For as long as you can remember, people have told you how great it is to hear your soulmate sing your song. Honestly, you had given up all hope of meeting your soulmate by your first year of high school. It was rare not to meet your soulmate, but that wasn't your issue. In fact, you had already met your soulmate, but at the time you were to young to understand the significance of the suddenly complete song in your head. Years later, you understood what that meant, and things went in a downward spiral from there. You had no clue who your soulmate was, and when your family moved from Australia to Japan when you were 12 you realised you would probably never see them again. The finale straw was when your best friend, who was so similar to you, found her soulmate. You were happy for her, of course, and she remained one of your closest friends, but it wasn't the same when you where separated by so much ocean and you could rarely visit. You felt so alone. Sitting on your bed, around midnight, you could truly appreciate your love-hate relationship with your song.
"You're alone, you're on your own,
So what? Have you gone blind?
Have you forgotten what you have and what is yours?"
The melody and lyrics were beautiful, though sorrowful. Sometimes, it felt like it was mocking you. You wondered if your soulmate was supposed to mock you, for feeling alone for most of your life. Or maybe it was simply telling you to pick yourself up, and live the best you can even though your soulmate was never meant to be in your life.
"Glass half empty, glass half full,
Well either way you won't be going,
Thirsty count your blessings not your flaws"
This part, you knew, was yours. It had belonged to you even before your soulmate had entered your life, although it was undeniably meant for them. You were meant to sing it to them. But you may never get the chance.
"You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound,
There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown,
You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head,
Put all your faults to bed,
You can be king again"
Bokuto always felt rather unfortunate about his soulmate issue. Most people had found their soulmate by now, but even though he had the full song in his head, he still had no idea who they were. It was a rather touchy subject for him. Sitting in the corner of the gym, knees pulled up to his chest, he was in a rather sullen mood. Akaashi approached him, sighing.
"Come on Bokuto, the others have all left already. What's wrong?"
"They brought up soulmates again." He mumbled, drawing further into himself.
"Come on, I'm sure you will meet them eventually. It's your destiny, right?"
"But I already have!" He cried out. "Even if I meet them now, how will I know its them? Besides," he said, turning his head away from Akaashi, "They probably heard my stupid singing and decided they wanted nothing to do with me." He mumbled, sinking further into the floor.
"Come on Bokuto, it couldn't be that bad. You can sing it to me, if that would make you feel better." Bokuto sighed, but started anyway.
"You don't get what all this is about,
You're to wrapped up in your self doubt,
You've got that young blood set it free"
Akaashi did have to admit, the style didn't fit Bokuto at all. His usually confidence, his loud and boisterous voice, his contagious grin. This simple yet sad song didn't quite fit with his attitude, nor his singing voice. And yet, it had a strange charm to it.
"You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound,
There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown,
You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head,
Put all your faults to bed,
You can be king,
There's method in my madness,
There's no logic in your sadness,
You don't gain a single thing from misery,
Take it from me........."
Bokuto finished, sighing, but couldn't resist the small smile that came to his face. For some reason, the song always had that effect on him.
"Come on, let's go" Akaashi offered him a hand.
"Yeah..."
You sighed, stepping on to the roof for a break. It was the beginning of your last year at high school, and more and more people were finding their soulmates, making you feel more and more left behind. You couldn't resist, as you sat alone on the roof of your school, but to sing the song that had been a constant companion throughout your life.
"You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound,
There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown,
You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head,
Put all your faults to bed,
You can be king,"
Akaashi's eyes widened as he and Bokuto made their way up to the roof for lunch. "Is that...?" He turned to Bokuto, who was frozen in place, yellow eyes unnaturally wide. Then, before he could say anything else, he was racing up the last few stairs and onto the roof, where the gentle melody could be heard from.
"You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound,"
You heard the thudding of footsteps, but before you could react you were being swept off the ground and into the air, and a male voice was joining in for the last chorus. The grey and black hair sparked a memory inside you, and a scene from when you where five flashed into your head.
"Darling, this is Bokuto Koutarou, who's family is here on vacation from Japan. Play nice, ok?" Your mother had said, before leaving your side to join the boys parents. The boy, with his spiky black and grey hair and strange yellow eyes, had captivated your attention immediately. Of course, he returned to Japan, and you never saw him again. Until now.
"There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown,"
You started trembling, wrapping your arms around his neck and burying your face into his hair. He felt you shake, and lowered you down slightly so that he could see your face.
"Hey, hey, hey, what's wrong?" He asked softly, and you buried your face into the side of his neck.
"I'm not alone any more..." And just like that, all the sadness you had felt over the years about your missing soulmate came rushing out, and you wept into his neck. The guy simply pulled you closer, lowering you down to the ground and sitting his chin on your shoulder. You felt him start to cry softly as well, and mutter something about finally finding you. After a few minuets of sobbing together you felt the sadness finally leave you, and a weight that had been following you around ever since you found out you had missed your soulmate finally lifted off your back. And, in its place, a sense of true happiness arrived.
"You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head,"
You giggled softly, realising you were still being clutched in a death grip. The guy released you, grinning sheepishly. "Sorry about that, I got a bit carried away. I was really excited when I heard you singing though, and I couldn't stop myself."
"No, its fine, really. More then fine actually, it was... Amazing." He smiled at that, then looked away nervously. "So, umm... you weren't avoiding me because of my bad singing, were you?" He asked, and you weren't sure whether to laugh or to be offended. You went with the first option.
"Put all your faults to bed,"
"No, silly. I've never heard you sing before. I think I met you when I was really young, when you came to Australia on vacation. I was too young to remember you though, or to realise you were my soulmate. It wasn't until I saw your hair that I remembered I had even met you." You stopped laughing then, and it was your turn to look sheepish. " Actually, I had given up hope of meeting you when my family moved here, because I knew I met you back in Australia. It never occurred to me that you could have been visiting, I always thought that if I was to meet you I would have to move back to Australia, or you would have to move here." He frowned when he realised how you must have felt for all those years, thinking that he lived across the world from you. He had never moved far himself, and figured that you where still in the area. He pulled you into another hug, and even though he was much taller then you it felt so warm and safe, and you would have stayed there forever if you could. Instead, you pulled away and stepped back, then held your hand out to him.
"I'm (F/N) (L/N)," you said, offering him a smile. He grinned back, and shook your hand.
"I'm Bokuto Koutarou. It's a pleasure to meet you, Soulmate."
"You can be king again"
