himself most in love with him then.

He’s always in love with Jungkook, really, but the boy can never tell, even though it’s obvious as day.

JK
mmm should i wait for you? you get
lost easily in the dark. should i come
get you?

The answer Yoongi wanted to give is yes; he wants Jungkook beside him as he treks the short walk to the taxi cars lined up at the curb, to hold his hand in the shadows of the night where no one can see. Jungkook would tease him about it but indulge his need for physical contact. He doesn’t know the reasons why, but he never minds. Maybe that’s another reason why Yoongi loves him so much; Jungkook gives so willingly, never without question.

He’s innocence in the purest form.

(Except he’s not so innocent, Yoongi thinks as he gives the taxi driver the address to their dorm, when he’s so pliant beneath him, whining and begging for everything Yoongi can give. But Yoongi doesn’t mind that, either; he’s putty in Jungkook’s hands, too.)

JK
you’re in the taxi? okay, then. i’ll just
wait up for you.

He tells Jungkook to sleep. The boy hasn’t been getting much of that lately, always too focused on whatever project he’s working on lately. Yoongi supposes he hasn’t been helping much with the problem, either; he comes home late, later than the promised hour. He could stop making promises altogether, but. Saying no to Jungkook is a skill he hasn’t been able to master.

JK
what if you get kidnapped by the taxi
driver? i’ll be the last person you
contacted, and i wouldn’t have any
info to give to the police :(

Yoongi laughs out loud, and the taxi driver glances at him through the rearview mirror. He must seem crazy if not drunk, blond hair a nest on his head, clothes disheveled and a far-off gleam in his eyes. Above them, Seoul’s skyscrapers shielded the sight of a billion stars. He wonders what Jungkook’s doing tonight.

JK
i’m serious >:( i would be really sad
if you were to go missing. who would
buy me food?

The taxi draws near to his neighbourhood, and Yoongi searches his pocket for his wallet. He contemplates paying with his card, too lazy to find exact change, but decides it’ll be a hassle and pulls out a couple bills instead. He’s not too sure how much money he’s holding right now, if it’s a little more than the bill or if it’s a gracious amount. It doesn’t really matter; he already makes more than enough. A couple thousand doesn’t make a difference.

They stop at the curb, the taxi unable to go any further. Yoongi hands over the wad of cash to the driver and mumbles at him to keep the change. There’s a look of surprise on the man’s face, but he doesn’t question it. He simply bows in deep thanks, and Yoongi exits the vehicle, stalks up the sidewalk, and up, up, up the elevator until he’s on his floor.

JK
besides, hyung. i think i love you
a little too much.

The dorm is quiet when he opens it—and dim, too. Jungkook’s not sitting in the living room where Yoongi expects him to be, which more than likely means that the younger has finally retreated to his bedroom, too exhausted to stay up any longer. He’s a little disappointed at that but mostly relieved; at least Jungkook would be getting a little extra sleep tonight.

He sneaks past the kitchen and into the hallway, past Taehyung’s room, then Jimin and Hoseok’s, and Namjoon’s too, until he’s at the end where his bedroom parallels Seokjin’s. The door creaks underneath his weight, the handle sinking a lower than necessary, and Yoongi pads inside to immediately flop onto the bed. His phone is quiet now, the last of Jungkook’s messages blinking warmly up at him. The boy is fast asleep.

Yoongi smiles and turns off the little lamp he forgot to switch off that morning, foregoing his nightly routine; he’s due to wake up in three hours anyway, so he finds little reason to brush his teeth and wash his face. Instead, he picks up his phone and allows his fingers to glide across the surface, letters weaving into words on the screen.

He sets it aside as soon as the clock hits four and welcomes himself into dreams.

Yoongi-hyung
me too, kook-ah. i think hyung loves
you a little too much, too.

Notes:

this was a prompt given by the lovely vivalakoala ♡ all you asked for was a yoonkook confession through text, so i decided to play around with it and let inspiration take me :>

also, this was left ambiguous for a reason! feel free to interpret the story as you'd like
