Work Text:
“Where are you going? It’s dangerous out there!” Hoseok demanded as he shot up from the old torn green couch that audibly creaked from the force.
Yoongi cringed.
That was the same couch has occupied their shared apartment every since the two moved in together. Yoongi wanted to desperately throw it out and get a newer, more comfortable couch but Hoseok claimed this one held too many good memories. Yoongi, on the other hand, believed the green didn’t compliment the rest of their apartment and was something you see in your grandma’s house from the sixties.
“I need to step out Hoseok. Don’t wait up.” Yoongi gathered his jacket by the door and stuffed his feet into his half untied sneakers from when he got home earlier that day.
“You- you always do this! Anytime we raise our voices to one another you always run to your studio and hide out there until I send Namjoon to drag you out!” At this point Yoongi could tell Hoseok was about to break down, already hearing the sniffling as he faced the door.
This has been the spark of their fights recently.
Communication.
Or lack thereof.
“It’s not you Hoseok, it’s me.” Yoongi bit his bottom lip in order to stop his own tears. He wanted nothing more than to turn back and gather Hoseok in his arms and apologize for always messing up. To apologize for being scared. To apologize for being the cause of Hoseok’s tears. Yoongi couldn’t help but squeeze his eyes shut when Hoseok scoffed.
“Wow, that’s low. Even for you.” Hoseok deadpanned with a watery laugh towards the end. Yoongi had to escape before his facade broke. The feeling of anger, sadness, and tension made the air barely breathable.
“I’ll see you later, Seok.” Yoongi grabbed the door handle but froze when a much smaller, sadder, unexpected voice quickly cut through his one-way thoughts.
“You’re not breaking up with me, are you? Just please don’t leave…’’ Yoongi sighed and hung his head.
'Assure him you, idiot. He at least deserves that much. You know he’s the best thing to ever happen to you, and if you let him get away you’ll be the biggest idiot on the planet.' Yoongi’s thoughts taunted him.
“Look, I’ll be back. I swear.” Yoongi mumbled hoping it was loud enough for Hoseok to hear and took the beat of silence to slip out the door. He doesn’t think he could stand to hear any more of Hoseok's sniffling or responses without hating himself more. Yoongi wrapped his arms tighter around his torso, trying to keep in as much warmth as possible. The weather within Seoul was exceptionally cold tonight.
Ironic.
He could feel his phone vibrate from the back pocket of his black wash jeans. Half of him wanted to believe it was Hoseok asking him to come back to the apartment to talk things out, but the more logical half knew he didn’t deserve to be treated so sweetly. Once he realized the vibrations were constant and were getting harder to ignore, he decided to pick up. He sighed when he realized that Namjoon sent him a long thread of angry messages;
namjoon:
Hoseok just called me sobbing. What did you do?
This isn’t up for debate. You two have been fighting more this month than you two have ever fought in your life.
Answer me. I love you both, but I’m so tired of being the referee in your relationship.
Grow a pair and answer me or fix your mistakes yourself.
Yoongi knows he deserves the anger, but hearing Hoseok was sobbing because of his actions broke the mask he has worn since the walk over to the local radio station where his music studio was located. Yoongi couldn’t control the long stream of tears that slid down his red chilly cheeks. The tears only made him colder. He hastily wiped his face with the back of his arm, burying the wet tears into the cotton of his oversized sweater. He continued to walk around town, stuffing his hands into his pockets and propping his hood to not only hide his puffy flushed face but also to disappear for as long as possible.
After Yoongi made several laps around the park’s rippling pond, he saw on the tall chipping clock tower that was nearing three in the morning, Yoongi finally decided it was time to go home. Yoongi quietly unlocked the front door of the apartment with his teeth chattering, hands numb, and shivers running through his body. Taking a deep breath he walked slowly towards the living room, but he wasn’t expecting what he saw.
Hoseok was curled into a tight ball on their couch with a blanket barely covering him. Yoongi could tell Hoseok had cried, having the same tear tracks as himself. He couldn’t help but feel his heart constrict.
“Oh Seok…” Yoongi moved to fix the blanket and pull it up towards Hoseok’s shoulders. Yoongi stepped back and decided to sit on the table in front of him.
“I know I mess up a lot, but you’ve been my rock through all of this,” Yoongi whispered while lightly tracing down Hoseok’s soft cheek.
“You keep me motivated whenever I’m working late hours at the radio station, and I know you’re always here for me.” Yoongi paused and pulled his hand back from Hoseok’s face.
“I know I don’t deserve you. I pretend a lot of shit doesn’t get to me, and I know you hate that. I’m sorry for today and for everything.” Yoongi resumed tracing lightly over Hoseok’s face but moving towards the dried tears resting on the bottom of his cheeks.
“Things aren’t easy for you either. Getting your degree in dance at the one of the most prestigious academy’s in Seoul has been your dream, and you’re living it. I’m always so proud of you, but you’re always too hard on yourself.” Yoongi moved his hand to run his fingers through Hoseok's fading chestnut hair.
“I love you, Hoseok. Always have, always will.” Yoongi sighed, but his movements froze when he caught Hoseok’s eyes staring up at this own.
“You came back…” Hoseok groggily whispered.
“I promised didn’t I?” Yoongi half smiled down at the younger. Hoseok gave an effort to return a similar small smile. This was progress.
“We can talk tomorrow, yeah? Just lay with me please.” Hoseok whispered, scared to break the moment they were sharing. Yoongi quickly complied and buried under the blanket close to Hoseok.
“Oh, and Yoongi,” Yoongi hummed in acknowledgment, “I love you too.”
Maybe the old fashioned springy green couch wasn’t as bad as Yoongi initially believed. In a metaphorical way, it resembled the couple. Two worn down and tired people, but in the end, they have each other to support one another while good memories were destined to follow.
