Work Text:
The night is silent.
Moonlight spills through their open window, illuminating her girlfriend’s cheekbones and adding a silver glow to the brown curls spread out on the pillow.
Reina doesn’t move, unwilling to disturb the silent peace that fills their shared room. All she does is focus on the serene scene before her, aware that it won't last forever. She soaks in the silence and the peace, and wishes that this ephemeral moment in time could stretch on for as long as she wills it to.
It’s so rare that they ever have a moment of silence like this. She knows that their days are filled with the sounds of the band and their own personal instruments. Kumiko is the steady, low notes of the euphonium. Reina herself is the triumphant trumpet. Together, the two of them form the melodies of a thousand splendid songs, breathing life into their instruments and becoming part of one moving piece.
Reina really likes band. She loves the swell of music and the crescendos of melodies. But silence, that can be good too.
She reaches out and wraps her fingers in Kumiko’s curls. The silence is odd, but not unwelcome. Their lives can't be a cacophony of sound all the time.
“You’re thinking too loud,” Kumiko mumbles.
Reina smiles. “I didn’t mean to wake you,” she murmurs.
“You didn’t,” Kumiko replies, finally opening her eyes. Pools of amber, Reina thinks, deep enough to drown enough. She feels like a bug suspended in the beauty of her girlfriend’s eyes. “It was so silent.”
“It’s usually not this silent,” Reina whispers. “Doesn’t it feel...nice?”
“You, fond of the silence?” Kumiko smiles. “What’s up?”
Reina leans over and presses a light kiss to Kumiko’s lips. “Just feeling grateful. Maybe a bit nostalgic.”
“Then we will enjoy the silence while it lasts,” Kumiko replies. She wraps her arms around Reina. “Just lie here with me?”
“Always.”
They just lie there, limbs tangled up with each other. Reina gazes at the ceiling and counts Kumiko’s quiet breaths, waiting until they get even and slow, signaling that she’s asleep once more.
“I think I want to marry you,” Reina whispers to the silent room.
The silence is her only answer. Reina lies in the silence, her arms wrapped up in Kumiko, and waits for a response. Her eyes grow heavy, and she slowly closes them. The darkness behind her eyelids stretches on forever, pulling her back into her peaceful slumber.
The silence stretches on as the two women sleep in peace and comfort.
