An Almost-Disaster of a Party

Work Text:

It was the first day of summer break for the students of UA, and Nejire had dragged Tamaki to what was supposedly ‘the biggest party of the year’. This was her reasoning as to why he ‘absolutely had to go’, while making a deal with him that she would never drag him to a party again if he made it through this one without bolting out the door. Anyway, the most probable reason that this party was to be so big was the people count. First years, second years, and third years alike from the hero course to general studies, they all were going to be gathered up in the common spaces of the class 1-A dorms. This was why Tamaki was so scared: nearly all of the students in the school would be crowded up in one place. And Tamaki hated crowds.

There wasn’t much he could do as Nejire dragged his sorry ass through the door to the dorms. It was just as Tamaki had feared: students crowding every space from when they first stepped in the door, and it seemed to be filled all the way to the communal kitchens. Although, it was apparent that Nejire practically lit up the moment she saw all the people, completely oblivious to what was happening to Tamaki.

“Amajiki, c’mon and meet-“ Nejire starts as she had walked over and started talking to Uraraka and Tsuyu, but Tamaki was no where to be seen.

He had not moved two feet from the door when Nejire started walking away from him. Tamaki couldn’t will his feet to move, the crowd in front of him being too wide and full. There was absolutely no way for him to get through and he felt his breathing start to speed up as all the people in the same place at the same time was making him get claustrophobic. His vision blurred and he stumbled onto his knees, gripping at his head and closing his eyes as he tried to calm down his anxieties, to no avail.

It was no less than a minute when Tamaki felt a hand on his shoulder and sense a larger body crouch down in front of him, although it felt like forever. He gasped and immediately opened his eyes in fear of the worst. Although, the fear suddenly melted and he flung himself into the other boy’s strong embrace. It was Mirio. His best, childhood, and only friend he had had for a long time. He sobbed into the male’s broad shoulder and clung to the t-shirt he had on.

“Hey, Tamaki, it’s okay. You don’t have to cry,” Mirio tries for a sheepish laugh that to anyone else would’ve seemed happy, but sounded quite worried to Tamaki. “I ran into Hadou earlier and she told me about how she had lost you in the crowd, and I knew I had to come find ya, buddy. I guess she can’t take a hint,” he tries not to let his teeth grit in a slight bit of anger toward the blue haired girl, but Tamaki could tell he was upset.

“I-I’m fine,” Tamaki murmurs as Mirio began wiping his tears away from his face, making his cheeks light up vibrantly. “Don’t be mad with Hadou... I agreed to go, anyway. I j-just didn’t think, is all. I thought I could do it, but just look at me.”

The blond nodded sadly, not moving his hands from the dark haired boy’s face, even though all of his tears had dried off. This only made Tamaki more flustered, but it was more of a calm type. He wasn’t anxious when his eyes where on Mirio, and his heart soared, instead of his stomach churning. It was true he had had some different outlooks of his best friend, but he realized now he was falling bad. Falling. In love.

Tamaki should have known the moment was too good to last, as Mirio removed his hands from his face. But he did something else that made Tamaki involuntarily gasp. Mirio gently took the anxious boy’s hand in his own and pulled him up to face him. Tamaki stumbled a bit into Mirio’s chest and was a red, hot mess again.

“Hey, how about we go back to our dorms?” Mirio asks with a slight tilt of his head, his gentle, scarred hand coming up to cup Tamaki’s shoulder.

“N-No I can’t! Hadou said if I got through this party, she’d never make me go to another,” Tamaki replies, shaking his head vigorously.

Mirio’s eyebrows furrowed as he gazed at his friend’s nervous state. At least, he seemed to be better off than when he had found him. Moving his hand down to gently clasp Tamaki’s again, he softly yanked his friend in the direction of some, ironically, not crowded couches.

“Well, if you’re forced to stay here, we might as well go sit down, get out of this crowd, huh?” Mirio suggests, giving Tamaki’s hand another light tug.

“Y-Yeah, thank you, Mirio,” Tamaki replies, smiling softly, as he followed to where his friend was pulling him. A light blush was still present on his face as he looked down to their adjoined hands, praying to whatever higher being that he was not sweating as bad as he feared he was.

