Step. Step. Step.
Two people walking hand in hand down the street. The couple stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, the girl entranced by some jewelry in a store window.
"You want it?"
The girl nodded.
"Anything for you my darling." The man kissed the brunette's forehead, then led her inside the store.
Young love.
How naive.
Bleh.
Kousuke walked past the jewelry store, making his way up to his office in Hirahara Corp.
He sat down in his chair, looking around the room. Jayce walked into the office, plopping down a stack of papers onto Kousuke's desk.
"You heading home early today?"
"Why would I ever do that?"
"You've got to be kidding. It's February 14th. Valentine's Day. You couldn't have forgotten to get Shin-Ae something."
Kousuke winced at the name.
"Of course, she is my wife after all. Now stop pestering me and get back to work."
Valentine's Day.
The reminder of love. How can anyone truly love someone. Love is a facade that the naive fall for.
Kousuke looked at the small sofa and coffee table in the middle of his office, suddenly remembering the first day Shin-Ae became his assistant.
Silly girl.
Back then she was Miss Yoo. Back then the two of them were just barely friends. Back then neither of them had hurt the other. Back then times were good.
Then we became more than friends after two years. We fell into the trick called love. We got married. I did everything I had to do, though I wasn't good enough. She found perfection in someone else. Nol of all people. If love were real, a person wouldn't be able to find perfection in someone else.
Though, she couldn't leave me. Even if I let her out of a cage, she no longer had the strength to fly away, especially after Hide was born.
Sigh.
The day came to an end, though Kousuke found himself still thinking of Shin-Ae.
"I shouldn't be so cold to her," he whispered to himself.
Instead of walking back to his car, Kousuke found himself in the jewelry shop the young couple walked into earlier that morning.
Kousuke looked at the large collection of necklaces, having his eyes caught on a simple water lily. "Could you wrap this one up, please?"
"Ah, a water lily. They say it's a symbol of all that is true, good and beautiful. It also represents good fortune, peace and enlightenment. For your wife?"
"Yes. She's pretty great."
"Happy Valentine's Day, sir. Oh and here, for your wife."
The store clerk handed Kousuke a single rose. Kousuke stood there momentarily staring at the flower.
He turned around and walked towards the exit, right before leaving saying "Have a nice day."
Kousuke put the rose and necklace in the passenger seat of his car, then began to drive off back to his home. He stopped at a red light.
I want to apologize for how cold I've been to her, she deserves the best and I want to be the one who gives her that.
The light turned green, and Kousuke hit the gas pedal.
Bam.
A truck ran a red light, slamming into Kousuke's car.
