The camera shutter clicked. Surprised at the sound, Shimazaki turned sharply as Teru took the polaroid picture from the camera, shaking it in the air to hasten the drying process. “What are you doing?” He asked, though he already knew.
Teru shrugged, blowing on the picture. “Capturing the moment.” He held a hand over the picture, squinting in the bright glare of the midday sun. It was the end of summer, and the heat was sweltering. He hummed in satisfaction, then handed it to Shimazaki. Shimazaki snickered as he took the offering.
“You know this is pretty much useless to me,” he said, holding the picture up to his face, feeling along the sides.
“I still want you to have it,” Teru said. He sat down on the bench next to Shimazaki, leaned forward, fiddled with the settings on the camera.
“I’m not exactly the sentimental type.”
“I’m not either. I just… think it’d help you remember.”
“Remember what?”
Teru shrugged again. “Remember this moment. Today. Me.” He placed the camera roughly into his lap. “It was stupid. It doesn’t matter. Whatever.”
“You’re right. It was stupid.” Shimazaki agreed. He took a sip of his drink. He offered a sip to Teru, who took it. Sweet iced coffee. Teru didn’t think the man and flavor quite fit.
“How do I look?” Shimazaki asked after a long moment.
Teru leaned back, his eyes on the camera in his grasp. He aimed it upwards, towards the sun, and the shutter clicked. After a moment a new picture came out. He put the camera back in his lap, ignoring the photo. “You looked happy, so I wanted to take your picture. Then you looked surprised, and I think that fits you better.”
Shimazaki laughed. “’Surprised’ doesn’t fit me very well.” He lied. But he still tucked the picture into his pocket.