A few minutes of pushing and apologizing to some of the people they ran into in the crowd, they finally made it. Tamaki practically jumped on the couch with a sigh of relief, Mirio following suit and not letting go of Tamaki’s hand. This caused the dark-haired boy to blush furiously and look down slightly, letting his long bangs cover his face. He rested his head on Mirio’s shoulder, and said boy chuckled softly, letting his own head rest on Tamaki’s.

Just when they had gotten comfortable, Nejire strolled through. She saw them quickly and ran over, bouncing on her toes.

“There you are, Togata, Amajiki! I thought I had lost you forever,” she told the two, smirking almost unnoticeably at the fact that they were all cuddled up together.

“Well you found us....lucky you,” Tamaki murmurs, looking down at the couch, Mirio giving his hand a reassuring squeeze.

“Weeeelllll now that I’ve found you, you have to join this game that Yuuyu and I are starting!” Nejire replies, tugging on Tamaki’s and Mirio’s hands.

“Woah woah, hold on there, Hadou. What kind of game are we talking about?” Mirio asks, a slightly nervous smile on his face.

“Hmm, it’s like a mix of spin the bottle and seven minutes and heaven, so come on!” She says, struggling to lift the two males off of the couch.

“We’re coming, we’re coming. Calm down, Hadou,” Tamaki sighs and Mirio and him got up off the couch to follow Nejire.

It was true that the two were nervous, but they wouldn’t
have to do anything they didn’t want to with whoever they were paired up with. They watched as Nejire pushed through the crowds to create a path for them, Tamaki basically staying glued to Mirio’s side and gripping his hand tightly the whole time.

“Hey Yuuyu!” Nejire finally called out to the pink-haired girl once they reached a clearing with just a few people in a circle on the ground.

“Ah, Nejire, Amajiki, Togata! You guys made it just in time, take a seat!” Yuuyu replies with a smile, grabbing Nejire’s arm and softly yanking her down, eliciting a giggle from said girl.

Mirio and Tamaki sat down as well, the two of them were practically smushed up against one another. Tamaki looked around at the other students in the circle. Some he noticed as his classmates, as well as some first years, like his kōhai, Kirishima, and Midoriya. But mostly, there were so many students he didn’t know in that circle and really hoped he wouldn’t have to be paired up with someone he didn’t know.

“So how does this work?” Mirio eventually spoke up, giving Tamaki’s hand a little reassuring squeeze.

“Alright, so you take the bottle and give it a spin. Whoever it lands on, you have to go in the closet with for 7 minutes. You don’t necessarily have to do anything, but I heard, in a special alone time like this, lots of couples confess to each other! Sound good?” Yuuyu explains.

“I guess so. So who goes first?” Mirio asks once more.

“Hmm... how about Kirishima? We all know you’ve done this before. How about you show your senpais how it’s done?” She asks the red-head, handing the bottle to him.

“Sure thing senpai! Anything for you guys,” Kirishima replies and spun the empty root beer bottle (don’t do alcohol kids) to see it land on Midoriya.

The two went into the closet and after a good 7 minutes, they came out again, only looking slightly different from when they first went in. But it was a noticeable difference that made Tamaki’s stomach churn ever so slightly. With anxiety, with yearning? He wasn’t so sure.

It continued like that quite a few times. Round after round and people would come out of the closet either a bit disheveled or simply with knowing a little more on the person they went in with. Of course, all the faces started to blur together and it didn’t help that Tamaki didn’t know who any of them were. He sat patiently, well as much as he could with the impending doom that he would get picked by someone he didn’t know. Luckily, he hadn’t been chosen yet, and he was starting to have hope.

Next up, Nejire spun the bottle. Of course, it just had to land on Yuuyu, her biggest crush and bestest friend—sans the big three—of all time. She giggled nervously and a slightly pink tint covered her face as she and Yuuyu got up and headed toward the closet, a small smirk on the latter girl’s face.

“I’m so happy it was you,” Nejire admits with another giggle.

“Same here,” Yuuyu says and elbows the other girl softly as they go inside the small space.

When they come out, their faces are both bright red and there’s a huge smile on Yuuyu’s face. For once in her life, Nejire looks shy and is hiding behind Yuuyu.

“So.... I’m guessing you guys are together now, huh?” Mirio asks the two with a bright smile and eyebrow raise as the two sit down.

“Yep! You know it,” Yuuyu replies with a giggle and Nejire nods. “Hmm... let’s see. Who should be next? Oh I know! Amajiki, you spin the bottle!”

“M-Me..?! Why me...?” Tamaki asks anxiously, sweat dropping from his forehead.

