Under a Shade of Blue

Summary:

Seokjin is an art student in his final year of university.

All his life he's been able to see people's auras, everyone around him is framed by colored halos, and yet he's never seen anything quite like Namjoon's.

His aura swallows its surroundings whole, leaving Seokjin to see nothing but blue whenever the musician is in his line of vision.

A shade of blue Seokjin spends his days trying to recreate on paper.

Notes:

In this story, Seokjin has synesthesia. It's a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sense triggers an automatic and involuntary experience in another sense.

It is NOT a mental disorder, simply a difference in perceptual experience. It is believed that about 4% of the population has some form of synesthesia.

Now, there are about as many forms of synesthesia as one can think of but here are just the ones Seokjin will be having in this story:

— Aura synesthesia: seeing colored halos around people.

—Auditory-olfactory synesthesia: when certain sounds have smells.

— Lexical-gustatory synesthesia: when certain words have tastes.

— Gustatory-auditory synesthesia: when certain foods have sounds.

— Auditory-tactile synesthesia: when music feels like touch.

— Orgasm synesthesia: when you see colors when you orgasm.

⚠️Some of the aspects of synesthesia have been enhanced and over-exaggerated for the sake of the story⚠️

Chapter 1: Drowning in Blue

Chapter Text

I admired him as he slept.

A pencil in hand tracing the lines that sharpened at his jaw, curved at his waist, and thickened at his thighs to shape the naked body that lay in my bed.

Drawing him was serene, the purr of the graphite scratching the paper relaxing to the ear. My fingers danced gracefully to the familiar rhythm of his figure, tripping only on the same refrain they always do: the blue of his aura.

No acrylic, no watercolor, no oil, no pencil, no brush could ever recreate his blue. No blue on the chromatic spectrum could ever come close to his blue.

The same blue that blinded me the first time we met.

It was a dense ink pouring out from all around him, gradually submerging all the students strolling past him, all the trees growing beside him, all the buildings standing near him. I had never seen anything like it, and I couldn’t see anything past it.

“Are you alright?”

The smell of burning white oak wood hit my nose.

I hadn’t realized he had walked up to me. I hadn’t registered I had stopped dead in my tracks. I hadn’t noticed I must have been blatantly staring at him either.

Up close I could see he was only slightly taller than me. His strong body painted mocha, his sharp eyes dipped in brown, his luscious lips tinted pink… He was beautiful and it made my hands clammy, his aura only expanding.

Yet, it wasn’t suffocating. His blue was slow and tranquil, calming me down. His blue was loyal and truthful, giving me faith. His blue was healthy and healing, cleansing my soul.

His presence made me nervous, but his aura gave me peace.

“Um, yeah,” I finally chose to answer, “sorry if I was staring. I just um- can’t really see… very well right now…”

“Oh, forgot your glasses?” he asked.

It was his voice. His voice smelt like burning white oak wood: dark and heavy, with a dash of smoky sweet vanilla.

“Um, yeah,” I tittered, “something like that…”

“Don’t worry. It happens to me all the time too. Would you like me to walk you to your class?”

Class. Right. That’s where I was supposed to be going.

“Oh, no! It’s ok!” I frantically shook my hands. “I don’t wanna be a bother.”

“It’s no bother at all. I have a free period now anyway. Besides,” he inched closer to me, “I would like to get to know you better.”

The scent brought me back memories of a warm and toasty home, sheltering me from the cold winter wind. It was comforting. I closed my eyes and inhaled its aroma deeply.

“Ok,” I smiled shyly, “I’d like that.”

He stepped to my side, giving me back sight of what was in front of me. We walked while engaging in pleasant small talk, his aura diminishing to a simple blue halo outlining his silhouette as I grew more at ease around him.

“This is me,” I told him when we got to the door, “thank you for walking me ‘till here.”

“It was nothing. May I know the name of whom I had the pleasure of accompanying?”

“It’s Seokjin.” I blushed. “Yours?”

“Namjoon,” he said.

And I tasted marshmallows.
