Already Time

Work Text:

“I am not worthy for you to love me,” I whispered between sobs, holding his hand tight against my chest and trying to hide my face on the pillow below.

“You are,” he replied as he kissed me all over, his soft lips making me tremble with each caress, with each breath against my skin. “You are far more worthy of anything than anyone and you glow brighter than any star in the universe – you are the most wonderful creature I have ever come across, even after all my years of living, and I’m lucky to have even met you.” His free hand drew figures along my body and he was as gentle as a feather as he created sparks within me, my heart crying out to be united with him for as long as it buzzed with life.

Bringing his hand to my own lips and barely kissing it, I looked up at him, his crimson hair covering red eyes that glowed with an intensity I had never witnessed before. A smile pushed its way through his hardened expression, effectively making me shed some more tears as I knew it would be the last time I’d be in its presence. God, he was so beautiful, and I knew that even my memories wouldn’t make him justice. I wouldn’t be the one to keep him back from his responsibilities though, even if it pained me; he had already been called back. “It’s already late,” I added with a broken voice yet determined to stop his own hidden sorrow.

In the darkness of the room I felt his breath stop for a second as he looked to the side and at the small clock on my bedside table. I saw the smile fade away from his face and his hand slowly slipped away from mine and he sat up, the absence of his heat leaving me feeling empty. I followed his moves and scanned his face as he turned back to me, scarred eyes looking at something far beyond my eyes. It was a gift, he said, to be able to look into someone’s soul so easily.

“It’s not like you to suddenly get broody,” I remarked as I watched his face go through several stages of anger before settling on a constant sadness that was pretty contagious. It was hard, knowing that this was necessary. “This won’t be the last time we see each other, right?” His eyes never left mine and a small glimmer of hope lingered in my thoughts but I knew better than to believe it. All the softness from earlier had vanished and mashed with the dull ache of goodbyes, and all I could do was hold on to it with all my strength, if not my life.

He said nothing as he leaned forward and placed his lips right above my ear, his voice sending shivers down my spine as he spoke with sweetness. “You know how to call me back whenever you need it, my queen.”

And I blinked to let out a satisfied sigh, and he was gone after that.

Silence was the only thing he left behind, and I replayed the last words he said to me several times as I cried out for him, disheartened at the prospect of the love of my life being something so far from my own comprehension it was almost impossible to believe he’d come back to comfort me once more.

Eijirou, I spoke to myself as I hazily remembered, your name is Eijirou.

I knew it wouldn’t be long until I found myself calling for him.