“Oh c’mon, you know you want to!” Nejire pipes up, gaining her confidence back and wiggling her eyebrows at Tamaki and gesturing toward him and Mirio.

“F-Fine... if it’ll get you to stop teasing me,” Tamaki says, a blush coating his face as he shakily reaches for the bottle.

He gives it a good spin and nervously shakes, awaiting the bottle’s choice of who he’ll go in with. Luckily or maybe not, he was paired with his one and only best friend. His crush. As he looked down to see where the bottle was pointed, he saw where it was showing it’s cap-less mouth. Mirio.

“I guess you got lucky, yeah Tamaki?” Mirio says, a smile in his voice, but also something else that the dark haired boy simply could not put his finger on.

“Y-Yeah... I really did,” Tamaki replies breathlessly, a pink hue written all over his cheeks.

Mirio pulls Tamaki up to his feet and they head over to the closet. The door is locked behind them and the timer is started. They’re left alone in the darkness and Tamaki is feeling around, trying to find Mirio again.

“M-Mirio...? Where are you?” Tamaki nervously asks, scrambling around in the pitch-black closet.

“I’m here Tamaki, I’m right here,” Mirio replies, scooting closer in the small space and gently holding onto the dark-haired boy’s hands. Tamaki could feel the blond’s breath fanning his face.

Tamaki blushes but smiles softly and wraps trembling arms around Mirio’s muscular frame.

“I’m so glad you’re here... I don’t know what I would have done if I got paired with anyone else,” Tamaki murmurs, muffling his voice by burying his face in Mirio’s shoulder.

“I’m sure you would have done just fine! You are Suneater after all! The best hero I know,” Mirio replies confidently, a slight blush on his face but it’s unnoticeable in the darkness of the closet. “Hey Tamaki...? Can I ask you something?”

“Hmmm,” Tamaki hums, trying to ignore the previous compliments that are making his heart flutter and his face heat up. “W-What is it...?”

“Well... I just thought, since we were alone and all, and even if I’ve never said it before, I really l-like you a lot. I was just wondering if maybe... I could k-kiss you...?” Mirio whispers softly, his face turning an even brighter hue.

“W-What..? You can’t be serious right...? Someone as amazing as you.. wants to k-kiss someone as dull as me...? You’re lying right...?”
Tamaki froze slightly, but soon started trembling again, tears starting to cloud his vision. “It’s n-not that I don’t want to- I j-just- I j-just..-“

But before he could finish his thought, Mirio leaned down and gently connected his soft lips to Tamaki’s slightly chapped ones. This felt like it sent a bolt of lightning up Tamaki’s spine. His eyes bugged out like saucers and a sharp intake of breath left his lips. Eventually, after the initial shock, he kissed back feverishly, softly wrapping his arms around Mirio’s neck, as said boy did the same around Tamaki’s waist.

They only pulled away when they needed to catch a breath of air. The two stayed with their foreheads pressed together, panting to make up for the loss of oxygen for a good minute. Then, Mirio smiled and softly kissed Tamaki’s bright red cheek. Tamaki chuckled softly and gazed into Mirio’s eyes, the whole situation just sucked the anxiety out of him, it seemed.

“I l-love you Tamaki. Would you do me the honor of being more than just best friends? Boyfriends, if you will...?” Mirio asks tentatively.

“What kind of question is that, you goof? Of course I will,” Tamaki smiles and blushes more, lightly pecking Mirio’s nose with a kiss.

Just then, they heard the lock clicking and the door to the closet swung open. Tamaki, still red in the face, helped and hid behind Mirio. They were both blushing and Mirio nervously waved to the crowd of people outside the door with a sheepish chuckle.

“Oh uh, hey guys! Um, how much did you hear?” He asks sheepishly.

“Oh, we heard enough all right!” Yuuyu exclaims and she, along with Nejire, gives them a teasing smirk.

“So you two are a couple now right?” Nejire asks curiously.

“Yeah, yeah, Hadou-San, but this isn’t the time!” Mirio replies, his bright smile waning just a bit.

“May I go home now, Hadou...?” Tamaki asks shyly, still hiding behind Mirio.

“Alright, alright! I guess you can, go on then!” Nejire replies and Mirio and Tamaki gratefully take their leave out of the party. “Yuuyu, our mission is complete!” The two girls giggle and return to the circle to continue the game.
